When Planetside 2 is released I would love to see the option to wright a description of my characters background, or kind of like a story of my character, in my stats and for other players to read, obviously it doesn’t have to be real information, it can be made up so it gives you the option to make your character a background story where he/shes from, what you specialise in and what your character is fighting for etc. I think this would be a cool addition and making it feel like your characters are more involved. Any thoughts?

Sounds like a drain on moderation resources. Let your certifications, specialties and stats tell the story.

Sounds like a MUD...
It's basically just a text field for each character though, so from a resources perspective, no big deal really.

Moderation? In Everquest when you right click inspect a player, you see their gear and a description if they wrote one. This is not a moderation issue, and, MMOFPS is really still in its infancy, that said, I don't see any reason why EQ should have this and Planetside shouldn't. And EQ allows cross-server tells and cross server chat channels; now, being an FPS maybe cross server channels are a waste but not tells. But all of this should be standard for MMOs really, RPG or FPS.

Moderation is needed for player's putting inappropriate content into it. It may not be a moderator going each and every one, but when something inappropriate is placed in that field, someone is going to have to deal with it.
I stand by letting the facts about your character tell the real story.

Yes, in a persistent game this kind of thing would be a fun add to the roleplaying part. Not sure if I'd do this in a game like planetside.
I'd be more likely to know what to type in a fantasy roleplaying game with all its interesting backstory.
Planetside's backstory doesn't really concern me :) in fact this could be due to the fps genre or the futuristic setting, idk.
Expect reading a whole bunch of non-working crap :P

I was under the impression RPers had their own servers just for this reason... so not to see the juvenile, offensive and sometimes even porographic bios most players will write on their toons. And I'm sorry but I don't think you'll get your own RP server. And don't say you're not RPing... if you werent you wouldnt care about writing your own bio.

You're talking about statistical facts, those are different and completely separate. I see no reason to deny people the ability to do a bit of roleplay with their description. Again, not a moderation issue. Everquest and doubtless other games have this. It's not a problem in them. Why is Planetside different? Why is it a problem here when it hasn't been before?
No more should they not have this to prevent whatever you're worried about than should they get rid of text and VOIP chat.

Speaking of EQ, while there is a RP server, the function allowing a character description is allowed to all players on all servers. And people use it.

Let's keep it real, instead of a bio it will have a link to their facebook page.

Trust me... there will be horrifying and disgusting things on those pages about opposite factions, as well as rage and pure hate... nothing about the toons background.
Let's keep it real, instead of a bio it will have a link to their facebook page.
god I swear... if I see one facebook page link I will mercy shot this peron up the arse with a jackhammer and post the screenshot on said facebook page!

I think it should have a link to thier financial info. Bank account numbers, credit card accounts, social security number. Now that would be some useful info for me.

I was just thinking of it as adding more additions that other FPS's dont have and it gives it that mmo feel, you will obviously get a load of ramble off some players bio's, and probly some funny shit too, but i still stand by saying i think it would be cool to have the option to write a bio.

TBH, It could go in for those who want to use it and those who don't need never see it.
It's only a moderation issue if someone reads it, decides its offensive, and flags it up. If nobody reads it, it can offend nobody anyway.
There's really no reason to have a 2 page thread about a text box....

It's an interesting idea, but I personally wouldn't use it.
Since there's so much more customization and specialization in PS2 than there was in Planetside, maybe some form of "character inspection" will be available. In that case, I could see a "bio" field being used by some players.
I tend to agree that it's not worth the moderation resources, though.

From now on, we'll call those things 'purple.'
Also. Let's all get an RP server up so we can type out everything that happens.

I would want this to be visible in game because of the added server load. However, it would be ok if it was on the player's stats page.

Descriptions are a great idea in an MMORPG, not so great in an FPS. We're not here to chill out in the tavern, we're here to kill each other with guns and vehicles after all. Besides, do you REALLY want to read the sort of stuff a typical VS player would write in the description box? Think about it.
The ability to pull up the stats screen and such on another player with a /stats <playername> command might be useful though, and add some sense of persistence and weight to the game, or at very least give you something to do in the respawn screen.
