View Full Version : TotalBiscuit has been the best bit of marketing from SOE so far...

SOE has never been known for good marketing and often have really lacklustre trailers that never do the games justice, though I did love the original SWG ones back in the day.

It's a really smart idea to give the game to popular social networking and Youtube channel people. SOE needs to get The Yogscast to do a few videos of Planetside 2 as they get millions of views per video and have 1.5 or so million subscribers and are often on the front of Youtube.

Inviting people like Notch so he shows support on Twitter and the Minecraft login screen would be great too as Minecraft is massively popular and Notch is often out spoken over what he likes.

Getting Valve on side for advertising on Steam with trailers would be another massive boost for the game, defo need to be able to download via Steam.

Make trailers more like Rockstar and less like all those bland Everquest 2 ones that have been the same format for years and use bought music lol. I mean Planetside 2 only needs to show thousands of people in battles and it will win, not one person running around on his own.

Nice plan ! getting TB was a good start though :)

TB's video already has 4k likes and that's not even half a day.

If Notch helps market Planetside then SOE's success in launching this game is sealed in the bag.

We don't want this to turn into vaporware though. I'm sure SOE has quite a number of tricks up their sleeve remaining.

It's going to be free to play. News of this game is going to cut through the internet like wildfire.

Not like those baboons at EA or Activision who spend hundreds of missions of dollars advertising so that they can trick people into buying their 60 dollar ripoffs.

Every one and their mother played League of legends because it was F2P.

I hope this game is a smash hit.

Its our job to pimp the game as well.
I can babble on about how good PS2 looks to my mates but show them videos like TB's or the GDC and blow their minds. Then hopefully they will tell their mates etc and so on.
Need some of those old PS1 propaganda posters.

TotalBiscuits Night Ops vid has already been watched 71.992 times at this moment.

Of course 45,129593329% of those are people rewatching it. :)

Still, nice exposure.

Honestly after watching TB's video I don't think the game is ready for its big marketing push anyway. I mean we are fans an we know what this game will be. Thus this stuff is exciting for us. But your average Battlefield player or something that never heard of Planetside probably would not be as impressed by that footage. It was mostly just TB running around a dark base talking with no one to shoot at.

I would say let this game get into beta so we can get real gameplay footage before we worry about marketing.

Yeah. Like Higby tweeted, this is just the beginning. The beginning was already long ago for us diehard fans, but this is the beginning for marketing to the masses.

Start with grass roots, big names in the gaming community who can get the word out to their loyal fans, then ramp it up as beta takes off.

yeah exactly, to everyone that is eager to see the finished product it was some fantastic footage. but all the current PS2 people already know the game isn't ready yet and will skim past the fact a turret wasn't hackable, or the balance was off or etc etc.

Besides i'm sure once some form of closed beta hits they'll be able to grab huge amounts of large-scale footage and splice together a gameplay-Teaser. showcasing the massive scale and tactical elements that make Planetside stand out.
- Around the same time they also put up their own forums i'd wager.

Would Higby and stuff beable to 'hack' our computers and get game footage based from our characters perspective to get awesome gameplay videos? Could imagine a video coming out and seeing a scene where its following you and thinking. "Wait a minute... i didn't give Higby any footage..." then dismissing that as you are now famous for being part of a Planetside 2 video. :groovy:

hah! I was just expecting higby to sit on a nearby ridge overlooking a base, as the SoE team stream across overhead and lay down heavy fire :P
But if they could implement some proper spectator functions - that'd be insanely good.
- I believe a spectator, or recording discussion was posted up a short while back

I have to agree with you on Rockstar's trailers. Instead of pumping out tonnes of dubstep, which works in some cases, they opt to go really in-depth. Would be nice to see that with Planetside 2 trailers.

Its nice to see the game getting some decent media exposure, Planetside had abysmal marketing; im more confident that SOE's marketing department are making a concerted effort this time round.

I think the 'so far' is the operative part of the statement and as many people have said the best videos will happen when there are a lot more people in game and demonstrating the real meaning of massive.

I'm sure SOE marketing know this and equally sure they are aware all of us here will help out the moment we're asked.

I still think it'd be a nice idea to let lots of people record footage of a single battle during beta then have someone at SOE composite all those clips into a trailer. It'd be cool to see a single battle from all these different perspectives, and it'd show off the massive scale really well.

I think this was floated on the PSU forums a while ago as a community thing, which would also be fine. The only major hurdle besides organization would be agreeing on a common resolution, or at least a minimum resolution.

Planetside's Reddit subscribers have already increased by about 130 since TB's video, and they had only gone up by a few in the month prior. I am not going to watch all his videos to see if he mentioned the Reddit but I bet that he has not, but if he did, subscription would probably skyrocket.

The video made it to frontpage r/games I think and r/planetside was plugged in the top comment of that thread.

Average viewers for PS2 discussion here has gone up as well I think.

Speaking of marketing, why doesn't IGN's PC section have a link to Totalbiscuit's video? Do they consider TB to be a competitor I suppose?

I'm pretty sure TB has been involved in the IPL (IGN pro league) so I dunno. Planetside really isn't getting any buzz there and TB's youtube channel isn't real media like they usually cover.

The Yogscast did a video about the first PS2 trailer, but I don't think they know anything about it really.

I think Notch made a tweet quite a while back saying he played and enjoyed the original Planetside, so he could be a good media source if they were to contact him.

Youtube advertising is something I have been advocating since day 1. I emailed Smed last july about it, and he forwarded my email to the VP of Sales and Marketing, who said it was something they were definitely looking into.

Next week, Tray is on 'special assignment' to LA. Because I like spreading rumors, I predict he is delivering game assets to freddiew or corridordigital, so they can create an amazing action video...possibly to introduce PS2 at E3.

Lewis from the Yogscast I believe actually knows something about Planetside/2. I think they will be checking it out in the future. I've posted about getting the Yogscast to help advertise Planetside 2 multiple times on PSU.

Other than freddiew, TB, and Yogscast, we have to get Seananners to make a video as well. SOE: FLY SEANANNERS TO YOUR STUDIO. He would also be a highly respected, person to help advertise PS2.

Youtube is the best source of advertisement for games right now. SOE shouldn't waste these opportunities. What it comes down to is: Don't feed them bullshit. Let them do what they want, and they will help everyone.

I don't think too much ads is needed before game is even in beta.

Although it might catch people's attention, they will be highly disappointed that they can't even play the game yet. And some of them might forget about PS2.

Also animation isn't completely ready, which means some people may think it's a buggy game or something.

Smed is really a cool guy, not the typical CEO you can imagine.

Letting TB make videos for their games is really a clever move. If SOE released a video on their own instead, people would not even give it a watch.

Yeah their so-called 'official trailers' tend to suck most of the time, while some fanmade movie = superb!

So I also agree that in this time, they do awesome youtube ad to induce many people

Game Informer had the interview with Higby a few months ago, and they have had it in their last 2 mags as well, in the section were they just write a small paragraph about a bunch of upcoming games. So, no new info, but still getting PS2 out there. They loved the first one, so this should receive a lot of good coverage from them as well once things start coming out.

Last year I sent Smokejumper (Dave Georgeson) suggesting that SOE create a machinima for EQ Next and PS2, either a decent length movie or a short series, like Red Vs. Blue or Strongbad, etc. That's something which would be a big hit with more than just the gaming community, but even within the gaming community an enjoyable series spreads like wildfire.

Sure, once the games go live some fans would be able to do this, but I think it would be VERY potent advertising to use the game engine and assets to make a Sony Pictures produced series before the games launch (and perhaps as an on going serial afterwards).

I agree with the OP's point and he has some good ideas. I would love to see Yogscast for example do some PS2 coverage.

But it's worth mentioning that PS2 is still in late alpha development - and SOE hasn't even started marketing it yet. Aside from TB's videos (and soon whatever Hamma shows us from his trip), the only other exposure PS2 has had was GDC which is targeted at fellow game developers moreso than media.

I'm sure in time (over closed and open beta) PS2 will get a lot more exposure than we're used to seeing.

for the kind of trailers i think this kind of trailers (( BUT ON PS2 scales )) could be a way better than the lame rockstar pub !
