Hello all,
Ive been thinking about this for some time. And would like to hear your thoughts and maybe get some clarification from the devs if they have already started doing this.
The new world of Auraxis looks so hand crafter and detailed I would like to see some of the world actually be given names. This would be some good fun and also help out in game with locations etc.
Some funny examples!
Hamma's Hill
Higby's Hole!
Basti's Bush!
The Tree of the Ray!
Morto's mound!
The list is endless!
Haha! Of course to make a name legit you would need to post:
Name
Location
Object/Place
Map Reference
Continent
Server (this could just duplicate on all)
This is just an idea, but its been on my mind for ages. All the bases and towers will have names. But land marks etc wont. Could be some good fun!
Thoughts?

The last sort of mission I want to go on is an insertion/extraction to Higby's Hole.

To be honest no.
Why do you want part of the game to be called after you?
If you want to think about names think about more meaninful tactical names, the equivalent of:
BD, FD, lobby, magic door, rabbit hole.

Boring.
It was a bit of fun, but I keep forgetting most of you hate fun.
And the names above where not serious! Geez.
Open your minds a little.
Ill do some more serious names then!
NC Canyon
TR Town
Fields of Vanu
Forest of the Republic.
Hot drop hole!
Bullet Bridge
This list is also endless.
Some of the names of places in my home town are:
The Witches Cave
The Dippers
Crow Wood
Etc etc!
Edit** Names can be crazy!
Also just to let you guys know doing this could also promote the outfits a little, AT (AzureTwilight) city anyone?
Screw it, im not asking for your permission just feedback. Ill do this alone then :D

In all seriousness though, I like to pretend too but I don't see it happening.

Honestly I think naming parts of the map will most definitely come (by the community rather than the game itself).
I'm not sure if it was in PS1 since I did not play in an outfit nor that regularly.
In Mount&Blade Warband (basically the only game I played on a clan base) we needed such clarification terms in order so quickly coordinate the troops.
I can imagine tactical consultations like "Squad A, move to Harper's Hill from south and wait for further commands!"
Why not?

Yes why not!! I know the devs wont put them in, so lets do it. But I still think naming some stuff after the devs will be fun! As they did make the game..

I think we can do that with Squad leaders issuing waypoints and such, so even though that would be cool, it will probably end up being, "Squad 1, move to grid Bravo Golf 3-9 from the south" or "Squad 1, i put a damn waypoint on your HUD, why arn;t you obeying it? do i need to come there and shoot you?" I wish me and my friends did that, but Battlefield 3 never had grid references :(

With all respect I actually hate this idea.
The names should be consistent with the lore - since the Planetside team have actually put some work into it. I'm not one of these lore nerds - i havent even read the stuff SOE have put out - but it doesnt make sense to put that stuff out without it being relevant to the game. If you design lore into a game - it should tie into the world you are building.
It definitely should not reference the forum community that follow the game. Some of the people mentioned don't really seem to play the game that much anyway.... they mostly talk about the game! This is a game not a panel show popularity contest!
This actually reminds me of the BBC kids show Blue Peter where they'd get the kids to do a competition to name the pets. The worst people in the world to come up with cliched crap names for the pets were the kids, resulting in a 'cat name fixing' scandal by the production team. (here (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-483925/Blue-Peter-says-sorry-cat-fixing-scandal.html) is the link)
I like this idea, but I can imagine that it will, as stated before, be created by the community on each server. Some bases might be defended zealously by a Outfit and be come to be known as 'the home of said Outfit'. Other places might be remembered by epic battles previously fought there, or areas with not-so-forgiving characteristics, like "The Hell Hole" Supermorto pointed out to us. In my view, it adds more character to the game world and brings at least me closer to it.

I don't think this necessarily is a problem in a game like Planetside. Since it is a game which only focuses on PvP - it is we, the players, who are the games main storytellers. Each battle that is fought in the game will have been carried out by us and so, it is we who are writing the history of Auraxis.
Sure, I agree that we should show some respect to the lore that has been written about each faction and the history that has led up to the point where we start in Planetside 2, but I rather see it as a base to build our own lore upon than something that should restrict us.
And we shouldn't have to restrict real people from becoming a part of the game, when they have been so influential in the community. While we in real life see people like Matt Higby as the Creative Director of the game and T-Ray as the Art Director , they become legends while in the game. Matt has a high standing within the NC community and is probably more known as a "High Commander" of their ranks, and T-Ray could be considered more of a "Arch-Preacher of the Vanu and Holder of the Undeniable Truth". Basti, Hamma, PurrfectStorm, Arclegger, Supermorto and many others have gained similar recognition in the community and are people I have no problem with seeing becoming legends of sorts in the game aswell. As I said before, it only adds character to the game, if done so properly of course.
Well, this became a bit lengthy, but I hope my point got across.
Cheers.

Doubt it... I expect great battles to happen all the time quite likely at the same spots. How are we supposed to remember a specific battle?

Outfits will come up with different names for areas that affected them, probably "our base" and "that fucking canyon", but if there's extensive use of local area VOIP and squads/outfits talk to each other as opposed to just within themselves, then sometimes, names will stick.
If this is gonna happen, its gonna happen organically, rather than forcing it.

It need not be so clear cut - us naming it or devs naming it. Given the right tools within the game, areas or features could be named by consensus in the community, moderated and supported by the devs.
e.g. naming by the winner of a fight or to commemorate a particularly long and big battle, or an in-game event ...

You guys are forgetting one thing. The TR used to be the sole occupier of Auraxis, which means the entire thing would be named Terran Republic.
Terran Republic Mountain
Terran Republic Hill
Terran Republic Canyon
Terran Republic Glory Hole
...

I think the main objection is how forced this seems. If something's going to gain a certain name, it should be due to general consensus about what the area is characterised by, rather than people trying to tag their names all over the map.
Informal names could be good though. Something like "Bastard's Peak" for a good hill for snipers would be amusing.
EDIT: Didn't realise I was looking at such an old version of this thread. I agree with Kipper though.

This is an awesome idea!
Obviously it would need names that are serious at least mostly but an awesome idea that adds meaning to fights and helps organize the map!
Think, "The Battle of Bunker Hill" from the american revolution.
Bunker Hill being the name of the location it creates more meat to a fight in terms of story.
I'd love to be able to say, remember when we held off hundreds all day and all night at "Insert name".

Do people still not realize that his names in the OP were jokes and his idea is not to name parts of the map after people???

Sorry if I misinterpreted that. Some people I've know tend to put forward ideas like this 'as a joke' when really they're quite heavily invested in seeing it come to fruition. I shouldn't be casting aspersions on the character of people I've never met though.
Honestly though, naming it after people wouldn't even bother me that much as long as there was a good enough reason for it. For example, I think naming a particular tunnel after the commander who led his platoon through there for a sneak attack which routed an enemy after a week-long battle, would be awesome. That kind of community lore is priceless.

In Rome Total War, when there are huge battles, the game puts a marker with the date of the battle and the winning commander/faction and losing commander/faction.
Is there anything like that that could be done? Perhaps not memorials of individual battles, but if there are locations that are particularly attractive of vicious battle, maybe they could somehow be recognized.
I mean places away from bases, btw, I kinda assume that most battles will actually be door camping defenses.

I'm also sorry to use you as an example, I just felt like a lot of people still didn't understand his idea.
And anyways the way you seem to think it should work, with your example of Bastard's peak is exactly how I would like to see it done.

Terrain earns its name. We can't name areas until they are actually worth naming, that would be rather disingenuous.

You might be wrong there. Wasn't the case in PS1 either. Most battles were open field and the best ones were on bridges :D

I want names like those from the original PS. I need to be able to scream: "DAGDA DAGDA DAGDA!" Again. :)
Also Drugasken gives me a funny memory of a com-all that read "Remember Kiddies, don't take Drugs unless they are GOOD!"
And who can forget our favorite capital, Gunuku.

I've always been a fan of naming various regions of the map so it looks and feels like a real map with some history behind it. I approve of this post ;)

"Battle of the Bulge"
Depends how it is generated. Would be a cool idea if a X amount of players fought at a certain spot that it is being named and shown on the map for a period of time.

Guys I know some of you think im all out for making a list, but im just trying to pull some of the land features from the game to keep us interested. As the new maps look amazing, we really dont see enough of the world, but what we have soon look bloody marvellous!
Its just a crazy idea and no I don't expect SOE to join in, I just mean for us as the community and gamers.

I think part of what makes it a good idea though is how easy it would be for them to add I doubt it would take almost any time or resources.
