Making the assumption that the majority of PlanetSide players are male, what will you play as in PlanetSide 2? There are many reasons why males play female characters in MMOs. Post yours for why you pick male or female.

Females will be the same size, and men are faster than women anyway so that wouldn't even make sense, that last part.

I'm male, so I play a male (in all my computer games that give me freedom of character creation, I make an avatar of my own self). However, I do have 2-3 hot lady friends who can't wait to throw down for Planetside 2, and they'll be playing female avatars.

This game will ROCKKKK

I tend to make my Main character a Male but mix it up with alts, assuming this game has "alts" or just advancing my main more and more with certs.

So yea, main toon = male secondary and on can be either male or female. I don't want to miss out on the dev's work lol. like to see all the character creation choices for both.

Probably whichever is goofier. I remember females in PS1 if you walked forward while strafing (W and D or a) they would walk very awkwardly. Anything that looks goofy like that is always a plus for me!

It depends how goofy the males look tbh. Games tend to make the males look utterly ridiculous and the females somewhat decent.

I often go back to playing a game called Titan Quest, in which the female character works far better than the male, especially with certain equipment. WoW was really bad with this, also. Female night elves, humans, draenei, orcs, tauren and trolls looked far better than their male counterparts.

When someone play games, they aren't staring at the ass they are playing the game. The only guys I know that play female avatars are the ones that are sexually insecured and wish they were women. Not saying your homosexual, I have female friends who play male avatars for kicks, but investing time and many years in one particular game (example planetside) and playing the opposite sex is peculiar, in my opinion. I really wouldn't want someone one in my team that couldn't get his eyes off some digital ass when he is suppose to be supporting my team and staying focus.

On the other hand, many people who play female toons site "not wanting to look at a man's rear end"; as if because they play a male toon it must mean you have to look at his ass. To me that sounds much more insecure than not wanting to play a female toon.

I play a male toon because I am a guy; I just do not get the appeal of playing a female toon. It really is that simple, and I'm quite secure in my masculinity.

In all honesty, I highly doubt either side could be used to determine who is a closet homosexual.

Again, I suspect this is due to a language barrier. I didn't say it'd been mentioned, I asked if it reminded anyone of it.

I'm usually male in game, but I plan on being an Infiltrator/sniper in PS2. And I'm TR. I dislike the TR infiltrator that they showed a few weeks ago, so in hopes that it will make my infiltrator look better, I will try out a female avatar. I'm not 100% though, so depending on how Beta goes, my decision is subject to change.

I'm in it for the aesthetics, since armor and outfits look substantially different on male and female bodies, I take the one that looks coolest.

You still haven't explained why. It's generally regarded that those secure in themselves are more comfortable with showing their sensitivity and any potential feminine side, while those in denial of it try and prove their masculinity at all costs.

Also, i would personally like to think that if one is secure in thier sexuality, they would do whatever they like and not give a shit what other people think :)

I don't like playing female avatars in games where there is any sort of real female playerbase. People tend to assume that you are actually female in those situations, rather than just assuming that everyone is male until they hear otherwise on voice comms. As i am not interested in cybersex, especially with desperate teenage gamers that run around trying to cyber with anything they can... playing a male avatar simply avoids all of that shit.

For some reason there are guys out there that take a female avatar as to mean cybersexually available, and if you don't want to be hit on, then what were you doing not playing a male avatar, regardless of your actual, Real Life sex.

I play both in my 3rd person RPG's because I like eye-candy. Women are sexy (or if you prefer: "I want to be with her,") men are cool (or if you prefer: "I want to be like him.")

The "dat ass" argument isn't really shallow, the reasoning is just silly if you take it too literally. Men roll female toons because, hey, we like looking at beautiful women whether they are animated, CGI, or even real.

Shocking, right?

Since Planetside is a shooter, and let's face it, facial/body customization just simply won't exist, and this iteration most definitely will not have 3rd person, I'll be rolling male toons: it's less jarring for everyone else when I speak through the mic.

In RPGs I tend to take a male first then alternate male/female. On PS2 though I think I'll stick with a male avatar considering it's a FPS.

The "dat ass" argument isn't really shallow, the reasoning is just silly if you take it too literally. Men roll female toons because, hey, we like looking at beautiful women whether they are animated, CGI, or even real.

And you don't think it's at all...I dunno, creepy....to make a character in a video game so you can just oogle them all the time while you're playing?

Yeah, I've never done that either.

Although, I think the part that's creepy is specifically choosing something different about your character just for some kind of weird sexualism. A model gets paid to pose and have posters made, a character is something you make and control. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it just seems kinda distasteful to me.

It becomes a problem when a female player makes a request for female toons that don't look like lingerie models and is subsequently shouted down by the devs who deliberately miss the point (Blizzard, recently). Female toons should not be manufactured to satisfy the male sexual fantasy in MMOs, and women should not have to choose male toons just to be taken seriously. The art team for PS2 is taking the high road for this game, thankfully.

Not creepy at all. I explained that men like looking at women. I like looking at women. I don't find it distasteful at all. It's a concept you'll just have to get used to.

I guess the difference here is I see my toons as characters in a story, while I suspect players that can only play same sex toons very much project themselves into their toon(s.)

I'm not about to have a line-up of males only unless the females are successfully unnattractive... like when a majority of their armors seem designed by a sexually frustrated teenager (I'm looking at you, TERA.)

Or in Planetside's case, I can't see my own toon often anyway.

Honestly the female "toons" feel like a waste of art, resources, time, and effort from the devs atm.

"tasteful" female toons since they all wear armor anyway should just be a unimodel. Take the males model, stick a females head on it.

Its highly retarded to make a whole new model, just so you can place a super bulky chest piece thing on it so it kinda looks like a butch female thing.

I'd much rather they have just scraped females like most war games do and spent that time and effort on entering and exiting animations imo.

I'll probably make a female main character if the voice acting is good enough. I don't identify myself with my character so I might as well mix things up a bit.

I disagree with your opinion that female models are a waste of time for the devs. This game is going to get most of it's income from cosmetic customizations. Being able to choose gender is an important part of making the character you want.

Female

Because im male and like to watch my female character. :p
Thats not a lie but I really think there is an additional reason that is reasonable in PvP.
Females got a thinner build, they are technically seen harder to spot.
With passive camos on the stuff you use or the Infiltrators active camo.

I guess the Hitbox will be the same seize to prevent unbalance but still I think its very good that female polygons are available so that you really get the feeling you are fighting "a mankind" here and not just stupid fictional factions that consist out of men only.

Just comparing the concept art for the female models to the male ones, I'd say that there's very little difference between their builds. If the women are thinner, it's not enough to make a difference.

As far as Planetside 2 goes, there doesn't look to be an advantage of playing one gender over the other, since they're probably the same height and look to be nearly the same proportions. Additionally, since you're locked to a first-person view (unless you're in a vehicle, but most of those obscure your character anyway), you'll never see yourself.

I voted male instead of both, because I'll probably only focus on one character in PS2 for the most part. I had several alts in PS1, and a few of them were female just for variety, but I don't see doing that as much in PS2 due to how certs now work. I may still have an alt or two on other servers and one of them may be a female, but it's not a plan at this point.

I don't really have much of a reason why I play as a male rather than a female other than that I'm a guy and it just seems like the natural default choice. It is amusing the amount of butthurt that happens over peoples characters gender choices. Always amusing to see people who feel the need to justify playing as a female or people who think a guy playing as anything other than a male is wrong.

I agree. Although, I've know some women who played MMOs that specifically chose characters because they're sexy. I mean, no one wants to play a dumpy or plain looking character. There has to be a way to make female models look good without specifically catering to male fantasies.

Honestly the female "toons" feel like a waste of art, resources, time, and effort from the devs atm.

I think this is going a bit too far. There should be SOME difference between male and female characters, because that's realistic. I'm not sure if just cutting all female models out of games as a "waste of time" is more or less insulting to women than making overly sexualized characters. Both would be catering to the male fanbase.

I think unisex models would just be pretty boring.

As for customization they can still sell whatever they want to add to a char.

I wouldn't say that comic is a fitting analogy.

There's a point where you cannot satisfy everyone, no matter what you do. MMO game models are no where near that point and there's a lot of things that can be done about making models that look good (I.E. are realistic and of high quality), but not just be eye candy.

EDIT: I'd like to add that the planetside models look fine to me. I think there's a distinct difference between the genders, but it's not turned into some kind of spank bank material and that's just the way it should be. They'll never eradicate sexualization from video games, humans (not just men) are hardwired to look for it (as a dude, I totally understand), but to exaggerate it like they do sometimes just seems ingenuous.

my logic? i like my media to have a female protagonist. even if i will just be a lowly wee soldier the game is gonna revolve around me, its gonna be starrin me. i will be the centre of the entire game. just as you will all be the centres of your games.

if i'm just one of few women amongst a load of men then fair enough. its a choice and i am very glad it is there.

I will play both. I highly enjoy playing female characters, (despite the fact that I am a male; it just seems oftentimes that female characters have more finesse, and I'm not a "brute force" type of person) but will probably have at least one male character as well. At least in this game people can't make fun of me because they think I'm attracted to my character; this is a first person game, and as such I'll be watching the battlefield and not my avatar.

I hope they don't give females a smaller hitbox or increased speed. Some games have done that.

I abhor any game that gives a gender bonus. People should be able to switch gender of their own accord, without a special incentive that makes all the min/maxers want to play one specifically. I'm pretty sure the devs are smarter than that though :D
