View Full Version : Should terrain and trees have a kill count?

Hello everybody!

So I'm sure many PlanetSide veterans recall all the hilarious times when trees or terrain destroyed the vehicle you were piloting or gunning. Trees alone probably had more kills than any single outfit, and the rest of the terrain probably had up to 5% of all total kills (or causes of death) in the game.

Does anyone else think that terrain and different types of permanent objects (trees, base walls, water, etc) should have their own individual kill-count?

There should be detailed environment-kill statistics, like how many of each aircraft has died because of crashing into something and where it happened.

Edit: it just reminded me being killed by slopes when the lightning was still bugged. That bug made me crazy.

YES! They also need to be included in players "Killed by: " statistic, and kill spam.

That's a really great idea. I like when games release statistics about what people have done, particularly asinine statistics. Having access to statistics about environmental deaths would be hilarious.

Also if where/how is released as well it would only add to the "I saw that!" and "I did that too!" experience that is so uniquely Planetside.

I don't think it is something that can easily be done from the technical standpoint.

I think that it would be cool to see statistics about terrain that can help define certain territories as high-risk areas that skilled pilots can test themselves on.

Every bullet is going to be tracked in this game, and each bit of damage as well. When damage occurs without the influence of a bullet, it is credited to the terrain of the area. No need to separate trees from rocks, the environments should speak for themselves.

I want to see the rock say "ding" with a chat bubble and everything.

I think it would be awesome if the DEVs or GMs kept an eye on those statistics, and named certain regions/trees/rocks/slopes that cause a set number of deaths within a given time frame.

Could you imagine having an actual deadman's curve in the game? So named because a tank battle was fought at a bend in the road next to a cliff and several tanks fell off?

Assuming we can drown again like last game, I'm fairly certain the water, trees, and gravity are going to be among the top 15 killers during beta if all things go hilariously right with bugs and glitches.

Walking up to a tree with some diagnostics tool, and seeing that xxx numer of airplanes have died by crashing into it would be awesome.

While I'm all for the statistics for enviromental death, I think taunts and level up beeps are going a bit overboard.

"Oh I am sorry little man, guess you didn't have the wood to face me!"

"Guess you got STUMPED huh soldier boy?"

I think if the tree said "Your best is my worst" I'd be depressed.

On the puns side...

"Your skill leaves something to be desired!"

"Face-plant!"

"Face-palm" (on desert palm trees)

"Incoming PLANT units!"

You can bet your ass that SOE will have this internally - this is part of what beta is for, to collect masses of data on how real (non-dev-with-insider-info) people play the game and to use that to ensure that no vehicle/gun has any unintended advantage against any other.

Any stat that doesn't provide a gameplay advantage to someone by knowing it, should be published imo. (Which I guess means NO to 'world' gun vs gun stats, but personal ones, yeah).

You know, as a side joke in some of your comics you could have trees that aren't really relevant to the comic that have a number listed on them...

Okay, now I want killer rabbits. I'd love to see an enemy force driving through a cannon, a shout of 'RELEASE THE BUNNIES!', and the outline of a cute bunny spamming chat with it's kills. :P

This kind of a statistic would be an awesome thing to go back to when one is bored. And even though the physics are better this time 'round, the fact that any crashes that did happen, happen realistically makes it even more epic.

Arbor Day Planetside 2 event: Devs spawn trees everywhere and they call out taunts when players die near them. The taunts become more vicious if the tree is actually responsible for the death. At the end of the event, we get the statistics of how many players died to trees, as well as other objects people aren't supposed to get killed by.

Make the trees declare they are the 4th faction, come to take Auraxis from the humans. :D

I don't think it is something that can easily be done from the technical standpoint.

Death concentration by location should be easily doable as well as recording what did the damage.

So, perhaps not individual trees but you could see a large concentration of environment deaths centered on a particular tree.

I remember there was also an epic white rabbit(I mean, the same 'Pooky') in AC2. I thoroughly enjoyed playing AC2 while it lasted :D

(and you guys should play Might and Magic 6-7 sometimes. You can get hit by a tree or boulder. /evil grin )

I don't think it is something that can easily be done from the technical standpoint.

It can be done, but it will add stress to both the server and the database. And it is quite some work.

The big question is: Can they add such a feature now without going over every single tree/bush/stone/whatever again? (to give each object its very own kill count).

Otherwise, just a general kill statistic showing where someone died, and by what. But then trees wont have kill counts, and cant gain BR and Cert points, to buy themself leaf sidegrades.

Environmental deaths should be counted and what class/vehicle. I wouldn't go so far as to say what tree but a grid xyz coordinate system being included and time would be cool because a heat map over time... even over years would be awesome to mine for data and see how many cloakers died in front of consoles, baddie reavers crashing into roads, and maxes dying in water... if water still kills the same.

I'd love to see Ishundar rendered as an impact death point cloud like they did for Just Cause 2. Sure, the trees will complain about imbalance but they're trees, what are they gonna do? Leaf?

One of the Devs, I forget who, already stated in one interview that they've designed a specific portion of the testing area to be an ATV track with lots of jumps. I wonder if we could get them to build a piloting course to race mosquito vs mosquito or mossy vs reaver around...either something with floating rings ala Starfox, or a canyon run. Major bonus points if they make a trench run...

floating rings wouldn´t fit into the game, but a strange formation of canyons with holes in them would do the job for sure!
or if on the city continent with ruined big buildings, the ruins could deliver such a course.
