View Full Version : Voice macro is suposed to be "V" Not "B".

Don't mess with tradition. "V" Is iconic to the series. Users are fine to rebind it if they want. But this is Planetside, it needs to be "V". Tradition. Every tribes game and Planetside since 1998. This is an iconic feature of all Tribes games. Its a simple request.

I'm sure it is. Even more reason to set it back by default.
Tradition. Every tribes game and Planetside since 1998.
I'm not going to relearn "BBB" as "VVV". Respect your elders SOE. Highrez studios knows this.

Do not see Auto-run which was Q in the original game.
They changed the use key to E which was G in the original.
Every game I've played since planetside that had a "USE" function, I've rebound to G. I'll be doing it again here. Then again I always have to rebind just about everything because I use ESDF.

I am aware. That does not mean you guys are not breaking with an iconic feature, and a long standing tradition in the series. I admit, this was partly made in jest, but it IS important due to heritage. 6 games in the main series ( 2 modern ), one in the Planetside off shoot.

Why dont you take your own advice? Planetside was based on a multiplayer tank game called Tarnarus back in 1997, made by Verant and published by SOE.

So let's make this more about general keybinding than just the voice chat. What would your key binds be if you study this chart?
http://www.planetside-universe.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=559&d=1338963991
Current setup:
INFANTRY
[1] / [2] / [3] - Primary Weapon / Secondary Weapon / Item
[W] [Up] / [S] [Down] - Move Forwards / Move Backwards
[A] [Left] / [D] [Right] - Strafe Left / Strafe Right
[F] - Melee Attack
[G] - Use Grenade
[Q] - Spot Player
[E] - Interact
[R] - Reload
[T] - Use Ability
[C] - Crouch Toggle
[V] - Switch Firegroup
[SHIFT] - Sprint
[CTRL] - Crouch
[SPACE] - Jump
VEHICLES
[W] [Up] / [S] [Down] - Move Forwards / Move Backwards
[A] [Left] / [D] [Right] - Strafe Left / Strafe Right
[Q] - Spot Player
[R] - Reload
[T] - Change Camera
[CTRL] - Move Down
[SPACE] - Move Up
[+] - Throttle Up
[-] - Throttle Down
GENERAL
[ENTER] - Start Chat Text
[ALT] + [F] - Toggle Performance
[PRT SCR] - Screenshot
[TAB] - Toggle Mouse
[Y] - GAQ Accept
[N] - GAQ Decline
[F12] - GAQ Show
[M] - Open Map
[Key Pad 4] - Voice Chat Global
[Key Pad 7] - Voice Chat Empire
[Key Pad 8] - Voice Chat Echo
[Key Pad 9] - Voice Chat Squad
[Z] - Voice Chat Outfit
[B] - Voice Macro
[CTRL] + [F10] - Toggle UI
However, I'm missing the mouse and a couple other things.
[Left Mouse] - Fire (Left Hand) Weapon
[Right Mouse] - Fire Right Hand Weapon? or Alternate Fire?
[Mouse Scroll Up / Down] - Zoom In/Out? or Cycle Weapons? or Cycle Weapon Mode?
I'd personally change/add the following:
[3] Grenade (select)
[4] Melee Weapon (select)
[5] Items (select)
[G] - Interact (habit)
[B] - Use Ability (habit)
[V] - Voice Macro (habit)
[Q] - Auto-Run (habit)
[T] - Spot Player (Target - WoT habit)
[Z] / [X] - Zoom In / Out
[E] - Move Up (Single Tab: Stop Descending or Short Elevation / Double Tap: Elevate Lock / Triple Tap: Faster Elevation Lock)
[C] - Move Down (Single Tap: Stop Elevating or Short Descent / Double Tap: Descent Lock / Triple Tap: Faster Descent Lock)
[F] [Middle Mouse Button] - Voice Chat Outfit
[F5] - Voice Chat Squad (Most used next to outfit)
[F6] - Voice Chat Empire
[F7] - Voice Chat Echo ?
[F8] - Voice Chat Global (Is this local or to all players?)
Melee Attack sounds like quick knife attack, but I'd want to time it by selecting it and simply holding it out instead of not being able to strafe while stabbing (if that's how it works). Similarly, instead of "Use Grenade", I'd want to select the grenade, then aim and time it.
PS: What's a GAQ btw? http://www.acronymgeek.com/GAQ

It seems a silly thing to make an issue, much less a thread out of, but I do somewhat agree. V is better and it's traditional, for Planetside if nothing else.
Personally, I think X would make a better keybind for "Switch Firegroup," as it's a command that you need to have easily accessible but not as quick or as often as VVV.
Also as has been mentioned, while you can rebind it, it would make confusion when refering to the commands between players. And what about quick commands? Would the fastest be BBB, and become VBB when switched?
Not really that big a deal, but hopefully we can get it changed in beta regardless. I mean in veta.

"Don't mess with tradition" isn't a request. You are abrasive and it doesn't help your cause.
You could have explained the argument more thoroughly in the first post, instead of going back and forth with everyone throughout the thread.
Key rebinding pretty well trashes you original post. Tradition means fuck all when you can change it back. The only reason I agree with the idea is because of the confusion it may cause among old and new Planetside players.
V = Switch Fire Group. Does that mean changing the rate of fire from single shot to semi or auto? (V did that in BF3 for some weapons....)
I'm guessing so. Change it to X though, it's a perfectly acceptable key for something like that. BF players can rebind it to V if they really want.

I guess I can see how a tong in cheek post may be taken aggressively. But I think the larger issues is that some here seem to think any post that is not praise is a whine.
Still stands though. "V" Is iconic to the series. Users are fine to rebind it if they want. But this is Planetside, it needs to be "V".

It at least seems like the wrong time for this topic I think. Bigger fish to fry once beta starts, then maybe we can have some community threads discussing the matter as things settle down a bit.
I don't think it necessarily needs to be locked, but I would let it die.
At least I'm not going to post anymore in it. I think all that can be said has been said for now.

I think it's worth pointing out that changing the starter voice macro button doesn't change the rest. In Planetside 1, if you were to change the voice macro button to "B", you would have to press "BVV" to say 'help'. If they allow you to further change the voice macro bindings to the point where you could change each category of macros, that would be a different story.
I agree with keeping V as the default button, but perhaps there is another button that is currently V?

Screw tradition.
...but mr blood has a point. The second most important part of keybinding (right after "can I reach the key" is "can I find it naturally" and this setup seems to fail that test.
What does the B stand for? Boice? Boisterous? Be-Annoying?
V stands for Voice, it sits in the right place and made sense to me so I could find it and learn it.
Why change what works?

Ah yeah, because WASD and q and f and z all stand for something.
fact is you can change it to whatever you want. bind it to the capslock key if it tickles your testicles.
You know this game is gonna be boss when people are getting pissy about a bindable key being located one over from the original. So stoked!

The hate is strong in this thread.
Maybe I'm the odd man out, but I really agree with the OP. Though I know it is rebindable, the Tribes and Planetside tradition is that voice chat is V. I'm not sure why they decided to change it, maybe to avoid similarities between the newest Tribes game, but that's just silly since both Planetside and Tribes were made by some of the same people.
I loved the V chat, not just because it was logical (as said earlier, "V = Voice"), but it is also closer to the main hand position.
There have also been mentions of how 'use' has been changed from G to E, and switching fire modes from X to V. I think they should stick with as many good things from the first game as they can, and the default key positioning was one of those good things.
I know it seems very trivial at first glance, especially considering you can rebind them anyways. But that's kind of the point, really. They should make the default mostly similar to the first game, and if people don't like it, they can just rebind it themselves. Those of us who were loyal to the first game and learned the keys won't have to fumble around trying to remember all the keys from the first ones until it feels just right.
