Is it just me... or does it look like the tech plant layout has much less going on for it than PS1? It looks so simple... it's just a few stairs, a platform in the middle with random walls and four (?) control consoles. I liked the winding tunnels and rooms in the basements of the PS1 bases... there were lots of ways to get to an area. I kinda hope there's more to them than that.

Yep, I agree, when I saw that tech plant I was expecting multiple levels with a stair well or hall way leading all the way up to the platform on top. From what I saw.. well I was less then impressed. Keep in mind I realize this is still a work in progress.

Gotta agree with this. It seems like they're trying to make everything way more open. I haven't seen many areas I've thought looked really conducive to straight up Infantry vs Infantry combat.

The main building for the tech plant was wide open sure, and it should be since it is going to have the most people in it fighting over it at any given time. The buildings surrounding the tech plant however, and the other capture points, those will probably be much smaller in scale and therefore they might resemble PS1 bases a little bit more. Keep in mind the numbers of people the devs expect to be fighting in certain areas, and then consider the logistics of creating an area that has to hold hundreds of players =/

Yeah we didn't see too much of the rest of the tech plan, mostly the garage/vehicle spawn.

I think this is more conducive to Infantry vs Infantry combat than the maze of chokepoints called bases in Planetside 1. Especially since the number of players is being greatly increased and the TTK is going up aswell.

Am I the only one who was going "WTF IS THAT BIGASS CANNON?!" in the tech plant? And they just kept waltzing on by like it wasn't there...but it looked like it had some type of control panel or something under it. I was thinking it would make a kickass base defense weapon...drop a wall and bombard attacking forces with it, but give it a slow traverse and everything. Maybe even give it enough range to hit another base?! O_o Meta game - capture the mega-weapons?

Agree with thoughts on indoors, looks easy to fly a scythe or drive a lightning in though.

Thought:
The NC are screwed on Indar.

Reason:
They live in the only temperate region on the cont. If there's one thing that PS has taught me it's that people like to fight in grassy areas rather than desert areas.

Also, no epic screen shot comparing the night/day when looking at that engine fire? That was beautiful.

You may remember that we got to see that cannon being made a while back and we were informed it was a piece of background that served as a capture point. I thought it was good to see it ingame as we had an idea that it would be even larger. Like bigger than a tank large.

From what we saw, I don't see how a backdoor or basement could be included, which makes me :(

I too saw that! Looked EPIC! Strange that it was indoors though. You'd think it would be outside or mounted somewhere where it could actually be useful... though I guess pointing that thing at a staircase could prove effective.... :)

They did a video on the development of that thing too...it is in fact a cannon. And for something that huge to be inside doesn't make any sense...Maybe the roof are bay doors that open and the whole platform rises out into open air or something?

It wasn't meant to be a working cannon more something that the NS Elves had been working on but weren't able to complete before the war broke out.

They said that they wanted to move away from the room-corridor-room design, cos frankly it was quite crap and made for quite horrible indoor fights.

That said, I feel there should be a bit more than what we've seen now, but I personally welcome the change.

maybe the other bases will have more indoor fighting, since all bases don;t have walls, so all bases might not have basements. But we will have to see.

I don't understand why a simple layout is instantly inferior to a complex layout.

PS1 bases objectively sucked if it was more than 30 vs 30. It was all a clusterfuck spam fest.

Exactly, so they need to make it more open. If they didn't do that, then they'd have, hell. 100 people on 100 in an corridors, that would be hilarious but really hard to play in. My computer would catch on fire if that happened. For them to support more people, they need to expand area's. The game got better, and bigger, so they need to make area's bigger or smaller depending on how important that area proves to be over time. Its all relative.

PS1 base interior fights sucked because they weren't exactly the best designed FPS maps of all time.

That doesn't automatically negate all other corridor/room design possibilities.

Multi-tiered rooms, rooms connected directly to other rooms, multiple (more than two) paths to every location, wider corridors with more cover, 'filler' rooms to spread fights out and offer flanking possibilities, etc. All of this and more could offer some pretty interesting close quarters fighting to break up the constant big/open fights.

When I watched the live stream I was wondering why the interior of bases was so empty. I rewatched the video and this time I noticed that when they are showing the Mana Turret, Matt says that the engineer will be able to build barriers and small cover pieces.

I know it's still all a work in progress but I think they may have left the rooms open and somewhat empty because they want engineers to provide most of the fortifications, instead of having static/indestructible objects that will always be at the same place. This way will make each assaults on a base somewhat different than the previous ones.

If this ends up being accurate this is great. Gives the unselfish engineer a really important role in the game.

I just love the fact that he didn't shy away from showing anything; there was no "oh, i just need to look away, that's not finished yet, don't judge us on that" it was "this is where we are, we're rushing to get it done so you guys can play it at E3."

I love the fact that he's confident enough to do that with the current state of the game and isn't apologetic at all, even about the crashes, developer confidence in a game like that rubs off on the player base and really effects peoples attitudes in my opinion!
