View Full Version : Whispering your enemy, will it work in a Free to Play game?

So in PS1 you could directly whisper to any player on the server, even enemies on the other faction. This created for some interesting opportunities and hilarious situations. But will it work in a free to play game, where there's much less at stake for a less-than-civil player? It worked in PS1, but what about PS2?
In a free to play game, where you can just make another account anytime, what's there to help keep the community civil? Should we enable communication with the enemy, especially through whispers? Local taunts are fine, but direct communication? What about local chat?
Some possibilities: like League of Legends and Steam, you must first add someone on your friends list in order to receive whispers.Or we can leave it like PS1, unlimited personal whispering, but obviously with an ignore
Gameplay possibility: implants to enable "hearing" enemy's local chat, which is normally not possible.

I didn't particularly like it in PS1 but people seem to think it's a fair tactic so it's probably staying in.

Hate tells is easily the best part of Planetside.
As in many other games as well.

Hate tells were the biggest compliment one could ever get. There are plenty of reasons why I hope they keep cross faction tells in game but that has to be one of the main reasons.
It worked great in PlanetSide. I loved it. That said, the community was nothing like it is in the average multiplayer game these days. I can't see it working well in any new title honestly, much less a F2P. I'll miss it, but I don't think it will be allowed. It's probably for the best.

I wish I would have thought to SS some of mine. The one I will never forget was back when you could still instakill people by running them over. I ran over an autorunning TR max with a mag. He called me a no skill ******. To which I replied, you are not worth the waste of ammo. Which lead to more raging.

lol, champion.
I used to have alot more, these are just from a 3 month period in 2007.
But yea, been serious with raging kids isn't worth the time, best to play the superiority or stupid response card, continued hate is insured. I wish i played in the mag mowing days, it would have been glorious.

I got more hate tells than friendly tells. It's nice being able to whisper an enemy and congratulate them on a good kill or something, but on the other hand it is a bit annoying getting hate spam. Personally I don't think cross-team comms are really that needed. People spamming local chat with "TR SUX DIX" over and over doesn't add to the game. People messaging you and calling you a bunch of bad words doesn't add to the game. And all for the sake of the very rare "nice shot" or something? I don't know. Seems like it isn't worth it.

Lol the mag mowing hate was epic, Bloodstar and I used to tagteam AMS bubbles and just drive in circles killing everyone as they spawned.

lol like 2 lawnmower blades. I can imagine why OSP has so many kills so fast then. But what to exploit in PS2?...hrm.

I hope you can. I'll /t someone and compliment them if I think they got the drop on me. I think it's normally taken the wrong way though.

x2. if i had a good fight with someone I would just send them "hate tell" and almost always got a laugh back in return.

Why? If I had a good fight with someone I usually sent them a "GF" (good fight) or "NS" (nice shot).
Like I said, I haven't played a game recently with a mature enough community to allow cross-faction communication. I've played a few that tried it and have had to remove it, though... Pretty sad since the average gamer these days is in his late 30s, but I guess these are the people who leave their kids unattended on the PC and let them spew the filth, never bothering to teach them why they shouldn't mimic assholes.
The negativity and bigotry have just become too wide-spread. Like I said, I don't know if shitty parents are to blame or just the increased acceptance of gaming as a hobby, but something terrible has happened to the gaming community.

I guess the reason why was because most people got the spirit that it was sent in.

perhaps limit the amount of /t ing that a brand new character can do until 24hrs has past?

i think the amount of tells a free play user can send would be limited anyway.

Seriously?....lol
I see no problem here, I don't even how this could even be a concern.
First of all I love /t...It was fun getting insulted.
If you can't handle it, just /ignore or just create an option for no receiving /t from enemies and even allies unless they are your friends.
Problem solved, now lets not make stupid restrictions on the number a /t a person can do or not.

Keep it in, stick in an optional profanity filter and an ignore function.
Hate tells were the funniest thing, especially when the other guy was chronically uninformed

I hope they keep it in. +3 for hate tells being some of the most entertaining things ever in chat. Hell, half the time it was the only reason my chat window was open. The other half of the time it was only if I was [making an attempt at] leading or directing the zerg.
One of my favorite screenshots from when I OS'd a massive raid gathering behind the main front...IIRC I got 2-3 sunderers, 2 galaxies, an AMS, a bunch of foot troops trying to get a ride, and barely missed a prowler and another galaxy.

My favourite moment was fairly early on in the game when people were still learning the ropes. I was running from point A to point B in an anti-infantry max when I happen to run across an enemy AMS.
I knew it would take forever to bring it down with my weapons loadout, so I mention to my platoon what is happening at my position, tell them to bring a tank, and continue to pick off the troops that spawn in at that location.
I got called everything in the book within a span of 5 minutes, but the common theme was, I am not "fighting fair or honourably", but said with very colourful language. I giggled, war is not, and never was fair, even in a simulated form.
Unfortunatly, when the game comes out, it will be full of thin-skinned man-children who dish it out but can't take it. The best respect to give your enemy, because we all need enemies for this game to thrive, is to simply move on. If you don't respect your enemy, or grief them in any form, even if you are my beloved TR, don't play this game.

F2P generally allows for more people to come into a game, and not just immature people. People who are younger tend to be more obnoxious (obviously)... I'm just going to say it's asking for it if we give the "whisper" to everyone =/

There isn't much doubt within me that cross faction talk shouldn't exist, whilst it doesn't necessarily add to the experience (or as Warborn pointed out, it can actually detract) it would seem wrong to have it missing.
That said, I think it needs to be an optional choice... and that it needs to be off by default. This allows people who want to use it to do so at their own peril, but those wanting to opt out can do so. To clarify, if you had it off you wouldn't be able to send or receive cross faction messages.
I mean heck, even then someone very dedicated would still make a new account to /t you from the same faction if they were that mad.
So I think it should remain, but allow for some mitigation of the less pleasant aspects of the feature.

Disable /t until you reach BR3 or something, Disable cross faction /t until you reach BR10 or something.
Won't stop people logging alts to abuse people but it will mean you can't just create a new char if someone ignores you.
As an additional thing, i'd like ignore to be account wide, all my chars all their chars, not that i tend to use it but if i did that's how i'd like it.

i say no cross faction /t till you spend at least 10$ or something in the shop, and played at least 10 hours.
Thats just for two reasons: 1. Avoid a flood of random spam coming at you (gold sellers anyone? Who knows what they try to sell in PS2) and 2. keep those noobs save a little longer. One need to be prepared for his first hate tell. ;)

Has to be in. Matt stated in his opinion the main reason for PS1 longevity was rivalries. Nothing fosters that like a some cross faction smack talk. I quite frankly can't imagine the game without it.
I agree, but smack talk and a lack of respect are two different animals.

Rivalries definitely played a large factor. Notoriety and prestige for outfits and players alike. Let's think of some names off the top of my head here (and keeping in mind I haven't touched PS1 since 2004-ish):
Anakin
LazyT/Tyzal
SGswift
GODJOEY (I know, I know)
Malorn
BuzzCutPsycho
SturmGrenadiers
Serious Gamers
Ahriman Corps
The Enclave
1st Cavalry Midget Mobile
666th Devil Dogs (weren't even on my server and I knew who they were)
etc, etc. Tons more I'm either forgetting or don't want to butcher their names. Persistent world = persistent player reputation, for better or for worse.

I'm fine with it in, but would like to see some kind of restriction on it to prevent people from being annoying with infinite accounts. Maybe have it be something that can be bought through the cash shop, earned after however many hours of play time or only be available to "subscribers" (assuming they have some kind of monthly membership plan).

I'd like to agree with the BR limit or any of the other limits suggested, but I feel that it unfairly punishes new players.
To expand on your latter point though, I'd like ignores to be account wide for those ignored too. If I ignore someone on one character why would I wish to hear them on another?

The Hate Tell was one of the best features of Planetside. That said I hope they restrict cross-faction communication. I believe it detracts from faction loyalty. I've played games with and without (easy) cross-faction communication and I definitely enjoyed the games without it better.
With free accounts you can't stop it but that doesn't mean they need to make it easy. People can always make accounts to come tell you how much you suck after you own them, but that's a few more steps than just typing a sentence to them whenever you want.
I'd like to see the game fostering cross-faction hate by restricting communication rather than making communication easy so we can get all buddy-buddy.

Personally, the time when it was just me in agile+sweeper versus a rexo+pshield+JH in a tower dueling, killed him 4 times in a row then left, between each kill increasingly hilarious rage tells, was one of my favorite times in PSide. The ego boost is always welcome.
