View Full Version : Have PS1 populations increased lately?

I keep thinking about re-subbing for the 4th or 5th time but the populations are always disappointing.

Any chance that all the new PS2 hype has brought a lot of people back into the game?

It might be fun to play PS1 until the PS2 beta starts... maybe.

Unfortunately not.

Depending on what you mean by increased .. empire population can go up to 65-70 but is often lower.

I, too, saw a couple of red alerts this weekend. Also got to the point on Cyssor where NC ad 31 slots open (maybe less, but that's what it was when I noticed). Some of the fights have been pretty epic. The only problem is that there's only enough people for one major battle at a time (two if they are on the same continent) so you can't really choose where you fight. We did have some really nice bridge battles this weekend with multiple tanks, several aircraft and snipers involved.

If you like Amerish, Cyssor and Hossin, you'll have a good time :p

If they would make the fucking 10 year old game free to play like they intend to do with the second one, populations would skyrocket and DEFINITELY bring in more players that have never heard of Planetside.

Common sense being removed, they won't do it until it's too late. If ever.

I suppose with ps2 coming out it might be a good idea to experiment with subscriptions and lower it to $5 a month. I know i could get my outfit to start playing again for that- until PS2 beta.

That's 'cos the last patch (3 years ago was it?) the continental limits were brought down to 120/empire (or thereabout) so there was only 80-90 people playing TR. That's... not acceptable by my standards.

This.

It would give the new people that have never played the game to get a understanding, feel and experience what PS 1 is, as well about. I don't want the new players to base the new game (PS 2) off it cause of the graphics. You got to take consideration that PS 1 came out 10 years ago and that was thing back then! It is more of the game mechanics how it is played and how it should be played. Plus it would hype PS 2 even more. Iam itching to play so bad!!! HELP HELP!!!

Just re-subbed for a month :)

Dust off the old uniforms and get in to give the old addiction a send off!

I agree. 16$ a month for an obsolete game. I just wanted to check it out to get the better understanding of what this game was about. This game should be f2p in the eve of PS2 release but there isn't even a free trial atm, facepalm SOE. A big one.

I really wish this game would go f2p as well, or at least dropped to a drastically reduced cost. I'll still gladly keep paying $15 a month until PS2 comes out, but if they lowered the cost I think it would get more veterans and new players into the game.

To answer the OP's question, I find it depends what time of the day you log into the game. 5pm to 12pm cst seems to be the sweet spot (at least that I've found).

that's about 60 or so per faction, I've seen it a little lower, but mostly this week has been everyone on the same continent. Weekends are a little better, reaching about 250 or so.

Well... pops just went up by one at least. I re subbed in anticipation of having some free time this summer when not interning.

I know it's a ghost town but fuck it, Ascend ain't doin it for me, and beta is taking too long.

It would be great if SoE made Planetside free to play, but all that would accomplish is bringing back all the hackers that compleatly ruin the game for everyone. Then all the new players that arrived wouldnt get a good impression for PS2.

If they make PS free to play, they need to get GMs to watch the game constantly, and this is something that wont happen eaither.

OT: The populations seem higher to me, i havent watched the numbers closely. But i only play one or two nights a week anymore.

I also think they have been lower in the recent weeks because of finals for a lot of people in college. I hoping it'll bounce back up a bit in the next week or so.

They should make it free to play with micro-transactions as well.

No absolutely not, no. Game pop is dwindling hard. Especially after that server move and all the lag issues it has caused and once again no one from SOE seems to care. So a lot of people are just leaving now.

Yep, early morning for me last week. TR had 79% of pop, and that amounted to 20 people.

It improved as the day went on and Europe joined and US woke up.....

That's exactly what PS2 was going to be early last year. DX9+ graphics, F2P based but they about faced and probably rightfully so. Anyway, they were close to releasing that so I am fairly certain most of that code is done. I mentioned it on official forums and RadarX chimed in and said they would let us know if there were any plans along those lines in the future.

Great to hear that it is being considered as I see my self jumping into planetside 1 here and there. That's especially if f2p brings in a larger player base.

It won't. Plans should be made by vets to put together a good send off and request the PS2 devs follow through. Perhaps a free weekend the first weekend before PS2 launch.

I'm surprised that the recent videos by TotalBiscuit haven't at least caused a slight increase in PS1 population?

A 3 day weekend is just starting now in the US and I was thinking why not spend it in the old Auraxis as I'll probably never see it again...

hopped on today for the first time in .. well.. ever lets say, and there was a decent sized fight going on. Really decent in fact. The game is still wonderful in those situations of a real fight.

I find it funny, that nearly 10 years later, the only true Planetside killer is... Planetside 2

that speaks volumes.

There are finals and Diablo 3 to deal with, but D3 will dwindle rapidly and summer helps with lot of college students. So number should rise again. The fights are still great just had a 3way with numbers closer to 60per side.

So I re-subbed (for like the 10th time) and just wanted to report in. Population levels weren't bad at all, big battles going on two different fronts from midnight to ~3am pacific time (as it got later in my night the Aussies and Chinaside folks were logging in greater numbers). Nothing like 2003-2005 but still I had fun.

I was surprised to see that NC had 50% global population throughout the night. That was maybe a first for me.

yeah NC is usually the highest at all times for some reason.

Yeah, I wound up just making a new SONY account, since i couldn't remember my password or secret word from 2003, but there's no way im gonna spend $15 dollars just to nostalgia for a bit and get a faster beta spot.

I'm honestly surprised they didn't make it free to play back in 2007.

Well, i'm back playing again after about 8 years away give or take. Was logged in the whole weekend apart from sleep with a TR character I still have going (seems my original char died with all the server mergers) from when I briefly took another look at the game early last year.

I landed myself pretty quickly as a guest to a couple of outfits so it's been quite a fun weekend.

Did hear about ppl who had litterally bought the game a week ago so I'd not be too down about sub levels. Some folks are VERY interested in PS2 and wanting an early fix.

Is there a free trial for vets or something? I was thinking about resubbing and it let me log in without having to do so, and I started playing again about a week ago.

Anyway, back on VS and I'm having a lot of fun playing pilot and advanced medic. The fights are big enough that someone is always needing to be revived. Also nice to see a LOT of advanced medics now, compared to how it used to be.

If you haven't played in the past year, you probably have 45 free days from the Sony hacking incident.

I resubbed and it has been a ton of fun, seems like there are a lot more players than in recent years and the pop doesn't die at midnight like it did a few years ago. Had a nearly full platoon last night.
