View Full Version : All turret rotation animations are bad

Of all types on all vehicles turret rotation animation is choppy and gamey, just like in every other such game.
Here is what it should look like
No matter the size and mounting, whether it is a tank dome or a small anti-air turret on a tank it moves smoothly from one point to other because such is the mechanism of it.
Also why does it move smoothly when in first person perspective but it is choppy looking at the vehicle from the outside?

It's in in-studio alpha. I'd expect things like this.
Also, it appears "glitchy" most likely because of latency issues.

Would probably help if you looked for a better video to make a point. The movement in that video was like 5% of the videos content :D EDIT: I see what you did there! This video is better.
As for why it looks better from first person. Probably cos it's most likely client side at that point. But from someone elses eyes they get the "ok this player is moving their turret this much" command from the server, so there's several extra "hops" it goes through

Well, because it's in alpha, and smoothing out animation issues is something reserved for beta.

This the reality of packets and server state being translated graphically unfiltered. Be honored to have seen behind the curtain before they dump an extra 50 lines of code into giving it the illusion of smoothness.

I would argue it looks choppy because the player is actually controlling the turret with the mouse. Such that it is basically a weightless entity. The question is how much realism do you want in the game ?

That too. Here's hoping for maximum traverse speed.

I love pretty much everything I've seen so far, this looks like a huge hit.
But "details" like this will really nag me if they are not fixed.
I was just hoping that they are at least aware of how it looks, most of the time developers lose sight of things from being too close to the game.

btw, is this the official Planetside 2 forum, I went to the Planetside 2 website and under community there is no forum/message board or anything...
I figured it looked choppy as fuck because he kept lifting his mouse up. That and alpha.

This is the official unofficial forums.
Basically, the devs use this over the official forums (which suck)
PSU has been in existence since 2003, so almost as old as Planetrside itself.

Things like mouse jerkiness and packet information are problems, but the game engine can be set up to smooth out what players see on their end. So in the final game, it will probably look a lot more fluid.
It does need to be fixed eventually or it will stick out like a sore thumb, but it's not worth mentioning at this early stage. If they get deep into beta and it remains like that as they near release, it would definitely be more worthy of making a stink over.
Just enjoy the footage and discuss topics that are clearly unrelated to the game still just being under construction. Appreciate that we get to see the cool stuff and ignore the little imperfections at this point.

Older! :) PSU started pre-PlanetSide release. Our 10 year anniversary is this fall.
There are no Official PlanetSide 2 forums as of yet but there will be at some point.

I really hope this is the case, but in all the years I've been following beta games the infamous "it's just beta/alpha" excuse never ever, not once, turned out to be true.

It's inevitable at some point. It will filter the community as well which may not be a bad thing. ;)

Seriously? Because I've actually seen it happen already in Planetside 2. There was some moron complaining about the environments being too sparse a few months back, shortly before we got some newer screenshots that had a lot more rocks and foliage and shit.
