View Full Version : Cracked Article about leading online squads

just finished writing a cracked article about leading online squads (thus the title) and though it's mostly about the years spent in planetside trying to get people to organize, it pretty much covers any game that uses squads, with hopefully some humor spiked in.
I would love to say it's a must for commanders, but that's a bit self serving. It's just a little funny piece with some sprinkled images on how to command people you have no real power over. Also the biggest obstacle to running a squad.
What could it be?

Was a good read.
I'm really reluctant to lead players online after my experiences. It takes so much effort to control your squad.

I wanted to like it, but didn't. Couldn't finish it, too fragmented, too much corny humor. But it looks like you put some effort into it...so good job on that. BTW..I am always the "Asshole" on the team, and telling my squadmates over comms about the awesome dump I just took is my way of letting them know I love them.

Good read. Love cracked.
My 2cents
I have found though that 'prestige' is a pretty good currency for leaders in online games...Unfortunatly you have to have a dedicated group of close friends who are willing to work to achieve the prestige first. Once you have that though and people are looking to impress you they will pretty much do whatever you say. (This is the easiest way to build decent MMO guilds and its a little harder to do in FPS's but still doable).

I really enjoyed reading this man good job!
Only criticism is it seems to be more about how to be a helpful squad member than how to lead a squad.
Either way it was funny and fun to read so good job!

it's taken from two lager essay pieces in the new primer 2.0 which (http://sents.enjin.com/primer) deal more with strictly planetside and tactics and the like. I'm usually known for much dryer material ( planetside 1 primer 50 pages (http://ps.warriornation.net) ) but it reads like stereo instructions so I'm trying to incorporate some humor into it with light strat. The first half I agree is more 'know how to get xp and have fun doing it' and not explaining exactly how since each game has it's own structure. I didn't want to get too wordy, it's already seeming on the edge of long.
thanks for the likes! can't wait for the game myself.

You win A+
Playing anything is more fun with the more people you have. Except for masturbating which is just awkward the next morning after the jamboree. That mental picture of a jamboree....

Great read, sadly I just came upon this today - deff agree withe the "Don't be a dick" although I believe the chatterbox'es are up there with them.
All I remmber hearing NemesisOrion yelling at us was "Shut up on TS or I will kick you from squad!!" But of course that thread was imminent for just about any incorrect action

It's been nearly 3 months since posting so i figure a quarterly bump is not a terrible thing. Thanks to those who have already seen and commented on it.

As someone with not much past experience leading bigger online squads and as someone who probably has to lead em with PS2 coming up, this thread wasnt much of use sadly.
I was really excited to read it and thinking it'll help me get started, but I'm not totally sure where the actual content was, I guess somewhere flooded between all the humorous remarks (that were way too many to actually be fun anymore).
But there were a handful of good thing for me to read there too :D

well if you were looking for the real Planetside Strategy thingy then here's my 50 page piece on running (some would say ruining) and maintaining squads in the first game (no really,50 pages with 100 images including base diagrams, air formations, tower takedown technique). That SONY herself emailed out in their newsletter to everyone that played the game back in 05 (not that anyone actually read it, lol)

The cracked piece is simply for fun (although I think the teamspeak part should be required reading for my guys) as I already covered the hell out of the serious part.

Sounds like my experience leading pug squads.
My favorite line to use on the dick:
I'm sorry, did the end of my sentence interrupt the beginning of yours?
Glad you bumped it. Very entertaining.

PS2 squad leading is easy right now. Look at map, find out what base is going to be captured next. Instruct your squad to get quads or ESF and zerg as fast as possible towards that base. When the base is captured, rinse & repeat.
It's very effective because everyone now knows that it's the easiest way to get XP and you will experience very little opposition from your squad members.

Good article. I enjoyed it. If you really want it to be seen, you need to spread it elsewhere, as well.
