View Full Version : A month to E3

So its not long to E3, SOE is in attendance, what do we expect?

Do you think we could see beta prior to E3 so they can showcase PS2's truly massive scale in a live world demo at E3?

Mezorin

Ideally Higby and T-Ray come along and show a trailer with some sort of huge bomb dropping announcement (like beta by July or June), along with a fully playable floor demo. Everyone is blown away by this, and PS2 becomes the next hot game this year to watch. EA and Blizzard Activision then go cry in a corner because their respective games (ie more COD and Battlefield expansion packs) look like absolute crap compared to the awesomeness that is Planetside 2.

I think beta might be announced there, or start happening very shortly after.

I wouldn't go for a live world demo, just in case somebody finds a unique way to make their Sunderer fly upside down and backwards, right at the moment that Higby is presenting it with his back to a giant screen :)

i think i figured out the hidden message here. if you take out alot of it and take "be" along with the T from "worth" and the A from "wait" and put them together you get BETA!

You cant trick us!

SOE shows off PS2 to the 3 gaming outlets that show any interest because lets be real for a second, if it doesn't have EA, Activision, or a console then it pretty much gets ignored by many outlets. They impress the viewers with a free flowing battle that may involve a large amount of SOE employees playing, hoping for a couple hundred players this time.

MAX will be featured, perhaps it is controlled a little differently from PS1. Everyone enjoys the mechanics, get some random news outlet asking a stupid question. Worst thing SOE can do is have the same content for E3 and SOE Live so I'd prefer them focusing on something manageable for E3 then perhaps around October they will be able to highlight something that will be released close to launch or tease a feature that will be out after launch

One thing I know for sure, they won't get the press they deserve and that is unfortunate

yea true, i dont think they would want that for a live showing.

but if they have a playable demo, i think they would want a large number of beta testers in there to showcase its scale.

At least we can say we liked it first, before the COD and BF fanboys jump ship and join us.

I seriously have no Idea why people still play COD. I played that game like 2001 and it's the same game just shinier. It still uses the old quake engine for crying out loud!

i dont get the appeal of COD anymore, like COD:mw Was the first tacical shooter i played, i played it for abit and i enjoyed that one i guess. Planetside i think spiled shooters for me and prior to planetside i played the shit out of unreal and Halo PC, just couldn't do it after that.

Anyway, since COD:MW was still okay, i brought MW2, BIG MISTAKE, no server broswer and a clear console port, i pissed that off in about 3 seconds.

i gave them another chance with black ops, but again its nothing special, the same combat and same shit as MW, just alot of the maps were the sizes of postage stamps and were grenade spamming feasts. i called it after that game, its clear activision are just putting out the same crap each year in a dash for cash, with a slightly different title.

They'll slowly draw the curtain open and Higby will be sitting there at a small workstation with an intense spotlight on him. The massive screen above him will depict the official beta email, addressed to every original Planetside player and ready to go. He'll painstakingly move the cursor over to the "Send" button, and as the entire audience gasps, he'll mash down on the left mouse button to thundering applause and the spotlight going dark.

I have a strong feeling that PS2 is going to ruin my life, much like PS1/EQ.

Should i somehow prepare myself for the beta release news so that i might be better able to weather the storm, or just go with it...

My career and relationships are doing fine, just not nearly as exciting as PS2 is for me at the moment ;p

I spose i can always buy a plane ticket to the states and pull a Higby on SOE.

I really think they need to release beta about a week or two before E3 and showcase the game in all its glory. That would make people go OMG!!!.

Yeah, that guy put a lot of time into getting PS1 working with the kinect, and of course admits himself that it's totally not realistic to actually play with.

I think he just had some spare time and a lot of passion for Planetside. He chronicled his efforts in making that thing on the SOE forums. Was pretty interesting keeping up with him.

BorisBlade
2012-05-02, 12:52 AM
Well the current kinect is worse than a wiimote sadly. With only flailing arms and legs and no actual buttons, you cant do jack squat other than jumping or swinging crap. Until you can get some action buttons in there via some wireless controllres in each hand or somethin much higher res to track fingers (which still would be inferior to buttons), then you will never have the kinect be anything better than a crummier wii rip off that only plays lame and gimmicky games.

Having said that, if it were paired with a controller or two, maybe one that straps to the inside of your palm or is like wireless Razor Hydra controllres or somethin to work together with the flailing arms and such, then it could be very cool and used for alot. You could use the controller to move your character around and to do actions with the buttons, but could move things or throw things or otherwise interact witht he world in many ways via the kinect. With the just the kinect alone you cant do squat.

I knew a guy that played CoD, he was a total maniac for it and I have never met a single person since that liked the game. That one guy that did was like he was a on a perpetual caffeine and sugar high. If he twitched anymore than he already was I would have tipped the cops off to a speed addict.

Giving priority access to people at an industry only show would be ineffective. If you are a former PS player? You are taken care of. If you got a PC Gamer? You are taken care of.

We'll begin letting people in (it's not going to happen all at once) when things are ready to go. However our target for that is players, not media and industry employees.

They could easily become THE most anticipated FPS of all time at this years E3

Timing is everything so when and what they release is key to success.

Keys to success E3
show more game play with thousands of players online.

Announce beta & release at E3 for September (lateset) and December 2012 respectively.

Keys to failure E3

show more game play with thousands of players online.
Announce beta & release at E3 for December 2012 and May 2013 respectively.

push a laggy beta in december. everyone will run right back to cod/bf.

May is a good release date but a bad beta will kill the launch. A smooth beta in september followed by an equally smooth release in December 2012 will mean success.

We're the content for their game, they need us to get others interested and we dictate direction. SOE is making a very large effort to do all the things they didn't do in 2003, I love all the community love and appreciate their efforts.

I'm hoping they can pick key people from the community much like League has done and put those who love the game in the spotlight for community events and such. League of Legends is the best business model to follow, both content and community interaction.

I love the way the team has been going about getting involved with the community.

Normally, its indie devs that get involved with their fan base because they *need* them to support their product for it to succeed, wheras bigger/richer companies can sometimes be just seen as unable to listen, care, or do anything except farm their loyal fans for gold.

So big props to SoE and the team for setting about delivering a triple-A product that they clearly care very much about, mixing it up with the fans, soliciting for ideas, showing off sneak previews and maintaining general levels of interaction. Long may it continue!

Raise the bar for (MMO)FPS, and while you're at it, set a new standard for big developers/publishers treating their fans with some respect  (We'll repay you by spending the money because we want to, and shooting you on sight in-game if you're not wearing our colours!).

Actually, this is a really good idea. (At least from my clearly inexperienced/uneducated point of view.) This is pretty much a requirement if they want to have the game available for event participants. I guess could "time" it with having an official "in-house playtest event" at SOE to crowd the servers, but you'd have to consider that most events run through at least a couple of days. So this wouldn't really be viable at all.

So as far as using logic goes, if PS2 is going to be playable at an event(any event really, not just E3) the Beta has to be up and running by that time. Which leads me to believe that it wont be playable at E3. Though I'm sure we'll see some amazing footage, no doubt about that.

Oh shit. That all but confirms beta launch before E3.

It wouldn't really make sense to have it playable at E3 without having decent populations, and there is no way they would launch beta right at the start of E3 and risk some catastrophic unexpected failures post beta launch which could potentially require some quick patching.

Beta launching on the anniversary of the original Planetsides launch is sounding less and less like a pipe dream.

The good news is Stew got this from T-ray just a while ago:

https://twitter.com/#!/PS_TRay/status/197710290983460864

"@xStew360x @Planetside2 will be at e3 fully playable ready to rock"
if the link doesn't work,

Interesting, very interesting I must say.

I'm trying to come up with a alternate route they could go by doing this, but I fail to come up with anything substantial. I mean, it's not like other FPS game's where you have a set map with a set number of people in each team.(e.g regular deathmatch) They couldn't possibly do this in PS2.

Even if they took an area and restrict the players to that very area it wouldn't work very well. Mostly because they can't control when people will stop by to play or leave the booth. If for some reason most of the players leave, there wont by anything left for the rest of the few players to do. Most likely resulting in a steep decline of players and ultimately a total failure of the entire idea. Even if they came up with a solution to this problem, it wouldn't even make sense since there wouldn't be any "true objective" and it would feel very restricted.

While I think it might be possible, I find it somewhat unlikely. Beta has to happen at the same time or sometime before E3.

You weren't going to get that before but this sounds so astounding we may have to work it into the schedule...

:) just use the time allotted for sleep to get this done, i'm sure everyone at SOE will understand the sacrifices to get Higby in some NC cosplay

About the only other way it could work is if it were limited to a closed off portion of a continent, and as many SOE employees as possible were constantly playing the game in that section at all times during E3.

Beta launching prior to E3 is actually the more plausible sounding option, although there are never any guarantees until we hear official word.

Aye, that's definitely plausible but you'd have to take the lenght and duration of the event into account as well. There is no way they can "force" their employees into playing several of hours each day. What they maybe could do is that they schedule 2-3 "play events" during each day of E3. Even then, only some of the people at E3 would get the chance to get to play it.

It's plausible but, IMO, extremely ineffiecient and complicated to pull off in a successfull manner.

We'll see though I guess.

I agree, and it's made even less plausible by this from the beta sticky thread:

TRay replied to one of my tweets in which I said it be cool to play with the E3 attendees. He said its going to happen.

So pretty much confirmed beta before E3.

https://twitter.com/#!/PS_TRay/status/197720130480906242

Unless TRay is fucking with us and only means we can play with E3 attendees if we also are attending, then this is pretty much confirmation.

It makes sense that if its playable, people at the show will get to play it.

That's different from getting an account or even getting into beta, that's just getting a few minutes to experience it first hand to build up some excitement, at which point you have to go and sign up and wait like everyone else.

And it also makes sense that if its playable, and people at the show are playing it - that beta will open when E3 closes.

Myself and a bunch of other PS1 vets are having an E3 LAN party. If we could play in a beta... man, we won't be playing anything else!

Make it happen SOE :D

I remember E3 2001 with the first playable presentation of Planetside... Nostalgy.
I also remember that Planetside at launch had few in common to the presentation after a beta 2 more years of developpment ^_^
Just make sure we won't wait 2 years :)

Sweet announcement, but I don't think it confirms beta in any way. It's possible that they'll just have a few dozen machines for players to use and will be demoing in a single base or confined section of the map, like a canyon. Even with 40 or 50 people in a small area, players will get a good taste of how hectic Planetside battles can be.

I do however think they'll give a rough estimate of the beta timeframe, if not an exact date.

What makes it funnier is the number 12 on the target, which could imply that there are at least 11 other guys sitting there too.

You know what we really need to make sure that the E3 demo is as amazing as possible?

Beta access for the whole of PSU during E3!

That way we can make sure that the population locks are hitting their limits, and PlanetSide 2 looks as epic as it is meant to.

i dont understand ... Is soe are going to do everything for E3 or is SOE is going to try to get us as soon as possible in the beta ive redeem my beta code since early march 2 months ago Hope they try to get most of us into the beta ASAP !

If we have No beta before E3 i will be very disapointed . . .

I've been reading and thinking about it and I agree with the conclusion that we should have beta open before E3, otherwise the demo won't be even nearly as awesome as it should be. This game needs all the attention it can get at E3.

Honestly with it a month away there is no way I can see beta beginning before E3. This means it will be open in the next few weeks.

Also, if they announce Beta before E3, what will they announce AT E3???
They have been putting so much hype around E3 saying to wait and it will be worth it. If they drop the Atomic bomb that is Beta a few weeks before E3 whatever they will have to say at that time will be lost in comparison.

I can't imagine there will be Beta before E3, if they want to wow us at E3 they need something for us to get excited about, something we have either been waiting for or don't know yet.

Maybe they will announce Beta before E3 and the big E3 announcement is...... BFRs???

Yes, some suggested the 19th of May. That would be the 9 years anniversary of Planetside, too; and it would be 2 weeks to test it and get stable results to show at the E3.

Also, if they announce Beta before E3, what will they announce AT E3???

Closed beta pre-E3, open beta after that maybe...
Anyway, I don't care about the 2 weeks. If they'd announce it at E3, I'll be fine as well. I just don't think they're gonna convince the public that Planetside2 is superior to any other shooting game if they just show off a couple of people playing again...
Afterall, they repeatedly stated they cared for as many players as they can get. So, whatever they want to present at E3, it has to be extraordinary.

Interesting to note that May 19th is the 9 year anniversary. I guess that kinda seems reasonable. But I can't imagine closed beta lasting 2 weeks thats kinda silly don't you agree??

Maybe I'll be made to eat my words but I honestly still can't imagine Beta before E3. Just my gut, I think it's pretty radically soon. Not to mention I feel like they wont just say, "beta is open NOW!". I think they would give at least a week or so heads up to when it will begin. Once again I could be wrong but I'll stick by my guess that there is no Beta before E3.
