Dev's what would be the possibility of introducing the maps of the graphically updated original 10 Planetside continents and the Battle Islands into Planetside 2? HINT, HINT.

To the community, how would you guys feel about that?

I think you misunderstand what the developers are trying to do. The old maps were very simple. Forgelight is allowing them to make real maps with more complex layouts. Bringing the old Planetside continents 1:1 back would be a huge waste of time. I really like how they're reinventing them and just taking the basic biome styles.

The only parts of PS continents anyone ever really sees are the bases themselves, and those are all pretty much identical. Also, the scale would be wrong, and there is so much more possible with the new engine that I would prefer new, properly designed maps. I wouldn't mind using the biome themes and general base layout for inspiration, but so much would have to be changed that a map could never really be a port.

I'd rather see a few more continents in the PS2 style. 4 or 5 like Indar would probably give us more fighting space than we ever had in the first Planetside, and if they succeed in reaching the 2000 players per continent mark, 5 continents would provide 10,000 players per server, double what PS1's original 10 continents would allow.

Years ago we would place AMS's on the islands north of Hossin. A VS outfit would do the same then we would do a TR, VS outfit war offshore off Hossin. Other times we would just place AMS's offshore of the conts and we would use those areas as attack points. Some people appreciated battle away from the bases and found ways in planetside to make such battles enjoyable. Believe me no one was happier then me when I first heard Matt Higby say that every square inch of the continents will be contestable land. Man did I hear a chorus of angels, after wishing that for so many years. lol.

I logged onto planetside 1 the other day and ran around the facilities just lol'ing and going "man, there's literally nothing around these bases." I forgot how barren most of the continents were.

have you guys talked about possibly adding a level editor to the game some day? Something that would allow players to create their own facilities using building block style components?

Instead of bringing them back make miniature islands out of them. Just scale em down quite a bit and allow a smaller number of players on them.

They have every intentions to bring all the old continents back in some form. Heard it from one of these GDC 'behind the scene' videos. And from Higby's reddit Q&A, I saw that they were already working on at least one PS1 continent for PS2. (not one of those 3 launch continents which are confirmed already)

And compare the PS1 continents' attention to detail to that of PS2. No match for me. Do you guys know the reason why the size of landmasses of TES(Elder Scroll series) got shrinked as time goes on? (Daggerfall and Skyrim. Simply not even comparable)

Wow thanks, Great news for me. I mean the Searhurs volcanic crater, Ceryshens cliffs, the 6 hour battle between the TR and NC on a Cyssor bridge. Man those places bring a lot of memories.

Cyssor was fun when it was an NC home continent. You had either the Tr vs NC or the VS vs NC. In the last 5 years or so all people look for is 3 way fights. This wouldn't be bad here and there but it has become the norm. Especially on Cyssor. So i understand your view. But in 2003,2004,2005 Cyssor was great to fight at.

Yup original Vs home Cont. It was so hard to drive anything around that cont that the TR and NC usually ignored it. Clearly VS vehicles had an advantage at Oshur. Maybe that's why it was always purple.

I can see how you would think this from the game's current state, however I have had some of my most memorable PS1 fights in these "barren" areas. I can assure you that I have had a fight at damn near every square inch of every continent. I hope that you do not oversee the value of these "barren" areas as they were defiantly damn good for air battles at the very least.

So many confined themselves to base battles. They never really appreciated the whole map. These maps are great and i enjoyed every square inch of each cont. Well except for Esamir my least favorite.

I think he was rather talking about the 'attention to detail' when it comes to landscape and various props and stuffs.

There were definitely great battles back in the day that were away from bases where tanks, snipers, grunts and air all fought. Its where me and my Lancer met. We've been happy to this day, and now our little Lancelets are growing up and becoming new tools for destruction in PS2, I hope!

Be carefull what you wish for: for all we know they could put them in as miniatures, hidden somewhere in a base under a glass cover. Or as an old map on a wall with a bit 3outdated" stamp on it.

it'd still be in the game, just not the way you expected it. :p

The terrain on most current continent are a pain. For driving there are a lot of those sharp edged ridges plus the holes that you can fall into and find it difficult if not impossible to get out of.

Some of the bases are too difficult to approach and too easily become 'farmer' bases, HVAR, YAZATA and ATAR.

Cyssor links are bad, the LLU run fro Aja to Chuku in the top cormer and in the bottom is the bridge from Tore to Leza which is too long. The end result is predictable and sometimes week long stalemates.

The rest isn't bad. I think the key to a good continent is:

it doesn't promote static battles
the terrain provides encouragement to both ground troops and armour (air can take care of themselves)
it looks cool

Searhus, Forseral, Esamir are good continents, you could say Ish was too if you ignore the norther west corner.

I'm sure they plan to bring some of the continents back, but the maps will be completely redone. The old ones simply wouldnt fit into what PS2 is trying to achieve.

They ARE bringing Esamir and Amerish as the other two launch continents. Those were two of my favorite continents to fight on, but I think I just expect to have my mind blown with how much more detailed the terrain will be this time.

In the olden days, we picked a path based on whether we were going by Deliverers (and variants), tanks, or air. I feel that here, those kinds of choices will be even more crucial, and then there's the whole customization aspect of it... if I lead an outfit who's equipment specialization is tanks, we will probably have a customized transmission that allows us to climb steeper hills available to our members, so now you could expect us in places we couldn't go before. But finding and picking those paths will be a whole different story from PS1. And then there's nighttime, and driving without headlights... I mean...

You can tell I get all giggidy just thinking about all this.

Personally, I liked Cyssor. I hope it's eventual return is amazing.
Searhus too.

I like what we've seen, don't get me wrong...but there's gotta be areas that aren't quite so vertical. Steppes and plains and stuff. Seahus and Cyssor would offer a good mix.

Considering one of the things they've been touting is how their continents are actually hand-crafted to be really interesting to fight over this time, I'd say zero.

Yeah I may be wrong but the way I see it is, how hard would it be to take a Planetside map and upgrade it to PS2. I'm sure that the easiest thing to do on a Planetside map is to introduce more capture points and divide the map into hexes. The question seems to me to be whether thats's in the plans of the dev team or not. Whether that is because it has already been decided that new continents is the way to go be it for legal reasons or any other that I would see but not because of technical reasons.

I want Ceryshen back, simply because it would cause years of tears. Never has any continent been so universally loathed.

I remember when it went neutral for an event... and nobody showed up.

I got that feeling in March when I last resubbed. The game world was so empty, but it just echoed with the sounds of battles past. Even on an empty map, with Don's music playing, it was great just to stand and catch the memories of battles lost and won that were blowing on the wind.

I was never a big fan of Ceryshen, although I never hated it either. It's probably just because I never had a ton of fun there, since there were never as many battles there, thus never as many awesome memories. Of course, I tended to stay in the air a lot of the time, so the crazy geography rarely affected me one way or the other.

But come on, the Ceryshen bridge battle. Who doesn't have some fond memories of that shit? I so want Ceryshen to return for that reason alone. We've already seen that awesome bridge on Indar, but I would hope that they would custom build an even bigger, even more epic and badass bridge to be the mother of all bridges on Ceryshen V2.0.

I think that with the Forgelight engine, the custom tailored environments, and the hex territory system, they could do a lot to make something similar to Ceryshen be a lot more popular in PS2.

One thing Planetside didn't have was small foot hills where only soldiers/stupid farming mossies could get to. I'd like to see some hills and such where only infantry could get to and battle for, none of these jaggedy messed up land formations from PS1. Small paths branching off into the brush, trees blocking the view of air, rock formations to climb around and get cover from incoming fire, that would be some good fighting.

I too loved Cery, even when I wasn't a pilot. I think most hated it because it was ruthless and difficult to win without a lot more strategy than normal. In other words, it was too hard for the vast majority to bother with.

Cery had the most dynamic and unpredictable fights of any continent. You could literally call each and every move each and every empire would make on Cyssor before the continent was even opened. Yet, people still flocked too it like little BEP Lemmings.

I didn't like driving on Cery. The maps for Cery didn't show the mountain regions too well and I often tried to take shorcuts but ended up running into mountains or off of them.
