Wasn't sure where to post this, or even if these types of posts are allowed.
An unofficial Planetside IRC channel has recently been setup.
Server: irc.gamesurge.net
Channel: #Planetside
IRC Link: irc://irc.gamesurge.net/Planetside
Mibbit Link: http://wbe001.mibbit.com/?server=webirc.gamesurge.net:6007&channel=%23planetside&noServerTab=false&autoConnect=true&settings=a36161039325081878395953ba30902c
With beta rolling around soon, I think it would be a great way to bring the community together and talk about all things Planetside! Even PSU-Tigersmith is in here!
Update: We just set up a TwitterBot for our channel in addition to our Youtube/Weather/IMDB/etc bot! If @Planetside2, @MHigby, or @RedditSide tweets, it will be posted by our bot in the channel. Keep up to date with all the latest Planetside 2 News without having to browse the web! Really useful if you use IRC at work.
Thanks and hope to see more of you in the channel soon!
Also, this channel has little to no rules. You can be as crude as you want.
See you there!
NOTE: This channel has a separate purpose from Planetside Universe's IRC Channel. Please support Planetside Universe by also idling in Planetside Universes' IRC!

PSU has its own IRC SERVER!
If you want to keep the community together, make those channels there :P

What other sizable PS communities are there, other than PSU?

The community would be better served by consolidation.
New channels can be made on a whim for specific interests, such as #planetside2ideas for features wish listing and #PSUTR, #PSUNC, #PSU VS for empire issues, and same-server channels for individual clans or intra-empire clan/guild/outfit discussions. Channels are easy as shit to make.
Two competing communities provide no benefit; plus, we have TR, NC, and VS rivalries already, we don't need more.

Reddit, SomethingAwful, 4chan, Fohguild, gamers from other game communities
idk, just naming a few off the top of my head
Also, I don't know if PSU IRC has an anything goes policy. Well, this channel does.

Depends. From what I can tell the PSU IRC follows the same general rules as the forums. That is to say it's pretty relaxed. Not sure why one would need an "anything goes policy" for a channel to talk about Planetside 2. I mean you can swear in the PSU channel if you want. I guess. :)
Also anyone is able to join the PSU one. It's not really exclusive. I think I joined their IRC before I joined PSU.

Pretty much anything goes within reason in #ps-universe.
But it's an open IRC with services, nickserv chanserv etc so folks are also welcome to create channels. Feel free to join and invite others ;)

Guys, we gotta work together here.
There are no divisions. This is one Planetside 2 community.
until beta arrives and I get to steamroll me some TR/VS

The whole point is that it's an independent community, so we don't tarnish PSU's reputation by saying some crazy ass shit.
Nothing wrong with having both channels. We already have 20+ ppl in here actively chatting.

Can I use racial slurs?

Well, if it's a place where racial slurs are tolerated, even used as an example of the "crazy ass shit" you want to be free to get up to, that lets me know that it's a place I never, ever want to be a part of. Thanks for the warning.

Ah right you can't have a quality gaming community without racism I forgot.

not as much racism as it is freedom of expression. a lot of us planetsiders are united states citizens and we like our forums to be public. it is nice to be able to discuss the third reich or birmingham without a moderator chilling effect

 Anyway as I said - the IRC server is open and can have channels moderated by whomever wants to moderate them. ;) Just /join #whatever

This feels less like someone wanting to do something for the community and more like someone who really wants people to join their IRC channel.

Wow.
Lets head on over to this channel so we can talk like ignorant pricks.
Or, let's chill out on a dedicated Planetside IRC server, where the devs hang out and chat with the community and people are decent and civil.
Tough choice.

This is an anything goes IRC. If you drop a racial slur or insane sexual reference, you're not gonna get punished for it.
PSU is more of a "clean" community, and Planetside 2 is going to attract all different kinds of communities. This is an independent channel and pretty much anything goes.
PSU has enough of a monopoly as is. Having other communities is healthy for the game. Some diversity never hurts. Plus, people who don't enjoy PSU have nowhere to go besides PSU Forums and IRC. This is an alternative.
It's not even going to hurt your traffic. PSU has it made. It's the #1 fansite and always will be. You have devs to interact with in both your forums and IRC. I'm not trying to compete, I'm just offering something different.
Sorry if some of you have taken this the wrong way. Not my intentions at all. In fact, I have the "Planetside News" and "Dev Tracker" in our channel topic, with links to Planetside Universe. It's not like I'm trying to hurt you guys. We're all Planetside fans at heart. I'm a fan of this website. Just trying to make something different than what we already have.

Mind blown. Such a scenario would surely cause some kind of implosion. It's unfathomable.

While GameSurge gives you a certain amount of leeway in operating your channel as you see fit, all users connected to their servers are bound by their Acceptable Use Policy (http://gamesurge.net/aup/).
Specifically:
You may not use GameSurge services to send hate speech. Hate speech includes, but is not limited to, speech which demeans groups of people that is meant to insult or inflame.
From my own personal experience, I've seen that the IRCops interpret this to include racial slurs, even those usually not thought to be very offensive.
In short, you cannot create a channel in which anything goes on GameSurge's servers.

They're pretty lenient about what you can say on GameSurge. I've been part of channels that have been pretty ridiculous in the past.
In other news, we just set up a TwitterBot for our channel! If @Planetside2, @MHigby, or @RedditSide tweets, it will be posted by our bot in the channel. Keep up to date with all the latest Planetside 2 News without having to browse the web! Really useful if you use IRC at work.
