View Full Version : VS ammo, should it be a universal ammo?

Since they run on energy and since the VS are scientists and engineers, what if all the guns, every single one of them, ran on the same type of ammo? Pistol, carbine, and plasma launcher? Possibly even the MAX/vehicles too? Obviously one "plasma magazine" would give different amounts of shots per weapon with different damages and effectiveness, but it'll allow for a unique flavor for the VS that they don't truly run out of ammo until they are absolutely completely out of ammo. Obviously switching weapons is faster than reloading still, so there's still use for pistols and such. What do you think?

That is... Seriously clever. But what would be the point of VS LAs if you run around looting dead bodies for ammo.(Besides, imagine someone getting revived and finding out that they have no ammo. Someone is about to get pissed.)

It's a nice idea but I think for the sake of balance it shouldn't be implemented. If it were then the other empires would be at a disadvantage (not really a bad thing IMO ;) ) and this would lead to lots of angry TR and NC crying "NERF!"

You can't loot bodies for ammo in PS2. And remember, you can always opt out of being revived, if I recall correctly, kind of like PS1. So no worries about respawning with 0 ammo.

If necessary, give the NC back their OP quad-shot jackhammer and the TR their OP.... uh... just give the TR an automatic grenade launcher. :groovy:

Like the idea but it would probably be imba.

Besides they could probably explain why they don't share in the lore easily. For example a beamer mag wouldn't work in a Pulsar because it doesn't provide enough energy to fire the weapon while a pulsar mag would burn out a beamer because it is too powerful.

I guess we'll have to reserve judgement till beta as always then we make suggestions like these. :)

Oops, edited because I misunderstood OP's intent.

Not a bad idea. Would be most beneficial to HA I guess, as they could use their common ammo pool to fire more AV launcher shots if they needed to. For all other classes it would really just mean they could use their rifle a little more before having to rely on the beamer.

In PS1 they did something kind of like this, in that VS weapons could use their energy cells for both anti-infantry and anti-armor fire. NC and TR had to carry two types of ammo in order to do the same. I'm kind of bummed about that being removed, as it was one of the biggest hallmarks of the VS "technological flexibility" style of gameplay. This could be a way to try and implement something similar, I guess.

Uh... moot point because there is no inventory anymore.

Yes there's no inventory any more, but there still is ammo, and we've seen on stream people running out of ammo occasionally. Think of it as batteries: all batteries can be used to power electronics, but some require more batteries than others.

Dang, you got me before I finished my edit. I misunderstood your point at first. See above for new comments on the idea.

I don't have a problem with it conceptually, but if it were implemented, I'd want all of their magazines to look the same. I think we're too far into art assets for that to be realistic.

In theory it could work but as already said I think it will cause imbalance.

Yeah, do that.

So when a VS runs his AV dry and switches to his Pulsar, he will happily realize that it's empty.

It took me a while to actually figure out what you mean... I would periphrase it as:
How about all ES VS weapons having common pool of ammo, so when your ammo pool on your Fission runs out, it also runs out for, say, beamer. Does not affect the loaded battery (magazine).

---------------------------------------------------------
I think something of that manner can be implemented, but it will be hard to find the right balancing for. Because if you have enough energy to make a standard amount of Fission shots, then you have too much energy to shoot with your handgun, that's OP. Or if you have the standard pool for your handgun, than you won't have enough ammo to use the Fission properly.

In this situation it's very hard to refrain from giving player either an OP amount of ammo or the amount insufficient for proper use.

This was partially in PS1. If I recall correctly, Pulsar, Beamer, and Lasher all used the same ammo. Based on the 'ammo' I've seen them put into weapons, it appears as though it is in again. The majority of VS weapons appear to take that little circular miniature UFO as ammo.

VS also should get normal and armor piercing ammo all in one again :D
