This is a pet peeve of mine, but it is also very important as far as immersion and believably go. I think there should absolutely be renderings of your characters hands/arms driving/steering any vehicles in the game. I would say it is higher in my priorities than entrance/exiting vehicle animations are, and those are one of the biggest things I'm missing from PS1 thus far.
It is extremely lacking when you see a steering wheel turn itself or an empty cockpit in a plane. It gives it a floating feeling with less impact when you don't have something to ground you in the scenery. So far I haven't seen any footage to show they are planning on implementing this in PS2, but I am praying that it is on a list somewhere.
Is this important to others, or just myself? :D
Edit: Oh and I just want to emphasize, if PS2 is indeed going to enforce first person in vehicles I think that makes this all the more important.
Not really important, but it's always nice.
Probably not terribly hard to put in, either. Doubt we'll see it in.

It's probably not insanely difficult to put in. I hope we see it.

Its not a deal-breaker for me, but I do like it when you can see "your" hands on the steering wheel of vehicles.
Cheers,

I do hope as well this will be in soon, like in Far Cry 2, I always found myself looking at my characters legs while i was driving and noticing that i never changed gears or moved my feet, they must have been the fancy vehicles with the throttle and brake on the steering wheel and gear shifts there as well.
Maybe.. just maybe... These Planetside 2 vehicles work on mind powers

Nobody brings a hot rod to a car show without first polishing it up to a nice shiny buffed finish.
I certainly hope they shine it up by adding in some nice final polish touches. I certainly agree that hands on the wheels, feet on pedals, arms on cockpit controls, etc are all things are not necessary, but they set apart average from excellent developers.

I agree 100 % that this should be in. I hate ghost steering.

Though it would be absolutely amazing to have, I wouldn't care either way. If I can take FSX's empty cockpits after this many years, I can take invisible appendages.

Great point and something that was nagging me a bit as well watching these demo vids.

I will ONLY support this if the hands TURN with the wheel. Nothing is worse than set hands when the wheel spins. Worse than no hands.
I'm not really sure how big of an issue this is going to be. From the footage of the sunderer ui, only a sliver of the top of the steering wheel was visible. It wasn't even possible to see where the drivers hands would have been. In modern military aircraft, the stick is between the pilot's legs or low and to his side specifically because it shouldn't be visible and blocking his field of view or view of the instruments. It is perfectly realistic for the aircraft in PS2 to not have visible sticks. The tanks don't need this because you never see their interior. That leaves the Flash. I don't think we have seen anybody drive a flash, but I don't see how it would be possible to make a decent UI without having the driver's hands on the handlebars.
I think the Flash very clearly needs it, and the only other vehicle where it needs to be considered is the Sunderer. It seems to me that the Sunderer UI was designed specifically to avoid this problem.

Who says they use steering wheels?

Hahahah, so true.
To echo the thoughts of the rest, probably not spectacularly difficult to do, but I'm not going to have a hissy fit if they aren't there at launch.
on this note it really adds to the emergence when you can look down and see a pair of legs as you stand or run, as BF3 did.
Is a nice to have.

I feel like saying "Because we are wearing helmets and armor, our characters can't look down that far."
But i feel like i will get proven wrong somehow.

Wasnt this feature in PS1? I can remember driving ANTs and having nothing better to do than to watch my hands on the steering wheel. Or maybe I'm remembering false memories.
Oh god, please help me! What else have I falsely remembered!?

I'm pretty sure that some vehicles in PS1 had animated hands on steering wheels.
Would love to see this again.
