From what we have seen what will be everyone's favourite class and add a short statement saying why it will be your favourite class. (You can even vote for multiple classes if you want.)

I'll play all classes fairly regularly, to be sure, but my focus will be LA, HA, and Inf.
I've always enjoyed the Inf for recon, stealth base hacks, and picking off lone soldiers. HA is my staple, and I also like being able to handle most situations with a single class. LA wouldn't normally be appealing, but with the jumpjet ability and all the vertical map design -- they're going to a very useful and fun class around many of the structures and bases.

I will most likely focus on either medic or Light Assault.
Medic because i like supporting my teammates which will actually be fun in this game, and Light Assault because it will be awesome to sneak around with a small squad of people to take down a base and be fast.

I do loves me Heavy Infantry
I don't have a favourite class. I'll be mostly probably play a support class as I'll be leading squads. So I'll be in the rear with the gear like a real officer.

Lol edit* I will also be piloting these awesome air vehicles, and I dont know if that is limited to LA.

I'll probably start as an Engineer because I like to be able to function as support and not only assault.
Depends on how the engineer is designed...
I don't really get why every game designer design the engineer as a guy with a wrench tha goes around fixing stuff.
I've served as a combat/recon engineer for over 5 years with 2 rotations down in afghanistan, and I've nerver ever built anything or repaired a tank.
What I have been doing is driving infront of the infantry looking for roadside bombs, supporting infantry in CQB carrying breaching charges, and fighing the enemy. The largest tool I've ever held in the field is my victorinox multitool...

Probably medic mostly. I think resurrecting dead squad members makes a devastating impact against your enemies. I will definitely be dabbling in max roles though when I get a blood lust going

Heavy Assault and Medic. These are the two roles that I played the most during the first Planetside, and I am guessing that while being slightly different from the first, they will still hold the same principles.

I'm all about the air, so when I'm not flying around in my Scythe I'm going to be going Light Assault a lot I think. From what we've seen of the GDC gameplay it looks pretty fun too, jumping onto roofs to gain a better angle and stuff like that.
I also picked engineer as my second just because I always seem to be drawn towards engineering classes in most games, and it sounds like PS2's engi will be right up my alley. I like being supportive, but I hate being a medic. Setting up machine guns and placing heavy explosives sounds a lot more fun to me.
The rest of the classes, in the order I expect I'll be playing them:
Infiltrator - I'm rarely the best cloaker or sniper, but I do find it a lot of fun (cloaking more so than sniping, although sniping was a blast for me in PS1 as an occasional diversion). It sounds to me like cloakers will be even more fun this time around so I suspect I won't be able to stay away from them for long.
MAX - What's not to like? Never been my favorite part of Planetside, but I do have a lot of fond memories of them. I'm hoping that the better engine and broader design concepts of PS2 will allow MAXes to be even more devastating than ever while still staying balanced.
Heavy Assault - I just never was that big a fan of Rexo in PS1. I usually took it for the extra carrying capacity more so than the extra armor. Seems like it will be fun enough in PS2, but it's just not my style. I'll probably fill most of my big gun fantasies with MAXes. Depending on what roles HA fills, I'll still probably use it a bit, just rarely as my first choice when there are other options.
Medic - I always took Adv Medic and would heal and rez people in PS1, but that's mostly because I like being a team player and the medical applicator and cert points didn't really fuck with my other play styles that I preferred. I actually am ok with them putting medic in its own isolated class, but I doubt I will play it much. I'll play it if absolutely needed, but there will always be better more attentive medics than me, so I'm not generally a good choice.
I'm actually kind of hoping that classes like Infiltrator and maybe a couple others get some sort of option to cert into basic healing abilities. Never with the ability to resurrect or use area of effect healing or anything like that, but just so that you can have a little variety to your basic healing needs. As long as it was carefully limited, I don't think it would be that unbalanced or destroy the usefulness of dedicated medics.

I just noticed one thing - all basic class archetypes are aggressive/attacking in their description except engineers and medics which have auxiliary roles. There are no defensive combat archetypes... I understand that all classes will be able to take a number of roles and duties however it would be better that main archetypes are then called light/heavy soldiers or stealth troops not infiltrators. A light heavy assault guarding a base is a misnomer as well infiltrator who is not actually infiltrating but defending his base using his stealth abilities. What is your take on this?
Clueless
2012-04-27, 03:57 PM
Infil - Just because the thought of a chameleon snipers sounds so appealing.
Light Assault - Probably my bread and butter, always been much in favour of light, fast classes versus heavier, slower classes. Jumpjets is a very sweet bonus.
Engineer - Not so much for deployables as support when driving my MBTs and other vehicles. Really going to miss my Thresher upon release, though..
As for the naming conventions.. I don't see an issue. They are going to be shortened anyways, for faster communication: lights, heavies, cloakers, engi, medic, MAXes. Sounds pretty interchangable to me, whether on attack or defense.

ENGINEER: setting up resupply/repair areas hidden by the invisible bubble.. Having vehicals coming in one after another as you and a few others repair them. All while fire fights are happening 30 yards from you hoping the enemy does not catch on your location..
HA: nothing better then being a meat-shield laying down support up in the front lines with you fellow comrades.
MAX: Max rushes. Nuff said.

They are just following ps1 trends aka the same titles.. (HA, CE, MED) defensive combat can fall under any one of these catergories. Engineers had an array of defensive equipment at there disposal. Infiltrators used stealth abilities to get behind the onslaught to get off an os, pinpoint ams's, or knifing snipers from behind. HA, LA and maxes will all be able to switch out equipment. In ps1 the only difference between heavy and medium assult was your speed, damage and what you can carry. Any gear could be switched out between classes.

I'll predict a time split between Inf. and MAX, and certing in the Lightning with the AA gun.
Since I'm a casual player, this way with only 3 specs I can fill a number of roles in-game, from my lone-wolf Inf, AA with the Lightning and AV/AI with the MAX.

I'm hoping that there is a light machine gun type weapon because i love putting down suppressive fire, but then there's times where the enemy don't understand the concept of a big barrage of bullets flying at me, i should stay hidden, instead they decide to run out in the open.
But using LA to get to the 'high ground' will be awesome. I might play as an engineer as well as a defensive role. Infiltrators if i feel like being a ghost :D

Infiltrator or Medic as the need calls. HA whenever I feel like it, tho.
Infil because I absolutely adore placing bright shiny things into people's intestines.
Medic because it's fun to watch a man's consciousness slowly fade away in my arms as I lovingly stare them in the eyes.
HA because some tasks cause a butcher to get a little more dirty than usual.
Medic with a dash of HA.
Always play medic. Like to help people. :)

I saw this and I was like oh sweet, then I realized I basically had highlighted EVERY CLASS.
I limited myself to just 3, MAX/Heavy Assault/Medic the 3 roles I feel I probably played most in the original. I would check engineer as well because I did my fair share of that in the original however it never went past simply repairing things so I just lumped that into checking "medic".

Light Assault and Engineer both have the greatest potential to control the battlefield via logistics, vehicle repair/destruction, territory denial, tank warfare, and troop-movement tactical control (smoke grenades, jetpack positioning, etc.). I prefer tactical and strategic play over brute force-styles.

Definitely Engineer when I'm driving my mag. If I'm on foot and fighting out in the wilderness I'm going HA equipped with pulsar and some type of AV weapon just to pick off enemy vehicles was one of my favorite things to do in PS1. If I'm inside then I'll be using the Lasher with Decimator or some ES AV weapon if it has a powerful dumbfire mode.

Engineer all the way, they are my go to class in FPSs.
Played an "Engineer" almost exclusively in PS1. I like being able to support my outfit more than anything else, sure it's fun to be the one to run in and mop up the enemy but knowing your support is keeping your outfit going is more rewarding to me. Defending is when things get really fun though, covering the roads with AT mines, placing turrets in inconspicuous places, so much fun to be had.
Can't wait to play as an Engineer in PS2.

I was never much for the infiltrator class but I think LA has a lot of versitility so I'll probably start with that. I definitly plan on doing a lot HA and MAX on the side and definitly some engy work. I guess I'll have to wait and see how the cert trees work before I really try to think about what would be my main class because there is so much fun to be had with each one and it's hard to speculate before even really getting in the roles and trying them out. It really seems llike there will be a lot more versitility this time around which sounds great because there is a time and place for every class. I'm really dying to see how the maxes work though.

I'm hoping to have the ability as an Engineer to set up some forward defenses, more than just turrets. I'd love some shields or walls. Maybe some sort of deployable watchtower. Would be cool to fortify a landed Galaxy as a forward base, and give it a real chance of survival once its found, since they can't cloak anymore.

Hey, as long as it's a pretty recent thread still, I say go for it. More like CPR than necromancy ;)
Obviously engineers being the most picked class is relevant to that other thread about all vehicle crews being engineers, but it was said best by CutterJohn in that thread:
If you're in a tank, your class is Tank. Not engineer. Engineer is just a piece of support equipment for your class role as a tank.
I'll probably dabble in engi as a straight up infantry class quite a bit, since I tend to enjoy being an engi in most games I've played, but if I'm in a tank, I'll probably also take engi, as a piece of support equipment.
Of course, despite being a Scythe pilot, I may not take engi that often for piloting. I'll probably take Light Assault more often so that I can more readily switch to ground fighting when needed. Especially if there are repair pads like in PS1, since it is a lot easier and quicker to fly to a repair pad than to drive a tank to a repair station.

Engy out of doors for repping, laying mines, etc.
Medic indoors, hopefully there will be still be a role for the medics supporting a Max front-row at the top of a flight of stairs. Always fun!
Engy when driving a tank/bus for obvious reasons.
LA when flying - as mentioned above, flying to rep stations is easier in a plane.
Depending on steepness/cost of cert requirements, may dabble in Max.
Will probably play everything at some point, who knows, maybe jetpacking will be good for a larf? And HA will be a must to at least get my hands on the new shiny lasher. (Still no screens of that, are there?)

My core role is going to be a MBT driver and being an Eng is the best choice for that.
Can any class pull a MBT, or is it just an Engineer? I'm not sure how that's going to work with classes.
In PS I remember having a lot of fun mining roads and hiding in the bushes to watch the fireworks. It was about the only thing I could do with my dialup connections

I reserve the right to vote later.
I'm torn between the engineer and the light assault, I have a thing for jetpacks and mobility but traditionally end up on the repair and turret side of any FPS, but without more details on weapons, utility items and deployables, nothing is certain yet.
Also, depending on the ease of unlocking stuff on other classes I could be a multi-role player (except sniping, I suck at FPS sniping).
I'm pretty sure I'm mostly gonna be using Inf and switching to LA for the more "in your face" situations.

Ok so if i got this right,
HA gets the personal shield, AV weapons, the oldschool heavy assault weapons (minigun, etc) and special assault (i think)
[overkill much?]
Light assault get jetpacks, C4 and more mobile (carbine) guns.
[feels balanced]
Infiltrators get cloak, hacking, C4/stickybombs? scoped rifles and probably a few fast firing options.
[hopefully allows for multiple engagement types]
Medics get heal grenades, resurrection (timered defib paddles?) , a currently unknown method of health replenishment and unknown guns.
[probably still mid-development]
Engineers get the ACE(mines deployables), repair guns? Plus currently unknown weapons.
[base/spawnpoint babysitter? Gods i hope not, but almost nothing known about these either]
MAX suits get 2 big guns (one per arm) and an ability or 2.
[no solid info yet]
Medics, infiltrators have a place in battle but I really hope that being an engineer will not be relegated to a "stay at home and babysit the base" role.
Because ATM that is a lot of flexible firepower sitting in the HA inventory and little/no information on the support classes.
Assault rifles/SMG seem the standard weapon but I #hope#the non HA classes get some more variety in weapon options.
Nothing but bullets will get old fast (especially as I was a grenade launcher/punisher enthusiast back in PS1).
Here's hoping for some common-pool guns (even if they are ES).

They've shown some punisher concept art(don't remember where), so you'll get your common pool weapons. Also all assault rifles will get the option of having a underslung grenade launcher(and possibly other underslung weapons), each empire will be getting their own shotguns, and there is a ton of things they haven't even announced. I don't think there's anything to worry about in terms of weapons each class has access to.

Yes, you will be able to fix it as an engi, although you may not be able to hotdrop as easily from some aircraft (such as empire specific one man fighters) if you aren't LA. No confirmation either way yet, but in the gameplay footage we have currently seen, the players can take fall damage when bailing out of a Mosquito/Reaver.

Combat Medics get belt and leg pockets IRL, plus a bag for the heavier/larger gear.
Backpacks need removing to get access to equipment so are usually for longer term storage and less essential supplies (food, long distance radio, clothes, ipod).

I wonder if it's viable as a semi-causual gamer to play all the classes. (ie- couple hours a night type thing)
Will you achieve enough certs/unlocks etc... to actually be effective or is it better to just specialize with one, maybe two?

Well you will be able to gain certs offline as well. You will progress slowly if you want to try to invest in each class of course.
My suggestion would be to focus on 2-3 and see how you manage with that. This is one of those "we gotta play it" things, hopefully each class will be able to be played effectively without deep investment.

I don't have a favourite class. I'll be mostly probably play a support class as I'll be leading squads. So I'll be in the rear with the gear like a real officer.
This. Whatever is needed to keep the troops moving.

Yea they should be all effective, i think first though you will want to full upgrade one(if fully upgrading isn't a HUGE investment) so you have a decent gun, with a sight, an attachment an a cert to compliment it, then from there well you can spec so you're a more specialised medic or you can put points into other classes. I dont see the point in running around as every different class when you don't have one at least semi kitted.

Sounds like some serious play style decisions need to be made....

And here I wanted to invest everything into one spec and become a one trick pony.
Nah, I'll keep doing that. I may not be well-rounded, but when a chance rises where I can use my skills, nobody will be able to match me. :D

HA will be my primary class. Its the only one rocking the rexo and your gonna want a class that's gonna be able to take some punishment for base assault/outposts. Besides, idc to be caught out in the open with out a rocket launcher in my hands to deal with vehicles/MAXs.
My secondary class will either be medic or engineer. It will be based off of what the outfit needs.

I successfully brought this thread back from the depths of forgotten threads, its interesting going through the pages and seeing really popular threads basically disappearing and never to be seen again.
