View Full Version : Don't bother with the Twitter key giveaways

Seriously, either you have to be creative and appeal to the PS2 twitter person or you have to have some kind of auto fill bot.
The beta keys that I copy-pasted into the beta key/promo field were gone within 5 seconds of the tweet.

Definitely don't bother with the keys they are giving out. They are posting them as text so the bots will use them in an instant. My friend managed to snag a key from facebook yesterday, and it was only because people complained and they finally posted a batch as an image.
You can still tweet them stuff to try and get one that way though.

Dont give up lads, it tooks me 2 days and about 100 tweets to get the lucky notice + a TR Fan art of a light assault. And when they choose you they send you a private message with da key.
I do agree in the fact that there is a bit of luck involved though.

Uh, beta/alpha "basically is" a way for developers to test their ideas, designs, and mechanics outside of their contained environment and with the gamers themselves.
I personally enjoy testing games. Being able to play games I enjoy earlier then release is a bonus.

I agree it's unfair and the keys go stupidly fast go stupidly fast.
I personally hate that companies do Beta key giveaways on social networking sites since it's complete luck and there isn't a particularly good chance of those who get the keys actually testing the game. If people who do get these keys play, they see it more or less as an early demo rather than to actually test the mechanics and to balance what needs to be balanced.

I wouldn't bother with the FB codes, since they're always gotten the instant they're posted. Your chances are much higher by making up something clever for Twitter. However, the amount of things I did before getting one was ridiculous. I made a robot in photoshop, remade the PS1 logo in 3ds max, then posted an image of my cat and a variety of funny gifs. Only until I mentioned I was sad about Mr. Trololo did I manage to get one.

What do you mean by "vets?" PS1 Vets? http://www.planetside-universe.com/showthread.php?t=39024
PS1 players, Fan Faire 2011 attendees and PC Gamer keys will have first access to beta once it begins.
No restrictions there. if you are/were a PlanetSide player you get a beta invite, be sure your station acct email is accurate
I wanted to drop in and clarify Beta access for former PlanetSide 1 players. As stated players will receive priority access. This means they will receive access early in the Beta process. This does not mean every former PlanetSide 1 player will get in before anyone else. All we can do is ensure those folks will get in before most others.

Right, I understand vets (who are/were subscribers) will get priority access...
What about reserves players? I played through a couple of programs and received a free 45 day subscription on top of it(Came out of nowhere).
If I can get that answered by one of the PS devs, that would amazing, Even better, if the answer is that I am flagged as priority then that means I can stop beta key hunting.

When you say "all" does that include keys for people who applied through the official beta sign-up? I ask because I am a non vet who applied a while ago to be part of this beta through the official sign-up. Like most I have tried (Alot) on FB and Twitter but to no avail, so I am asking, are you still going to e-mail keys to applicants who officially 'signed-up'?

I'm trusting them that my status as a vet with PS1 subbed on my account will get me in so I never bothered with key hunting.
Anyways they can't have just PS1 vets and fans in the beta even though it seems "fair" it's not logical. If they are trying to take Planetside and bring it up to date with shooters for today they need that audience's feedback to know if they are doing it right. A beta of all PS1 players would mostly just want the game to change into an updated PS1. Obviously a blanket statement but I'm including myself and it's true lol.
They need feedback from both the players on the fence that might be interested and the already converted.

I don't understand the logic. Being PS1 vets should rule us out of Twitter-given keys. Twitter-keys should target newcomers to the genre, SOE needs all kind of population for feedback
And on Twitter, they are handing keys to people showing they are true fans/followers of original PS1 (ie, vets...). They won't have much newcomers in beta, this way
had they done this the other way around : handle keys to vets first, at 1st E3 day, then doing their twitter giveaway, they'd have less vets spamming for keys on twitter, and more newcomers getting them
Lorgarn
2012-06-07, 05:50 AM
I personally love this way of marketing, it spreads the keys out to a wider audience than it would giving them to a fansite or similar.
What I do hate though is my complete lack of wittyness if you will, I have never managed to gather someones attention. Some just have it in them I guess.
Talented Maori
2012-06-07, 06:15 AM
I can definately see the benefit in the advertising, I simply want to know if the application filled out before the keys were handed out still counts. I am not really a gambling man and I want this game to succeed considering PS1 lasted almost 10years, so information from New Zealand, which is very far away from the servers would prove beneficial in stress testing the netcode, which is what a beta is for. I can also see the vets point of view, of which I am not, in stress testing the actual mechanics of the game, of which they know how to play, if a button is broken, they'll probably find it first. These things will make the final product a DREAM to play. However, I also realise the devs are busy busy busy, so I'll exercise patience and wait also, some good points in this thread.

Sigh, July PC Gamer is out of stock, so I guess it leaves twitter for me. Or PS1 sub, but I don't feel like paying 15$ for early beta access.
The problem with twitter is that it doesn't only require wit, but also a lot of luck. I bet they're spammed by hundreds of people per minute during giveaway. There is a chance to get a key and that's it - a chance.
Also I can't stand people posting old fanart, that wasn't made by them, and getting a key. I guess that's what I get for playing fair and posting pics actually made by myself.

I don't understand why they are doing this at all. The whole meaning of a beta is that you will let your game be tested, and try to make it work as you want, BEFORE ADVERTISING. You shouldn't advertise for products that aren't finished, that is just stupid.
And they also said PS1 players would get priority acces. I'm not sure if you can call if priority, when you are giving hundreds of keys away via facebook (which were for the biggest part farmed by scripts, and will most likely appear on ebay soon) and twitter (which you can only get if you spam a few hundred tweets at the planetside account.)
And the people that signed up for beta testing weeks ago, who probably all want to help testing, get nothing.

I think it's become painfully obvious there are bots farming the keys. They had the right idea on Facebook to put the keys into an image format to stop the bots, but I think the damage has already been done at this point. It would be a safe bet to say that when those accounts are accepted, you will see them go up for sale.
A shame, but there are other ways to get keys thankfully. So there isn't much reason to be upset, it would just be nice if those keys were going to legitimate fans instead of being farmed.

What I don't understand is that I've entered two keys that seemed to have worked (they didn't display any type of warning message or anything) but in my profile it says the account is still inactive. An accepted key gives a congratulation page. You can't miss it:
http://i.imgur.com/wAQkn.png
Getting kicked back to the account page is some kind of timeout, separate from the one that logs you off with a countdown. I found that you won't suffer it if you refresh the key submission page once in a while.
I think it's become painfully obvious there are bots farming the keys. How is that obvious?
I don't understand these comments I'm seeing from people saying, ‘I copy-pasted in two seconds and it was already used! Impossible! Damn bots!’ It implies that there's no way that even one person out of thousands could have been even half a millisecond faster, just because they were so impressed with themselves. That's an ego-shield fit for nuclear war.
I hope that this is not indicative of how quick people will be with accusations of cheating in the game itself. Then again, they're exactly that quick in most FPSs.
They had the right idea on Facebook to put the keys into an image format I agree that doing that was preferable, if only to eliminate that one suspicion from the butt-hurt thousands. Well, most of them. I still did see things like, ‘No one could type that fast! The bots have evolved!’
Getting a key in unused was just as contentious from the very beginning. Unless the alleged scripters had an insider in SOE to let them know there would be a key dump on Twitter, I can't see how the idea holds up.

Are you serious? If you are a PS1 player, you are getting priority. Stop freaking out about people who are entering keys that says "Priority Tester," because they haven't flagged our damn accounts yet for beta. They are going too. All you are doing is spreading panic among the morons who can't read what the dev's post. Chill the hell out.

I don't understand why they are doing this at all. The whole meaning of a beta is that you will let your game be tested, and try to make it work as you want, BEFORE ADVERTISING. You shouldn't advertise for products that aren't finished, that is just stupid.

This Beta key promotion got PlanetSide 2 in front of over a million people and wasn't geared for former PS1 players in any way. A few thousand additional people is not going to get vets in any more quickly. Realistically come Beta folks will have moved on to a brand new concern but for now we are trying to get PS2 heard about in every corner of the world.

What sounded like a cool idea, beta kive away on FB and Twitter, now leaves a bitte taste, the picture and 10-15 release at once where a lot better, then single one, refreshing all the time.

Oh they sure get in as first, I just want to point out it is not really priority since A LOT of people get in. They get in as first, but not earlier than hundreds of people who didn't play PS1 -> I don't call that priority.
And how you know there are bots? Because it is possible. It is so easy to write a simple programm that copy-pastes so much faster than humans could ever do. This is the internet, this things just happen, always, you make it very easy to sort of 'cheat' and this, then then there will be cheated.
But I do not believe there were bots for the images. Tweeting the keys in a picture would solve it I think.

Writing a program to copy and paste data into a field is a trivial matter and isn't something that takes days to complete. It's something quite easily doable and feasible in a situation like this. Especially when you consider how we've seen next to nobody claiming to win the random text Twitter beta keys. Plenty of people have won them through direct messages, but it's an extreme rarity to here anyone winning one from the random text posts.
The images with the beta keys on them were producing many more claimed winners from what I've gathered.
I hope that this is not indicative of how quick people will be with accusations of cheating in the game itself. Then again, they're exactly that quick in most FPSs.
The jump from a simple copy and paste script to a full on aimbot is a major change in subjects and not even applicable in this situation. One of these is an almost guaranteed chance to beta test the game with no repercussions for doing so, while the other is violating the EULA and placing a massive risk in losing your account. One of these is not easily detected, the other has many avenues to be detected. Sorry, but those subjects do not equivocate and has nothing to do with the point being made by several people in this thread.
I agree that doing that was preferable, if only to eliminate that one suspicion from the butt-hurt thousands. Well, most of them. I still did see things like, ‘No one could type that fast! The bots have evolved!’
Now people claiming that are completely out of touch and clueless. Writing a script to gather data from an image takes the same amount of finesse as breaking captchas, which is not as easily done. :P

Listen, we know there is a closed beta coming. What we don't know is the phases in which you will be allowed to test within this closed beta. I have a VERY strong feeling that the veterans will be the first ones in, and we'll be testing for a week or two before they open access to a second and third wave of testers. The people who are winning the random keys on FB/Twitter may only get access for the last week of closed beta, while the vets will get to play for the entirety of closed beta.
I haven't gotten any of the keys on FB/Twitter, but I know this PS2 team will treat the veterans right. They have listened to a lot of our feedback and they know we will be the most helpful when it comes to expressing issues with the game. We know what PS1 was and we know what makes a persistent MMOFPS work. So, do not fret my veteran brothers. We will see the light soon.

Remember, "having a beta key" and "being admitted into beta" are two separate things. The beta keys are useless until SOE flags them for access, obviously, because no one has been admitted to beta yet. They could very, very easily send out emails to all current PS1 subscribers that contain active beta keys and get them into the beta immediately - then in a few days, they hit the button for all the keys generated for the facebook giveaways, magazines, and planetside2.com signups - or something like that. That's how I'm imagining it.
Compare it to an iTunes giftcard. Yeah, you can have as many codes as you want, but they're useless until you take them to the front and the cashier activates them. We simply don't know anything about how the beta admission process will work - patience and faith, comrades.

I think part of the random giveaway though is, as said, the advertising. Most folks on here will be (at very least) trying the game asap. They need a LOT more people interested.
Remember? - that was one of the faults of the first one: It wasn't advertised/pushed much. (It also needed broadband when they it was rare and a pretty ninja pc too, but I digress.) If they got a lot of folks interested in this it's only going to be a good thing. If the games making them good money it will be developed and worked on more.
Pretty sure most here are vets - these keys are to randoms but no-one's actually playing yet....

The Station account w/ the PS1 payment history will be given veteran status and will be in the very first round of beta alongside the PCGamer Keys. The Keys from twitter & Facebook get into beta shortly after. You can doublecheck to see that account has priority by logging in, clicking your name in the top right, then clicking membership info. If you see Planetside2 account active then you can give a friend the twitter key.

So you are given Veteran status as long as Planetside 1 shows up in your account info? Still not sure about what makes someone a "Veteran" or if there's a place I can check.
Edit: I asked on Twitter and Beta Key Bill said "If you played PS1 and have the same station account [BKB]". So apparently you just need PS1 linked to your account regardless of how long you played.

Yup. I have to call bots. Unless there are simply THAT many people trying to enter codes (which I really hope is the case, and possible)
I have to doubt the bots claim, because I got one of the scrambled public ones myself a couple days ago (after a day or two of trying). I didn't mention it until yesterday because I was concerned someone might try to hack my station account, but considering that the vast majority of people here appear to be PS1 players, and many others are acquiring PC Gamer keys, anyone with a twitter key is probably far lower priority if anyone was actually going to try to hack accounts.
I had the day off, and I had tweet deck open with an account I created for a friend (Already have 2 vet accounts signed up).. Copy and pasta'd probably 30 or so codes @ under 5 seconds from tweet.
No luck.
5 seconds is too slow.
Hackers with bots claim all your keys sadly ... it seams all the beta keys are gone whithin 3 seconde or less !
I think you guys should post all the beta keys in a ((Picture format ))
I'll also note that I didn't use any scripts or bots. I had Seesmic Desktop 2 open (seemed more effective than TweetDeck) on one monitor, and on another monitor I had the key entry page open (and had to keep stopping it from logging me out, or log back in if it did). When one of the PS2 staff posted a 5-part scrambled tweet, I started typing it into the key entry box (not trying to copy and paste it). For the one I won, I started with the first section, and while typing it, found the next section, then while typing that one, found the next section, etc, since it is not difficult to keep something in memory and do something with it while also doing something else and not looking at it. It wasn't until I took that approach that I was able to do it fast enough to get one of the keys. (Prior to that I had been typing, looking for the next section, typing, looking for the next section, and not getting them)
For the split-in-two-posts ones I was copying and pasting, and was always too slow on those, despite using mouse-select, ctrl-c, alt-tab, ctrl-v, enter.
I expect there were a ridiculous number of people trying to get the codes, so it doesn't surprise me that it took me over a day to get one, and that I had to keep improving how fast I was until I got one (and that I had to use an external twitter program to receive the tweets, but I was doing that from the beginning because I knew twitter itself would be too delayed).
I think it's become painfully obvious there are bots farming the keys. They had the right idea on Facebook to put the keys into an image format to stop the bots, but I think the damage has already been done at this point. It would be a safe bet to say that when those accounts are accepted, you will see them go up for sale.
There were a ridiculous number of people trying to get these keys. Now, I don't know if the numbers have gone up or down in recent days - I have no way to know, really. I'm sure SoE could probably tell if they wanted to (just set up the key entry server-side script to track how many people try and fail to get a key within 60 seconds or so).
You would still have to descramble the keys (only slightly more effort, still) or assemble multiple tweets. Personally, I didn't write a program to harvest keys, because it wouldn't have been fair to anyone else trying to get a key.
Finally, I think you overestimate the chances of people saying "I won!" and underestimate the chances of them being paranoid about being hacked and losing their station account.

They are giving away keys via tweets right now and not DMs.
Which is a stupid, ineffective way to get those keys into the hands of real-life people/loyal fans.
As you know first hand how quickly those bots gobble up keys and then sell them for upwards of $50.
The frenzy only lends itself to the spammers being seen.
Worse still, Valk and others aren't consistent with their awarding of keys.
They say fan art, and award some but not all, quality clearly not being what they're looking at, which only leads me to my next point:
I find if you kiss Valk's ass or appeal to the beta-key-person-of-the-day's ego or factional bias, you're more likely to get a key.
I posted VS fanart several times and was constantly ignored while people who draw bullshit in paint about TR killing VS, something like "I wasted my life" or w/e get the key. (Admittedly, I laughed at it, but it took the guy 30 seconds?)
Or someone I never saw in my 6 days of lurking/posting says, "I need a reason to stop playing BF3! and then Valk replies to them with a key.
So rule of thumb from a twitter vet?
1) Appeal to their factional bias;
2) Kiss their ass;
3) Make stupid comments or inane tweets while doing 1 and 2;
4) Profit from a key!
And as a side note; you're free to disagree with me, you're free to dislike what I say, but after 6 days of trying for a key for 3-4 hours every evening after work, this is the information/feeling that I have gotten for myself, first hand. I don't mean my observations to be an insult to any of the SOE staff, I do know they are swamped, but it is what it is.

I managed to snare one from TRay on twitter when he was giving up on the NC that hadnt sent him a DM when he called them out from his follower list.
I told him a zillion NC had sent him a msg for a key and the ones he was listing arent loyal to the cause.
Next thing, my nick was called out :groovy:
That key went to a mate of mine that missed out on playing PS1 with us but is very keen to get in on PS2 after seeing all the stuff thats been released so far.

I've never looked at twitter and I don't live in the Northern Hemisphere. Methinks the odds of getting a key are stacked against me. 8/

It's a variety of people on at different times, and generally more than one at once, although I have seen nobody on at all for a number of hours during the wee hours of the morning EST. (And I've not paid any attention since I got my key, so I do not know if it has changed since then, and if it has, this may be less helpful)

I got a public Twitter key a couple of days ago.
If you are trying to get a public key by spam refreshing the Twitter site, you can stop right now. The website is 30-40 seconds late with tweets posted.
