View Full Version : Can this game be the biggest hit ever?

Now, I never played Planetside 1 but from being a long-time connoisseur of all types of genres, especially RPG and FPS this game certainly has all the ingredients to be much bigger than Battlefeld 3, CoD4, LoL etc.

Also I'm pretty sure many people are sick and tired of modern military shooters or WW2 shooters, even before Battlefield 3 was released I was devastated they didn't release a sequel to much better Battlefield 2142.

It is so refreshing to finally see some true SF setting( I don't count Crysis 2 because the only SF thing there is the suit, everything else is bog standard).

And what really stands out to me about Planetside 2 is the effort put in animations(not all yet (http://www.planetside-universe.com/showthread.php?p=707079#post707079)).

Seriously if the weapon animations and vehicle animations are not right, detailed and fluid depending on various motions, for me the game is dead. Animations always make everything so much better.
I'm sure this is true for many people but they don't articulate it that way, they say something like "weapons don't feel right"...

I really hope this game gets a huge marketing budget that it deserves, after all EA and Activision marketed the shit out of their games, and it is a huge factor if games succeeds or not.

Yes. All they have to do is add prone & OSOK quick knife and it will be complete. F2P means just about every FPS player with a PC will at least install it.

The only thing that stopped the original Planetside from being a huge success and changing the gaming landscape was the fact that it was SOOOO far from a casual experience. You had to be a very specific type of person to like it. That's why vets are so passionate about the original game because it was OUR game.

This game is taking the spirit of PS and making it accessible for a new audience. I hope the emphasis on allowing casual gameplay in a dynamic world pays off! If people just want to shoot then let them enjoy the game as a pure shootemup but there is still plenty of room for large organization and bigger planning.

Hopefully this game will show the more casual crowd how fun a deeper game can be!

Re animations: The game totally isn't in alpha currently.

But from what I've seen personal weapon animations are rock solid which is the most important part:

-reload animation
-iron-sight
-iron-sight while moving
-recoil
-firing
-while walking
-while running
-while jumping
-while moving your view around

There are so many games that didn't do this right and thus become instantly a flop. This is after all your basic interface with the gameworld and in the context of Battlefield 3 and Crysis 2 quality of weapon animations is quite noticeable because people grew accustomed to certain standards.

I think they've struck a great balance in this regard. If you want to just hop in and shoot things from the sounds of it this a totally viable option. If you want to play arm chair general and get your tactical e penis fix, that is also there too. Sounds like a winner to me.

Yeah, I m not so sure about F2P model, you have to be very careful and smart on how you approach this.

And sure, I played F2P games in which I spent money, like Vindictus or Battlefield free2play but I hope they know what they're doing with this model.

Though I agree I definitely would switch it around and say that the E Peens will be much larger among the hop in and shoot things crowd, judging from my experience in CoD/BF3 vs planetside 1 lol.

No worries, I was simply being a tad sarcastic on Eyeklops comment about "prone & OSOK Quick knife" being so crucial for a FPS game to feel complete.

IMO, friendly fire is a must for PS2 but who knows how it will work at release...

Honest I don't really see it happening. Well, it depends on what you mean big hit. This game cannot run that well on older, nongaming computers without dedicated graphics cards or good processors. This limits the target audience to those with above average computers. Of course, that audience is in the millions, but you gotta admit this game is going to be more hardware intensive than League of Legends or Team Fortress 2. Millions will play this game, but I don't see it reaching 30+ million like LoL

The game looks to be as graphic intensive as Starcraft 2. Thats a good sweet spot to be in, imho.

Yes graphically intensive. But what I'm mainly worried about is CPU intensive. All the models and calculations done on screen is much more than my poor laptop's Core2Duo can handle, but it can run LoL and Starcraft 2 like a champ (on low settings haha!)

Except they are making the game so it can be played on older computers. Granted it won't be at the graphic quality we see, but if it runs with no lag, then that should still be great.

But yeah, it won't be the "biggest ever" however I sincerely believe this will be a genre defining game and we will see more companies follow suit in making more MMOFPS games.

Yes, but probably the average shooter fan has a better computer than those who play LoL and such.

There's no way to know how well it will do. It could be like the first one, where it totally deserves a footnote in history, but doesn't get one. It could be the next World of Warcraft. It all comes down to good marketing, sound gameplay, bug free environment, etc..

But yes, cartoony indeed it would be.

Is there an option to turn off crosshairs, I always like to do it in every FPS so iron-sight is more relevant.

Forgetting about whether it's casualed down or bad graphics or whatever... I honestly would play the crap out of a Starcraft MMOFPS. One of many marines shooting down zerg and protoss... can specialize if you want into maurader/firebat/ghost, or drive vehicles.... BATTLECRUISER.... :O

Remember SOE

Casualizing the game might attract a few more players than if it was left with a certain difficulty like most of this forum want. However, the people who it will attract will simply leave of the next best game, and more standard players will leave as well because the gameplay does not have enough depth

Whether or not thats an individual option for a player to do themselves IDK but I am confident to say there wont be such a thing as a "hardcore" server with no reticle and no minimap and things like that.

why would you want to turn off the crosshairs anyway all thats going to do is put you at a disadvantage to everyone else?

I do in fact think this game will become a household name. It's going to be interesting to see how all us longtime PS vets react to this. I don't doubt that we will lose more than a few to the "oh, it's popular now? It must suck." mentality. I myself am glad to see PS2 become the next big thing in gaming.

I played WoW for a couple of years when it first came out. What really hooked me at the beinning was being in the dwarf captial amd seeing a couple druids seemlessly wand without breaking stride turn into cheetahs. To me anyways that was some serious wow factor. And I think PS2 has that same wow factor.

Well, all that time playing Killing Floor I guess, I can hit perfectly well without crosshairs, it's just a distraction to me now.
And I like for there to be a reason for why things are on HUD, I would only accept it if soldiers wear helmets with that kind of display and there would be lore to explain it.

I agree with that. I just dont see PS2 being the biggest hit ever. And let me clarify, that is a very very good thing. See WoW caters to the masses of lemmings. which makes a great bottom line when it comes to the numbers game for blizzard. But WoW is still a terd. And you cant polish a terd. Its a piece of shit and no matter how much you sugar coat it, if you bite into it your still going to taste shit. PS2 on the other hand will (i believe), be wildly popular for all the right reasons all the while not catering to lemmings it will find and get quality players to be loyal to a much better franchise in the Planetside brand.

I've kept silent for a while. I've first played Planetside about a month after its release. Every once in a while I pop my head in and play but to be honest I'm really excited about this game.

Planetside is the only MMO and FPS I've really enjoyed. Being an old Amry vet, I appreciate the esprit de corps that no other FPS or MMO can offer. Planetside encourages teamwork to work towards a goal much larger than yourself.

I think it will be a hit. Some friends of mine that are FPS players are wanting to ditch their PS2s and Xboxes for PCs because of Planetside 2. I'm glad that Higby, T-Ray and their crew are taking their time in developing this game to ensure a lot of polish and to live up to the hype. So far I think you guys have done a spectacular job and you can only hope the finished product will be phenomenal.

The game doesn't need to be the biggest thing ever. It has to have a nice, long, effectively monetized tail. That's what keep them running it and us playing it.

I can tell you right now that Planetside 2 will be one of the best games of all time.. Not because of the amazing, jaw dropping graphics. Not because of the massive scale of this game or the epic battles that are going to take place.. Not any of that... It has to do with the development team, this game is going to be one of the greatest games of all time because of people like Higby, and all of the staff working on ps2. I know that they put the community first, which is almost unheard of in games today.

I have never looked forward to a games beta so much... Let alone the release. Ever in my life.. And it because of what the staff at ps2 is doing.

Planetside 2 -18,000,000 (2013)

Assuming they don't add another map in the first year and only *25% of the player-base is online at any given time. SOE would need 750 shards to handle this many players. Amazing.. That's allot of server shards.

If they update to 10 maps, 225 shards.

If they update to 10 maps and only 9,000,000 players actually play the game SOE will still need 113 shards.

If the game tanks, and only 1,000,000 players enjoy the wonders of PS2, they will probably not increase map count by much, lets say 5 total. The number of shards needed would be about 3

Now..to put this into perspective. Planetside 1 ran quite a few years only having 3 shards.

*Made up low-ball number, and all numbers prior to and henceforth are total bullshit

It definitely has potential. If it has a good enough launch and can keep players in (recent MMO's have a trend of losing subscribers fast, but that's another story), then it has every reason to be very successful.
