Yeah, Bags I noticed that too. What happened to our beloved real-color minimap

This is the future, we have better technology than just monochrome.. that was all like 1980's...

Also, that sun looks nice.

Holy shit, this is what I'm going to be looking at while playing. It just hadn't hit me the same way with NC and TR view models.

Hopefully they didn't add the color minimap just to remove it again. Maybe it's an optional thing, for them what's prefer it one way or the other. I hope so, color minimap is so much better.

If anything, adding iron sights makes it more realistic and tactical, not more "gamey." How would you aim a weapon without looking down the sights?

The screenshots are looking truly amazing, as usual. Indar's barren desert look is really coming together nicely in the top pic. The light rays coming through the trees are great -- this is going to be like playing Crysis on an MMO scale :D

I look at it this way. If you can, use it to your advantage, fight/attack from an angle while having the sun at your back.

Also, it adds some realism to it. Throw a ball up in the sky/at the sun and try to catch it in it's downfall. It's not that easy.

IMO it's not overdone, it's bright but not too bright. You can see the surroundings, you're not blind.

Depth of field, ugh. What's so great about making everything all blurry?

It's to remove that feeling about terrain, trees, people, vehicles and stuff like that from just appearing and disappearing at the clip plane. Some people like it for immersion, some people hate it for it's obscuring effect on enemy movements. To me, as long as it's a toggle and hasn't that big of an effect eitherway than it's fine.

What's more annoying to me is being able to turn all the visual settings down enough to maximize the clip plane distance. Just about anyone that takes this game seriously will be doing that. First Priority is View Distances, second is refresh rate, third is detail.

Your crazy, the sun completes it. I would rather have a bright sun then no sun. And like Higby has said you can use that to your advantage.

Red Beard

In my opinion, people simply are complaining about the sun being blinding because they can't (or won't?) keep up with technology actually making environments more realistic. Yes it's annoying trying to shoot a guy who's between you and the sun...So flank!

It's brings a whole new dimension of tactics and realism that it just seems to me would be a loss in depth if not implemented...besides; the weather (and night) will add variety to that anyway. Adaptability my friends! :)

I wonder if they will have adjustable autodarkening helmets in the cash shop for these bright and sunny days.

That is a cool idea! Even if they were just regular "sunglasses" if the devs felt that was a more balanced trade-off...No need to alter the game engine! lol

I prefer the sun that they showed in that screen shot, they could have gone for more realistic by using the Battlefield 3 sun but then SOE would be getting sued by everyone for burned retinas, and the sun adds in in more tactical options, like attacking a base at a certain time of day so the sun is behind you, etc etc.

I'm not sure most people understand... It's not Forgelight that just magically makes everything look amazing, a model in forgelight will look the same in a 3d modeller as in the game (minus lighting and whatnot), so the graphics are dependent on the models that the art team makes, not the engine. Now, that's not to say the engine doesnt matter, it does, but it's not as critical as some people make it seem. The engine might have a more efficient rendering algorithm than another, which means that it will be able to render more polygons on the screen without as much frame drop.

I'm sort of confused by the picture. That teal bit is some kind of projection on the back of the gun? But it's on the front of the beamer in the second pic...those aren't the same gun?

If the developers have done this then it could be the sight automatically adjusts itself depending on how far you are aiming to help in long range engagements, but i highly doubt that is the case, it would be pretty cool but people could see that as an aim assist and would probably detract from game play.

Honestly, that first shot with 'depth of field' effect reminds me a lot of Crysis3 and Skyrim on Extreme texture pack.

And the sun will hurt your eyes T-ray lol stop staring. =)

ADS isn't about the bulletdrop, bullet drop is just something that's been included in ADS training.

Now if we were shooting blobs of white phosphorous I would like. Also penis jokes.

But lighting is a huge part of why Forgelight looks so good. The end result depends on both things obviously, but the engine is every bit as important as the models. It's the lighting and shading and post processing where the real magic happens, and the real trick is squeezing all those realistic effects into a render pass that can be done in real time over hundreds of models. Of course you can get a better look in Maya or something using ray tracing for example, but you may be waiting several minutes for just one frame.

The engine looks freaking amazing to be honest.

Yeah I agree that a toggle for depth of field is the best plan. I love the effect and it looks great in screenshots, but during gameplay it's a bit odd.

The main issue is that IRL you can look down the sights of your gun and let your eyes quickly dart from target to target, instantly focusing on any of them. There is no head movement or weapon sight movement.

In a game, conversely, you actually have to move your crosshair towards a target at a different distance in order to acquire it. This takes longer and you may even waste time scanning friendlies while looking for your target enemy, whereas IRL it would take a fraction of the time.

Shouldn't the crosshair disappear when you go into iron sights?

You need to go play a little more BF3 while staring at its sun then. I'd say the difference between these 2 are night and day...but yea.

PS2s sun is a lot more forgiving should you happen to look in its direction.

It does. In the rifle pic, that is the "VS ironsights". We have to remember what kinda tech freaks they are, they dont use normal "line up the bead" technology even in their ironsights.

As for the beamer picture, he isnt in ironsight-mode in that picture.

I know who Vanu is, my point is the crosshair goes into the lower half of the weapon on the first picture while in the second picture you can see the cross hair (on the gun, not center of screen) nicely in between the sights ;)

That might be the case but the cross hair should be in the middle of the sights even with movement it can never go inside the weapon because the sight moves at the same time as the weapon.

Right now in picture 1 it looks as if the crosshair is 5 CM or inch in front of the iron sight.

Maybe it is just me..

It's science fiction... Let's holographic/plasma formed/psy vision ironsight move alongside the lenght of the rifle as you aim it ;)

I personally am in love with the free floating sights because there's no solid ring around it that blocks vision. I didn't really care about it until I noticed it between the RPD and SAW in Cod4. The difference in visibility while looking down the barrels is like day and night respectively so I am really looking forward to this.

As for the minimap colors, I'm betting that's going to be addressed later. The bland coloring really reduces the amount of information it gives to the player thus reducing its usefulness.

Snap out of it.

I wonder if they have tweaked with some of the other guns iron sights. The NC iron sights from GDC were really big and blocky. These VS view models don't seem as obtrusive.

Maybe that's the price NC will have to pay for having the highest damaging weapons. Terrible iron sights :D

I don't hate iron sights, nor do I mind if some noobs try and use them on enemies 20 feet away, just so long as the guns are perfectly capable at shooting someone at medium range without needing them.

I wouldn't mind using these sights to pick off someone at long range at all.

I personally am in love with the free floating sights because there's no solid ring around it that blocks vision.

That's a good point. The idea of iron sights isn't wholly terrible, but I think that often too much focus is given towards trying to make it "authentic" or whatever, while not enough attention is given to making sure it contributes positively to gameplay.
