I
Have a plan:
Wait for it....
a little longer....
I plan on building...
Wait for it....
A Death Star to destroy the Enterprise in 19 years. Once the Enterprise comes online....BOOM!

The amount of jobs that this would create.... I say go for it.

How about we forget building this and the space elevator and instead build the worlds most enormous pyramid ever!
A pyramid so large that it would pierce threw the atmosphere into the vacuum that is space. The pyramid would be so large and massive that it would literally change the gravitational pivot of the planet. Of course though this would ultimately lead to our end and would utterly be impossible but who cares!
(imagines the planet folding around it as the pyramid sinks into the earth in an unnatural way lol).

If we build it on the correct part we might undo our axis tilt.
Then it will always be 1 season everywhere!

Alright just because I thought it'd be hilarious to see what this might actually look like i plopped a pyramid in terragen lol.

Bit smaller than I suspected but still pretty fucking large lol

A pyramid that large would need the material mass equivalent of 80% of the Moon.

We can use the moon for materials!!!!

BACK ON TOPIC LOL
I'm a huge treky and if this is really built one day you can bet i would be part of (or try too be) the crew.

hmm interesting design...
but i am missing a feature...
it has to have a giant sticker on the butt saying "we break for nobody!"
if three ion engines permanently accelerate the ship, how is it going to stop?
does it have to turn around at half distance and use the engines to slow down again?
too bad that building the cooler spaceships like stardestroyers or the death star would counter the symbolic ideals of this operation ;)

Star Destroyer would be a more practical design at least.

Too bad the "gravity ring" is at the wrong angle. Its axis of spin should be in line with the direction of thrust. That way you could have the rooms adjust, using the thrust for gravity while accelerating or decelerating, and use the centrifuge for gravity while the ship was stationary or in ballistic flight.
The enterprise is a beautiful ship, but it's a pretty terrible design unless you have all of the magic technologies from Star Trek.

A full sized Enterprise came damned close to being built in Vegas.

I remember people talking about it while I was living there. Would have been awesome. :|
Also, I fully support something like this, although I don't really care that it looks like the enterprise. Would much rather see a Star Destroyer, Pillar of Autumn, or even an alliance cruiser from Firefly:

The cool thing about building things in space is that it doesn't matter what ships are shaped. :D
Seriously, there are so many resources to exploit and discoveries to be made in our solar system alone, what are we waiting for?

One of the reasons I almost thought of supporting Newt Gingrich. He was the only one who even talked about the space program. Key word: Almost

It's probably the only thing I'm diametrically opposed to Ron Paul on. Space. We must haves it. My preshus.

I'd bet that some type of deep space mining barge gets built before anything else.

It actually matters a lot unless you're inventing physics to go along with your spaceship.

Yeah, it's real....why hasn't this been in the thread yet?
