who to fight for?

hi guys.

loving the pics that are being put up on twitter and all the info on here.

one thing i cant make my mind up on though is who i should fight for. never played ps1 so have no clue on any background of the factions or anything. the NC and VS look cool and im swaying towards the NC due to the little i know of them and the general look of them.

why did you guys make your choices? :)

I'm not really in love with any of the factions themselves, I'm just in love with the Vanguard.

We all initially decided our factions for many different reasons, very few have the exact same reasoning as to why they were called upon by whichever faction.


But at some point down the road you realize that you could never play another faction without feeling like you were betraying your own family.

Why did I make the choice I did to go with VS? Basically first impression gameplay back in beta.

It started off when I jumped onto my brothers beta account when he wasn't looking. I spawned in the basement of a tower and just ran outside not knowing anything. As I exit the doors I see a little man across a bridge and I pull out the first weapon that I could figure out how to get. Out comes a TR repeater and I plink away at the soldier in the distance. After a disappointing 2 magazines I run back inside and log out. Never saw my character but I never wanted to shoot that weapon again.

I try another server and BOOM! suddenly I'm surrounded by noise and I see soldiers in sleek purple armor running by me in tight corridors. I try to follow but I'm slow as hell but I see a nice giant gun where my arm should be so I follow the crowd. Tunnel slopes up and I see bodies of the men who ran passed as someone marked red comes jogging down the tunnel and open fire. I return the favor as a hail of laser fire jets out of my arm. As his body turns into a coffin I just keep walking and shooting in the the open doorway and room. I cut down another 2 invaders before I get taken down myself. As the camera cirlces around my body of who I am. A giant in purple scales with a gun for an arm looks back at me while bullet tracers and laser beams streak across my screen. That moment only lasted 20 seconds or so but in that time I had found my home.

Who knows what might have happened if that first TR try was more action and not the disappointment it was, who knows what would have happened if I had gotten NC first but by luck I had a great experience with the VS and that what I stuck with. For you, I'd recommend giving all of the empires a chance but go with what kind of gameplay/weaponry you like most and then by looks.

P.S. the VS AV weapon was boss

Mad science is the best science and VS have it in ******. I'm also a fan of flexibility and anything with the word "Railgun" in it. So the Magrider was like a dream come true in that it was versatile and had a railgun for a turret. Then there's the Lancer. I love the lancer, it's a weapon when if you lose it's often your own fault for not being a perfect automaton. But that's ok, you'll get better and it will be awesome.

If you enjoy hard to master but really powerful tools, go VS.

I used to play for TR because somehow i just like any faction that says firepower first.!

after a while a few freinds of me went playing ps1 and they joined nc so i joined nc to to form up a clan.

but somehow in just a few weeks i told them i couldnt get the feeling i had with TR so i went back to TR and had a long and fun time on it.

So personally i think i try 3 factions and after a week playing i choose one to stick with it because i dont know if the factions play the same as in ps1.Probably i just play TR again.

NC for the looks I suppose. Each empire has their ups and downs when it comes to ideology. Each empire can be made out to be the hero or the villain. However, in my opinion, NC is the empire that has the looks of the hero. Both TR and VS have looks that fits villains.

Depends on if you have any real-life friends playing the game sometimes.

I was introduced to the original by a friend who started as VS. As the underdogs in the beta at that time my loyalty grew quite strong.

I've tinkered wirh the other empires a lot (and had a fairly extensive stint with TR on Werner Server) but it is VS who I will be joining again first.

Finally it come down to cosmetics and play-style:

1) Who do you like the look of the most?:

TR - traditional, military, new/well kept
NC - experimental, rebel, a bit rough around the egdes but well maintained
VS - fururistic, neutral, laser weapons

2) What play-style do you like?:

TR - rapid fire weapons, low damage per shot
NC - slow firing weapons, high damage per shot
VS - somewhere in between more more versitile (e.g. no bullet drop, armour piercing modes etc..)

Hopefully there is a tutorial which will allow us to spawn any weapon and any vehicle and let us play around with it, then that would help decide who to play as. But i think i will choose TR because they are the only solution to the chaos that is Planetside, and rapid fire sounds like me, i like suppressing enemies, even if they don't understand what being suppressed means they are meant to hide until i stop shooting or they die.

I found myself on TR because I originally joined up with 2 friends. We saw that TR was the only side that would let us all ride in the same MBT together. The rest is history...

Most people will be specializing in something like driving tanks, flying fighters, sniping, close combat, infiltration, etc. Decide what interests you the most and then go with the empire that has your favorite version of that weapon/vehicle.

And of course beta is the perfect time to check out all three!

everything about the TR appealed to me from the colour scheme to the back story and the list of impressive weapons they were totting, I love guns with lots of bullets :)

It was the faction all my friends played on at the time. Since I had no clue about the differences in guns my choice was almost 100% based on friends and the fact that the NC colors had blue.

Choose the faction that is aesthetically most pleasing for you and fits your general playstyle the most.

TR = Volume. Lots of speed, bullets and hardware.
NC = Tuff. High damage and durability but slow less mobile.
VS = Mobile. Possibly the most flexible and mobile faction.

I played NC in the first. none of the other factions appealed to me so never tried them. figure i will give them all a try this time around atleast. I like the visual style of the TR and the flashiness of VS weapons, but honestly who doesn't like to have some real power in their punch? so at the end of the day its go blue or go home. I joined VS cos my friend and brother both randomly joined them and like people before have said, once you join a faction your loyal to them forever (apart from the hoppers;)
Basically tho NC= easy mode
TR= Less Easy
VS= hardest mode

I Chose VS because I thought they looked the coolest and that's good enough for me. Being the only empire to use lasers and hover vehicles really made me feel like I stood out more. I would say the difference between NC and TR is marginal compared to the difference of the VS. I don't mean in playstyle simply in the look and the available weapons.

To me there really is no other reason to make a choice other than what empire is the coolest to you.

The only other reason would be, your friend plays and you join with him/her on his/her empire just to play together.

I think for most players, you start playing and you just know. The reasons may vary, but generally, you just know.

The exception tends to be players who go with x faction because that's what their friends or outfit mates went for, but for the most part, there is something about one side or the other that just speaks to you.

When I got the first game (shortly after launch), I saw the box art with the faux VS MAX and thought it looked weird but interesting. I like sci fi, so I thought it would be fun (and an MMOFPS, awesome). Along those lines, I first made a VS character due to them being the most sci fi empire.

There was never really any going back after that. I tried all of the other empires, but none of them spoke to me like playing as the VS.

I really enjoyed the VS community on Johari at the time as well. Good times.

The head of the division in the clan chose VS, why I'm not sure as he even looks back on it and offers up the fact that 'um, we could try a different color?' But it's too late, he locked that ship on course and we can't seem to stray for more than an alternate character or two.

Also, in any sporting event i watch i route for the underdog (I'm Philly... I'm still hoping there's a Time Machine to go back a week and maybe the Flyers will get it right this time) and the VS just 'seem' like the underdog to me. I'm not saying they are, though populations back in the day could support the argument i suppose.

My only regret is i wish we had played more outside Markov, more of Emerald specifically, there seems to be as much of a community over there as it was for us, i feel we missed out isolating ourselves on one server.

I prefer the TR for a few reasons:
aesthetics
The strong, ordered government, and especially considering that the the other options are a corporate(something run by fear and greed) run rebellion, or a bunch of people who worship a glorified alien i-pod.

That would certainly add an interesting element to gameplay. Might have kidnap a couple VS scientist types and force them to make some NC Blue Magic.

I spawned in the starting area as most do and truth be told my faction to play as was decided by simply closing my eyes and clicking at random! I have yet to regret my choice :)

I'm VS, not born but certainly raised.

Initial choice is down to what you like the look of, who your friends are playing as and what colour you like best.
After this:-
Find a good team/outfit that will turn into combat-buddies and/or family.
Or join the biggest gang you can find and be part of the swarm.
The choice is yours and if all else fails, roll a dice (1,4 NC, 2,5 TR, 3,6 VS).

NC are rednecks (and have big guns) In PS1 they were annoying.
Terran are military (and have fast guns) In PS1 they were overwhelmed.
Vanu are scientists (and have laser guns) In PS1 they were organised.

It doesn't matter. Find some friends, get on vent and listen to your OL. But if you want to meta-game, purple historically had lowest pop in ps1 and therefore the biggest xp buffs for being low pop. No clue how that is being handled in the new iteration of the game, or even if VS will be less popular.

Also at this point, no one really knows if there is going to be something crazy good like the scat max in ps1. If you have no clue, mess around play all three, find some people you like and play together.

Well, for myself, I used to be a vivid Vanu player though TR has always been my second love. Now in PS2 I al going to go all out on TR because the new Vanu looks, while being cool and everything, aren't doing it for me this time.

I think the first reason I went with VS was because of the "empire need" indicator on the selection screen. From there I found that I really just enjoyed it over the other factions and always having the lower pop on emerald just meant that there were that many more to shoot at. I had alts on each faction and my outfit would go TR or NC on the playtest server but it was a rare occasion that I would play anything other than VS. I will be straight up VS again for PS2 but at least give other factions some time durring beta just for shits and giggles.
