You know, I had to do a double take to see the guy that's actually holding that rifle. That camouflage... damn.

Me too. I was wondering why they had the gun on the ground for a photo op. Someone in R&D must be getting pretty giddy about a certain upcoming beta.

The enemy will assume this is a toy, offering the US a vital tactical advantage when surprise third degree burns occur.

The question is, does it work and will I be able to get a hold of one during the zombie apocalypse?

For the purpose it was built for, apparantely is does work. Sadly, the purpose it was built for was "dazzling" the enemy. The “Personal Halting and Stimulation Response” (PHaSER) causes absolutely no damage from what I understand and is only meant to "determine intent". I'll let you guys read the 7 year old article for yourselves.

Ohh is this that microwave gun I heard about, that melts people's skin? IMO weapons like that should be a WAR CRIME

i didn't know about the microwave gun. I thought it was that strange weapon that, when fired, makes you 'believe' you're burning to death, but you're not. I can't remember where i read about THAT crazy thing but i have not heard much of it in recent months. Though, i must confess i do not troll the new weapons forums of Janes, it would take away from my PSUniverse time.

Read Geist's article above. The gun apparently is meant to blind people not burn. so disappointing

Oh, hold on. Let me take 5 seconds to aim at this guy's eyes instead of Center Mass as I've been trained to do with every other weapon through out my entire career.

Dissapointing indeed.

Cutting someone's head off should be a WAR CRIME too. Think Haji listens?

Seriously. Just...

Oh fuck it.. nvm... Go hug a tree. Or a rose bush.

Beheading is a common method of execution around the world. Melting someone's skin would be far more torturous.

Only in Mexico, especially wherever drug gang warfare is concerned.

On topic: aww, all the Vanu fanboys don't get the real-life incarnation of their disco ball shooter.

When your options are putting a bullet in them or giving them burns. The burns is the kinder of the two as they don't make you bleed out.

As it says it's designed to tell if the target is actually a threat which gets shot or just someone who likes rabble rousing.

Burning is, however, more painful.

While being lit on fire in indeed rated an 11 on a pain scale of 10 I'd doubt that this goes anywhere near that. It's probably developed along the same line of thought as the microwave cannon (http://blog.alexanderhiggins.com/2012/03/12/military-unveils-heat-ray-microwave-crowd-control-cannon-94751/). If you're looking for something that causes unneeded suffering I'd steer you more towards our good friend the flamethrower which seems to still be legal (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/munitions/incendiary-legal.htm) in warfare. However, I think the last time I saw recent video of a military training with flamethrowers the military was Chinese.

So no, this is not something you should care overly much about.

US Military doesn't use flamethrowers as anti-personell

If I had that thing I'd pop some popcorn from the safety of my recliner and then fetch it with my grabber.
