To date, there are 100 MMORPG in production. From what I cna find, only PS and WWIIOL are FPS type games. WWIIOL failed to meet gamers expectations.
Let us assume that PS does basically what it advertises. Okay?
Why do FPS gamers play FPS games? Adreniline rush, of sorts is one. The other is they are FUN. Competing against other live players. Some are just 1-man vs many (DM games) , Others are team based (SOF2, CS, DoD and BF1942 to name a few)
Now, I personally, and my clan [ReTrY] have been playing CS for around 3 years. 3 YEARS. We are not an exception to the rule. Many play such games for long periods of time.
Now, many FPS gamers tend to bounce around games, but still, we stick to FPS style games. PS is not just another FPS. It doesn't end after 30 minutes.. the map doesn't change... instead of stats with a 2 week lifespan, we are talking longevity of the likes the FPS world has not seen.
Some, point out that FPS gamers are notoriously niggerdly with their spending. This, perhaps on the face of it would seem to be the case... but whence has an FPS game been MMO? WWIIOL? Yeah, but that game suffered, and still suffers from sub-par performance.
PS is going to be the "GAME" of 2003. Period. It is going to turn the FPS world upside down. I can see in the next 6 months announcements of "new" MMOFPS games starting in development. 3 years from now, PS will be seen as the EQ of the MMOFPS world.
Why? Quality. With the backing of a major, and lets be honest here, experienced company in the MMO market, PS is going to do what EQ did for the RPG world.
The main reason PS is going to be the death knell for the small server, rotating map game.. money. PS is going to be great game yes, but it is also going to be a cash cow for Sony. And as we all have seen with the MMORPG market, once that door is successfully opened, you will see a flurry of new games trying to capitlize on the new market.
So let us rejoice, for soon the stale world of FPS is goingto be revitalized, and much as CS brought us the "perinnial on-line FPS world" and EQ the MMO, PS shall take us that next step.. and gamming will never be the same.
