I hadn't seen this topic mentioned apart from a brief discussion T-ray and Higby had around GDC time. It says in the pcgamer link that PS2 will not be on steam. Any verification of that available?

Does it matter if it's not on Steam?

Yes, it matters. Steam provides a HUGE audience of users, and just by a game being listed in Steam's free-to-play section, coming up on promotion splash screens, etc, within the Steam client, a ton of impulse buys generate revenue. For a game like this to NOT be on Steam would be a tragic missed opportunity to be exposed to millions of users who may not otherwise be aware of the product at all.

Steam is a massive advertising service.
Also the overlay UI allows me to shoot and fap at the same time

It would be a huge mistake not too.

I don't see how SOE can't as Star Trek Online has and it has it's own dedicated client still that just loads up from STEAM. It's a free advertising and distribution network on a huge scale.

All I know is, I want a pre-order bonus of PS2-themed loot for TF2. :p

Same here... having all my games managed in one place is very convenient, and so is the overlay.

Sadly, every company wants to make their own version of steam, which eventually will end the "One Client to manage them all and in your hard drive bind them" thing i love so much.

Steam would be the best place to put it, 4 million gamers logged in concurrently can't be wrong and it would reach more people than totalbiscuit or E3 combined.

If SOE is willing to market the game and advertise it then it isn't that big of a deal.

I'm fairly certain it's not entirely free.

Its also full of FPS gamers, as steam has some of the all time greatest FPS games. ( Your personal opinion of each not withstanding )

It matters some what but Planetside 2 can still be successful.

Just look at League of Legends, is really succesfull without valve.

World of Tanks does fine and that's not on Steam.

Yes, the point is not that it can't do well without Steam... it's that it can do better with it.

I like how so many people think if SOE put PS2 on Steam, it would be "free advertising" . I guarantee you, it would not be free... How do you think Valve makes money? I'm also pretty sure SOE knows full and well about Steam and its potential.

it would certainly help me trying to convince my tf2 friends to join my outfit if it was in a medium they were already comfortable with.

I can try to explain the awesomness the first one had, but i cant fathom the words to properly do so. Advertising on steam has to be ONE of the best forms of advertising a PC game.

Regardless ill run it through steam as a non-steam game.

I believe Valve would want a cut of sales made through the Steam client (i.e. cosmetic items, XP boosts, etc) and SOE probably will try to avoid that by using Launchpad or something else instead.

That's the secret to success... where all the steam clones have failed and this is why....

I think PS2 on steam would be great, but they would probably need to cut a deal with valve that they like.

Although from what i hear in developer interviews, valve is very easy to work with and generous. I'm sure its easy to do and would help more players find out. I know lots of people who use steam as a primary download service. My buddy didn't even know the new COD was out until he saw it on steam, and that's like one of the biggest games.

As someone already mentioned Everquest 2 is already on Steam and uses microtransactions that can use the steam store to purchase stationcash I believe. Valve doesn't really lock down the microtransaction system. They just have tools for companies that don't want to develop the software.

I personally would prefer using steam. Really SOE has nothing to lose. They wouldn't even have to manage their own download servers and steam handles patching. (Though last I checked they have pricing systems for updates, but all I've heard has been for indie games. The information for large developers is classified I'd imagine). It really does simplify things especially since Planetside 2 requires an active Internet connection to play anyway.

Hopefully it'll come to Steam, it's a much better program than SOE's launchpad. However if you have to use SOE's launchpad then it'll be completely pointless, however it does need to support Steam's external add game feature which allows me to launch through Steam. I love talking to my friends when playing and it showing them what I'm playing so it makes them go out and buy the game.
