View Full Version : Physics Might Allow Riding on Top of Vehicles

While just gathering my nightly PS2 info, I spotted something... peculiar when looking through TRay's tweets.
https://twitter.com/PS_TRay/status/206487696699437057
"I just went Galaxy surfing"
Now, this may seem mostly as just the idea of something silly and funny. TRay jumped on a moving Galaxy for a moment and had some fun. but it could also shed a bit of light into the physics engine when it comes to vehicle and character interaction.
COULD it actually be possible that we could jump on top of a tank and use it as transportation without entering it?
If TRay could have stayed on a Galaxy without too much trouble for a bit of time, it could be very possible with a slower vehicles to stay on top of it, without some horrible run over glitch from being on top. To be able to actually "surf" the Galaxy, surely this could give a bit of insight into our most crazy dreams of PS2 mobilization.
We don't know how long he was on, what angle it had to tilt for him to stay on, or if he was just knocked off immediately after jumping on. But it certainly is an entertaining thought!

Would you get silly things like people sitting on wings as in BF Heroes?

That was always fun to do in Halo, until we got 'splattered', but that would be funny to see, a galaxy with people inside then people on top to carry almost double the amount of people. And this would be cool for tanks, because in real life tanks are used as transports. But since there is no dedicated seating position for us soldiers we will have to settle for standing awkwardly on a tank.

Hahah, I LOATH that commercial so much. It makes no sense.
But a Sunderer is far too tall to jump on anyways. More likely there will be tanks with players on them if it's possible.

oops. That was a random image of an Indian train. Didn't know it was in a commercial. Not a bad/offensive one I hope?

oh, and that's what jet packs are for, no?

Actually, I thought it was one of the new commercials out for some sort of "quiet" train they got. They show a train made of nothing but hundreds of people and how "quiet" it is. How hundreds of people in the form of a train is "quiet" is beyond me.
And I did not think of jet packs, but now I'm picturing two jetpackers of opposing factions fighting with knives on top of a Sunderer ala James Bond on a train style.

haha. On the wing of a Gal more like :)
Or I could drop from my burning scythe onto the wing of your mossie and pull you from the cockpit with my bare hands!

Ho? Sounds like you got yourself a plan. Too bad that would never work on someone like me. I'm an NC Galaxy pilot trained in the art of Clegging. You'd end up flattened if you landed on the top wings of a clegged Galaxy when it parks.

yeah, but you didn't realise I had certed with the physics glitch that makes Galaxies weightless, otherwise known as "Clegg-away" :)

Lol. And if you could get 2 scantily-clad female maxes on the wing of an attacking Galaxy, the defending base would be full of maxes that rolled over on their backs and couldn't get up after trying to "lock on" to the view!

"Scantily clad MAX", now THAT'S an oxymoron.
If you're able to tell if a MAX is female or male from the looks alone, you will deserve a cookie good sir!

Brings me back to my BF 1942 days. B-17 bomber taking off with a jeep on each wing. Oh the memories.

How about the ability to magnetize boots so you can stand on vehicles? LOL, silly, yes...but actually, how about the actual ability to sit on tanks and you only get bumped off if they really go fast or fall, or something?

you could do this in PS,we used to put two NC Sparrow AA maxes on a Phantasm and lift them up above the CY to shoot down air,you could also get maxes on the top of towers that way too.
you couldn't move fast and you had to be careful but it could be done.

The vanu just used their MAX jumpjets. :p
This could go 2 ways,
Cartoon physics and we suffer wing-walking MAX suits until the devs prevent vehicles from being mounted while moving.
Or there will have enough physics/friction/"air-resistance" that mounting is ok, but staying on is only possible at low speeds with minimal turbulence/hillcrests (AV bait, kill the transport and all those troopers come raining down, only an agile would not die on impact), anything faster/rougher would get you "leashed" off the vehicle in the direction its traveling/leaning

you could get any max to the top of towers by plugging a motion sensor to the wall and using it as a step. no need for acrobatic airlifting ;)
but there were other places where airlifts were useful, like the antennas in bases or some trees. especially when fighting against vanu who never expect any maxes to be in those places but their own.
in fact i was already planning on trying every way of stupid airlift tactics in ps2 beta ;)
breaking the physics is so much fun! and it should be sorted out early, what has to be considered an exploit and what is a legit tactic. (lifting a soldier to the top of a amp station seems legit, but lifting a tank by two galaxys seems more like an exploit)

i think we just found the reason lock down is making an appearance in ps2... all aircraft need to have at least 1 aa max locked down to the roof....
i just got nerd chills from imagining a gg with 2-3 flak maxes locked to the roof...
or a scythe with a max locked to the roof... the max does the aa and the scythe takes out every tank in sight...

I am talking about putting scat maxes on the roof so we could push down, you cannot do that with a friggin motion sensor.
Shogun
2012-05-27, 11:17 AM
you could get ANY max to ANY towertop to push down with a single motion sensor placed correctly.
it didnĀ“t work for base-roofs, but for towers it was easy to do.
edit: but i guess you mean dropping a max on an enemy tower like a hotdrop just without a galaxy. yep. that was a little hard to do with motion sensors ;)

bless you Shogun for letting me know that I wasnt the only one in the original Planetside to put a max on the roof of a galaxy in an effort to weasel them into places they werent supposed to go. was always a fun time trying to run to keep up with it as it flew off in any given direction though.

If they don't give us galaxy gunships, two TR AV maxes could lock down onto the bottom of an overturned liberator turning it into one! :)

This topic reminded me of the final battle in Avatar. Remember the marines that were "entrenched" on the back of the shuttle? Would be awesome if we could do something like that.

That would be awesome actually. I'd LOVE to see soldiers fighting from the back of a dropship.

I'm wondering more and more about the physics engine they've come up with. We saw in TB's video that bullets caused him to tip over (or he ran into a pipe, not sure which) if that's the case then external force can be applied to objects one of which is hopefully infantry. This would mean that you could stop, have infantry hop on the tank, drive off at a slower pace with the infantry still on top, if you made sharp turns or sudden stops however I'd imagine that the infantry would fall off of the tank like they would if they were on top of a car.
Right now though, I'm wondering what happens to the corpse of aircraft that are shot down. I have this mental video of a VS shooting down a reaver with a lancer and standing there as it's charred corpse comes slamming down in front of him, hits with a crash, and bounces passing just over his head. I just think that would be the most badass thing ever. Of course if the corpse hits you well, that's some damage.

TB caught the Libs engine pod on a building strut, hence why he was pulled into a circular path instead of just getting pushed in the direction of the force.

I'm at work and can't check, but in the air-combat trailer, I believe I saw a corpse being flung out of the wreck of a burning plane. Will check later - good excuse to watch it again!
edit - nah, it was just the burning wreck of the first mozzie that got blown up.
