Im taking a leap of faith but I think Planetside 2 is gonna be succesful in terms of business. I think they are going to get a lot of people to play it and I think they are gonna start a MMOFPS revolution....
Perhaps Planetside 2 won't live up to they hype of some of the Planetside 1 veterans but is still gonna be successful IMO.
So when this MMOFPS revolution starts, who do u guys think is gonna jump the bandwagon and steal Planetside's thunder....
I feel that Bungie is gonna make a Halo MMOFPS in fact I think bungie is making an MMOFPS already....if it comes out in e3...Is gg for Planetside 2 coverage.
I also see CoD jumping the bandwagon...They have a fanbase that play the game 24/7, and they would pay for monthly subscription I bet....and they are partners with Acti-blizzard so they could pull it off
Battlefield 3 might as well but im not sure if they would.....perhaps very later.
Planetside 2 has uniqueness right now since it will be the only MMOFPS on a massive scale but once the other popular games make MMOFPS...I wonder if Planetside 2 will be able to hang.
Planetside 2 will also be free so thats a plus...Doubt Halo,COD,BF MMO will be free.
I also expect Planetside 2 on PS4 eventually.

Blizzard. Where blizzard goes, they destroy everything. Most popular strategy game of all time: Starcraft/Starcraft 2. Most popular dungeon crawl/fastest selling PC title ever pretty much: Diablo 3. Biggest MMO by more than double anything else: WoW. Most likely next biggest strategy game waiting to come out, Warcraft 4. Only possible MMORPG that can topple WoW? The next blizzard MMORPG.
In ever genre they have a game it's the biggest hit of them all. They have a fanbase so rabid it can devour anything. Makes me afraid.
Blizzard hasn't made a shooter though.

Not a big fan of cod and bf3. That shit is too frantic.
I really don't even see how you can look into this to be honest. I doubt any other major studios are looking at doing a MMOFPS at the moment. If anything PS2 will the the testing ground to see if this is will be a new hit in the gaming space. If it is we will see them however it will probably be years after PS2 is release. I personally see it as potentially a highly competitive genre, especially going the F2P model. If PS2 is big they will have a huge advantage verse potential MMOFPS games coming out in the future. PS2 could easily become the WoW of the genre...

I really hope so but WoW wasn't the first MMORPG. But it was a Blizzard game. They hadn't made an MMO before WoW so to say they haven't made a shooter doesn't seem to matter I think it's there community and fans as a developer that carry them.
If they use an existing IP like Starcraft for an MMOFPS it's curtains for PS2 as the top dog.
But yea I agree CoD could probably do it too. Except the only reason I'd think maybe not is because CoD's audience isn't PC based as much and part of what people love about CoD is the small scale quick gameplay, if it became an MMO it wouldnt be CoD

Could you imagine the brand loyalty that a Star Wars MMOFPS with space combat would instantly inspire?

Planetside 2 isn't the first MMOFPS either.
I think with all the attention PS2 is starting to get that any future MMOFPS will have the 'wowclone' effect.
I realize that I just think Blizzard has an inherent domination effect just because people always buy into their games. They do a fantastic job with brand loyalty.
People say WoWclone because it's the most succesful MMORPG they wont say its a PS2 clone if it does better than PS2. People are going to mimic success and it's too early for there to be people pointing fingers for copycats cause theres only 3 games to ever do persistant world PvP only FPS.
And I don't think a Star Wars MMOFPS would necessarily have much brand loyalty look at The Old Republic that game isn't breaking any records.
With all this said I do hope PS2 is the most succesful MMOFPS for years if not until PS3!! Even if more MMOFPS come out I know I will stick with Planetside because I love the factions, the setting, everything about it. A Modern warfare MMOFPS doesn't seem interesting to me really.
And don't get me wrong I think Planetside 2 has a HUGE advantage being the first but I still can see a HUGE popular developer with a huge IP toppling it from pure fanboyism.

Well, CoD already has a premium subscription plan and BF3 just got one too... So it's not far fetched to think that an FPSMMO is the next logical step. I'd support that decision, at least for Battlefield. Think Planetside scale but with destructible environments. It'll come one day.
Does PS2 have any competition right now? No, not really. It's pretty one of kind in terms of massive scale warefare. BF3 would be closest and it's still light years away in terms of scale.

Honestly, if the can execute it successfully, or similarily to Planetside 2, I think 343 Industries and Microsoft are next in line to create the next great MMOFPS with Halo. I mean think about it. They already have several distinct factions (the UNSC,the Covenant Empire, and the Insurrectionists), several long dead alien races from which to study technology (the Forerunners and Precursors), a rich backstory, and literally hundreds of fertile bafflefields (the Halo array, Reach, Harvest, EARTH, Sanghelios, Arcadia, the Ark, ONYX, and Eridanus II just to name a few). And to back it all up, a HUGE, super-supportive community (me included). As long as Microsoft doesn't pull another Fox and cancel it halfway through the seaso.... development, I think it would turn out beautifully.

I believe that if Blizz/Acti wants a piece of the MMOFPS pie, it'll have to be much more than shoving the IP into the masses to buy it up.
and yes, they will buy it up, but I strongly believe half of the battle would have to do whats under that MMOFPS' hood.
that goes with any other big company to step up to the plate too. good luck trying to match Planetside 2 ambitions using the Hero Engine.

As someone comented before, they are probably starting to make MMOFPS versions of the best selling franchises of FPS, with the new engines (unreal 4, that Outera one or whatever its called) and industry going with mostly free2play option, i can see that Planetside 2 will have to endure some hard but at the end good competition in the future, the most interesting thing that will keep me playing at least for me, its that the Devs ACTUALLY LISTEN to the comunity and they are involved with us when it comes to the decisions of what the game needs as well as THE PLAYERS needs, im sure that as long as Planetside 2 keeps people interested in playing, they will keep adding things and polish it so it can stand as a game of its own, innovative, a pioneer against the competition.

I would truly be surprised if Activision developed a CoD MMO to be honest. PS2 hopes to pull in some players from the BF3/CoD crowd, and at this point PC is loosing massive headway in modern FPS titles. Most PC gamers are tired of the monotony of the existing offerings and are looking for something more meaty to sink their teeth into. Enter PS2. I think amongst PC players this game will strive, but in the console world there are too many sharks to get in the tank with. Between CoD/BF3/Dust and other offerings, PS2 venturing into console territory would be enough to stir up the giants, and while PS2 and SOE are hitting it out of the park, the mention of a CoD MMO would be a pretty fatal blow. Fanboys would be giving up first born children to play it. Considering PS2 will not put too heavy a dent into the general market share of the CoD series, which is console gamers, Activision might not be inclined to turn up the heat. Why would they waste time venturing into unexplored territory when they can make piles of money doing what they already do well. I hate that it stifles the industry, but ultimately, money is the bottom line delimiting factor for the large game companies and I don't think these companies will go out of their way to fix what isn't broken.
No matter what any other company out there does, I had the chance to be a 10 year vet of Planetside and I cut my tour of duty down to a measly 1.5-2 years. So long as the devs deliver an experience that is remotely equal with that of the original, I am in it for the long haul. I certainly hope that PS2 breathes new life into the genre and sparks some much needed genius into the FPS world. Planetside for life! :)
Isn't that unannounced "titan" MMO Blizzard has been working on for the last five years rumored to be an MMOFPS? If it is, history may repeat itself and Blizzard may steal SOE's thunder again.

One of the more popular rumors is that it's a Starcraft MMOFPS, however, the analysts don't think so and the word is that it's "casual". I am unsure if "casual" and "MMO persistence" would both describe the same game.

I wanna see a COD MMO so I can laugh at their style and gaming model.
It's be an Online FPS trying to call it a MMO, with match based gameplay, but a persistent Chat Room. And it'll be pay to win model, with a pretend "free to play", but you get guns that deal no dmg, and a subscription to get bonus xp. Item mall would have ALL the guns except for 3 starter guns. Every time that unveil a new map, it'll cost 5 dollars to get it. Items like grenades would spend points, which cost money to recharge.

iirc it has been confirmed to be a new IP. I haven't heard anything about it being "casual", and I don't know that I have ever seen a casual shooter. Even so, I don't see why being labeled casual means it can't have MMO persistence. A game like Second Life is about as casual as it gets and it still has MMO persistence.

Well, I know a lot of people at Battlefield land have, in response to me suggesting a BF MMOFPS, said it was complicated. So it's not the persistence that repels the casual description I guess, but the large scale.

Relax everyone! No one is going to copy PS2, for the same reason no one copied Eve Online and everyone copied WoW.
The WoW model is about building content for your players and then leading them through it. Its fairly easy to code, well proven, everyone knows how it works and that it does fine, and it can be played casually. Its a broad market game.
Eve and PS2 are both in the realm of games where content comes from the playerbase interacting with itself. You're not building quests and hunting dungeons for them, at least you shouldnt be if you understand it. Its a harder sell to investors and frankly harder to do right.
Eve and PS2 are not a model for capturing the MMO market. Its a niche because you're playing to hardcore gamers who want to be closely interacting with your world. It's not a casual thing. That MEANS a smaller market, but also a more fanatic one.
Any marketing person can tell you this. You don't build something for your hardcore users and expect it to capture the broad market.
PS2 will sit in its niche and it will do well. It will stay there and make good money for a long time, I expect. It will never unseat casual MMOs and we shouldnt expect it to.

Someone somewhere is probably planning a WWII MMOFPS. There is WWIIonline and it was a good game for a while, but cornered rat just doesn't have the manpower or funds to make that a really great game.
I played it for a couple years and had fun with it but if someone could pull off a WWII game like PS2 is shaping up to be then that would be a huge hit.
A lot of people are still into WWII games and lets face it, The Nazi's will be the baddest bad guys for the next 100 years.
If someone could put together a WWII MMOFPS with the graphics of say Arma 2,the persistant world and battle size of PS2 and the strategic level of WWIIonline they would have a big winner IMO.

A long time ago a company called SOE made a game called Everquest. It was really innovative and cool, so other companies tried to copy it. One of these companies, Blizzard, released a game called World of Warcraft which completely stole Everquest's thunder.
Also, PS2 is trying to be a more mainstream game than its predecessor. This is part of what is causing every other thread on this site to be complaints that some feature is being changed from how it worked in the original Planetside.
The sort of thing that this thread is concerned about has happened before, and it has especially happened to SOE before. I don't think anybody really needs to worry about it for at least the next year or two, but if PS2 is successful somebody is going to want to steal a share of the money.

I happen to know from an ex-Blizzard employee that Titan is just an internal name for the CoD MMO. No doubt that will be met with scepticism but it's up to you if you choose to believe it or not. I for one am glad about this because I have no interest whatsoever in playing a CoD MMO and it will filter a lot of the less desirable types from PS2. I know not all CoD players are annoying but a lot of them are lets face it.
Bad news is PS2 will obviously suffer for it too. I can just imagine all the MMOFPS press coverage being on Titan once it's announced and PS2 will barely get a mention. I just hope the player base is large enough to see the full potential of PS2 realised.

I could see that. The Blizzard Activision merger was in 2009, and I don't think we heard about Titan or that it would be an MMOFPS until 2010. It would be a logical move by Activision since it would basically be merging their two biggest cash cows. Regardless, according to that leaked product timeline from 2010, Titan was tentatively scheduled for Q4 2013. I don't think we are going to have to worry about it until 2014 or 2015.

To OP. I dont think anyone really will try compete or have a product that will be able to compete. There are many examples of games that have tried to do large scale fps like Arma for instance. Its a niche style of game, for those with patience and love for long term tactics. But as you can see by numbers and sales, people love that fast passed hop style of shooter.
Too many developers have tried to jump to near by genres, like BioWare, and have just failed to deliver the same quality from what they have been known best for. Another example would be Bethesda and them making Brink.

I wouldn't worry about it.
If the rumors are true that the new Xbox is gonna have a 6670, then an MMOFPS might as well be a 64 player map.
MASSIVE!! for a console....
COD has been making the same game for 20 years, they don't know how to make an MMOFPS. Wish em luck.
Bungie I could see, but Halo is successful because of its arena feel and its single player. People still enjoy that and I think an MMOFPS would not always gather all the fan base. And again, the new consoles seem to be very sub-par performance wise, looking at rumors at least.
And then you also have speculation that Planetside will make it to PS4... in which case it wont matter that Bungie makes an MMOFPS. It would be a nice fanboi console war though
As for Blizzard, I don't see it happening. They tried to make a third person shooter, StarCraft : Ghost. It was cancelled... for whatever reasons. Making an MMOFPS would require so much investment I doubt they would undertake it. Also, the "rabid blizzard fanbase" that you speak of.... they love RTS and RPG's... not FPS. I know this because I am friends with people who instantly buy every blizzard game on launch day. They don't play shooters, or at least not to the degree we might.
If anything we would see an MMORPG(Guild Wars/Skyrim etc.) fighting for the spotlight.
Doing something so original and high-tech is going to leave the competition out in the dust. Unless they've been planning something for a while, its going to be very hard to compete.
Also... there's dust 541 on PS3 already. There really isn't a spotlight to steal, its a very unique thing.
People think WoW was famous cause of blizzard, but really it was just fast spread word of mouth. If planetside 2 becomes the new WoW, it's gonna stay the new WoW for a long long time.

Speaking as a gamer, I can think of a lot of really amazing potential MMOFPSs that i'd love to play.
I'd love to see an MMOFPS with twitch FPS gameplay similar to Unreal Tournament - I love that gameplay style and think it could be made into a very cool MMOFPS.
I'd be really surprised if they didn't announce Halo online soon, seems like a no brainer for the 720 (if they call it that).
I'm looking forward to playing Firefall and I think Defiance will be pretty cool with the TV show tie in too.
Now, would any of these steal Planetside 2's thunder? No way. We're not tourists or newcomers on MMOFPS mountain, this is our hill and we have been and will remain the kings of this hill.

You know a game is gonna be good when the creative director has such confidence that he hopes for competition to come out so he can play them too.

Amen. 9 years of watching maybe a hundred games list themselves as "mmofps" more than games list themselves as sandbox, and none of them being true. 8v8 and "massive chat rooms" are not massive multiplayer.

Hmm.. Line of Defence seems like Planetside 2, but with smaller maps but more open, with space. And over 23,000 people per server, thats alot, but how many will Planetside 2 have? I can't remember the exact number.

WOT apparently has he world record for the most people on 1 server, max 30 people per instance. I dont really see how the amount of people on a server is relevent. im sure soe could had 60 more maps on the one server and be all like "LOOK AT US GUYZZZ" but its meaningless unless they're on the same cont.

Its like saying. "Look at me! I have 5 million dollars. But my aunt has it."
Unless those server people can actually work up to each other and see each other and interact with each other, then that doesn't count as people being on the same server physically. Or something along those lines. I probably worded it wrong.

I had suggested in another thread that you guys convince SOE to let you hire a full additional team and also make a modern themed MMOFPS with the appropriate changes(large contiguous landmasses instead of islands, Blackhawks instead of Galaxies), which I thought would be a lot less work since half the work is just changing to modern theme appearances, and got shouted down as a fool. I'm sure that will happen now too, but I firmly believe there's room in the marketplace for both Planetside 2 and a modern theme shooter. If there is NOT, then, when someone does come out with a modern theme shooter, then either it or PS2 will die. And if there is, SOE being the first to bring a modern theme MMOFPS to market alongside PS2 could allow absolute domination of the market.

1. Modern MMOFPS is a slippery slope. Why? Because with a futuristic/alt setting you can create sides of conflict with no RL analog, however in a modern day MMOFPS you'll have to choose who's fighting who. Example: USA vs Russia. Who's gonna choose Russia on an American server? Or America vs Terrorism? Or Asia vs NATO? Plus all the stuff you have to go through to give more or less accurate display of the fighting sides. And moreover - what if a war actually breaks out between the said nations while the game is still alive? Black PR, to say the least.
2. There's no point for a company to create competition to itself. That's basically splitting the income.
3. TBH I'd rather see some pre-immortality SP planetside for it only takes script and a little redesign of the PS2 engine.
But that's a subject for another topic.
My thoughts on the actual matter is that Halo will never compete with planetside for it will never make it to PCs. CoD is born to be a match-based game so no danger from here either. BF - EA+MMO is a bad combination. The thing will only work if dice decides to separate from EA and dispose of all the acquired greed.
Blizzard is a different story, but blizzard has very low experience when it comes to 100% openworld designs. Though there is a high possibility that they will release an MMOFPS but it will still be a MOFPS, like GA and such.
I only see few PS competitors - D514 (it can really draw some audience that has both PC and PS3, despite it being a MOFPS) and if EA decides to make a CnC MMOFPS project, but yet again, EA did nothing good online since UO.

I can only imagine all the bunny hopping master chiefs in the thousands throwing grenades in all directions.
Bunny hopping never worked in reach, and 4 looks to be taking a lot from reach so I would assume the "bunny hopping" would not be a valid tactic with thousands of *spartans considering you can't jump that high anymore, and it would be just as vehicle based as planetside so the scorpion or wraith would easily stop any "bunny hoppers".

1. Who says modern theme has to also mean realistically themed combatants? That's only necessary in reality sims anyway. Just do something like Nod vs GDI from Command and Conquer. GI Joe vs Cobra, who cares.
2 You might disagree with me, but as I said, there is room in the marketplace for both, and there are plenty of future theme haters. Some overlap will occur, I am aware. Although the free 2 play model allows people to play both I think...

Couldn't agree more, I think the majority of MMOFPS that will eventually materialise will be primarily PVE based with a splash of PVP. I think PS2 will sit nicely as the king of 100% PVP MMOFPS.

Nice Higby. You guys have been doing this for 10 years now.
Do you think also that these franchises have dug themselves into their own technical holes with destructive environments as precedent? I would imagine that its not quite possible at this time to do large scale maps with thousands of players and have destructible environments. Or at least it will be a challenge for them as EA and blizzard have no MMOFPS experience.

Why hasn't there been a MMOFPS released since 2003? SOE is chump change on the overall gaming landscape. Why haven't bigger players invested in it?
EA is probably just now coming into their dream payment scheme:
$60 for the game, $50 for Premium/prepaid DLC plan, $XX dollars for buying unlock packs, and servers being rented and paid for by the community instead of EA providing MMO server systems and GMs...and ALL of that is within the 12 to 24 month support life of an individual game.

Wouldn't that just be Sony making its own competition? I think the majority of people are ok with both futuristic and modern themes, so it would just split a large chunk of the player base.

For a game that's free to play I think a lot of people would play both and spend a little bit on unlocks in both, but that aside, I do believe there are enough people who are not interested in future theme as to provide a good market for a modern shooter. Obviously I can't prove that there are a lot of people who have future theme hate but it is what I believe. And, I'm not saying future theme hate isn't stupid, it is of course.
As I said, if there's enough room in the market for another company to add a modern MMOFPS and survive with PS2, then there's enough for for SOE release both and both survive. Yes there would be overlap.

Star I will tell you why. Microsoft a few years ago did a study on the FPS space. Their determination was that FPS should be console oriented. It's just too simplistic gameplay to offer long term value add. My suggestion to SOE is hold off releasing this game until PS4 is released.
Did Microsoft base their study off COD/BF3 with mostly infantry and small vehicle warfare? Or did they base it off something that arguably resembles real military warfare on a grand scale with vehicles, infantry, aircraft and a battlefield that stretches for hundreds of their pathetically small maps?
I, for one, HATE HATE HATE FPSes on consoles. I want to aim with my mouse, and not a joystick. If I want to aim my weapon, I don't want to have to counter aim because I went too far, or anything.
That, and I have little faith in Microsoft... their games usually suck unless it's on console, and even then they just distribute it... so I feel some bias coming from them.
Just because the $@%!ed up a halo port to the computer, doesn't mean there's no money in it... it just means they suck at it and are trying to cover their tracks.
I will also raise you the fact that people are still playing Planetside after A DECADE, which is 10 years, even without graphical upgrades or 'revolutionary' gameplay additions/changes in 5 years. No money in it? I laugh in their general direction, and in your general direction to a lesser extent for putting value in their 'findings'.

Could you imagine the brand loyalty that a Star Wars MMOFPS with space combat would instantly inspire?
That could work, but implementing jedi would be difficult in a FPS. I have been burned on way too many star wars games, especially the MMOs.
Now if any of you ever played Mount & Blade: Warband, then that could be a route. The game is already medieval FPS mechanics, so you just branch it out to huge servers. You could do it historical like M&B with several factions-
-Asians
-Europeans
-Nordic
-Eastern
-Middle East
Setup where you control land and build fortresses on control points. Assaulting troops could build siege works. Have large open areas that can only have small field works for open battles.

The biggest threat to PlanetSide 2 is PlanetSide 2.
For me PlanetSide was and remains the best game ever made. What destroyed it wasn't WoW or Halo or EVE or any outside party; it was PS's own development team that lost sight of the vision and butchered the game.
While fears of pay-to-win have subsided, they still linger as latent fears among many that I talk to. There's that fear that one day when the game is successful, they'll go and screw it up. They'll get greedy or think they can slide on something and it'll cascade into something that ruins the game. BFRs, Pay-to-Win, becoming a session shooter or attempting to carve PS2 into an ESport - these are all things that I see that loom as the harbingers of doom for PlanetSide 2. And its easy to see how any of them could slip in either because they think it might be cool or they see it as an opportunity to expand the business or appeal to more customers.
All we can do is wait and hope that they stay true to the essence of PlanetSide, don't over-reach, and keep the core gameplay principles in mind at all times when making changes.

Im glad that SOE decided to make Planetside 2 and start the revolution again.....
Back in 2003 when I was in middle School, I thought all modern games today were gonna be like Planetside...Huge wars with 1000's of people playing it, some would've of been WW2 MMO FPS while others would be fast twitch shooters. Sadly that never became true.
So Im really glad you guys are making Planetside 2 even if one day u guys lose the MMOFPS mountain which I hope never....and if it does happen, it will probably be way later when u guys start doing planetside 3:D
I hope you guys get competition soon because we all benifit as gamers and I hope you are right that halo MMOFPS is coming.

Is it in Alpha? Because otherwise that would be kind of lame to say it had better animations.
Better graphics? It looked pretty good but I'm not convinced on that based on the trailer.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that due to it being in Alpha, the ragdoll stuff isn't in the game yet...I know it's using the physx engine, though my knowledge regarding that kind of stuff is relatively limited.

some posted about warface being competition for PS2.
I have been in the warface beta (russian version) for a long time now
The game is small.. small maps and built like cod.
Big problem with spawns in the game.. the spawn do not change at al so all games besides search & destroy type end up 1 side being spawn trapped as players quickly figured out where the side spawed at every single time.
you literally shoot a guy dead and he will respawn within 3 feet of that area again in 5 secs.
It's not a horrible game or anything .. but it's nothing like planetside and is def not on PS2's level or even close.
I made a youtube video about it on my channel a long time ago now.. Check it out if you want.
