Hey guys -
Just home from E3 and wanted to pop in here first thing.
You all know what a huge show it was for us, and you might be the only people who aren't surprised at the amazing reactions we've gotten from everyone who are just discovering the promise of a PlanetSide game. I wanted to offer (yet again) a huge thank you to all of you, several journalists I talked to brought up what a passionate and awesome community PlanetSide has. They know that when they post articles about the game they get tons of positive reaction from planetsiders sharing memories of their favorite online gaming moments and honestly, the buzz you create with your tweets and posts on facebook definitely don't go unnoticed.
I really hope you all enjoyed the coverage these last few days. I know you're itching to get your hands on the game, believe me when I say that theres nothing I want more than to get everyone in and start hearing feedback - but please try to be patient as we work on building the MMOFPS experience that you all want and deserve.
Thanks for taking this ride with us!

Buzz is deserved as the game is apparently pretty damn awesome.
The E3 show you did was, btw, as good as it gets. Getting Totalbiscuit to do the live streaming was a stroke of genius. He's a pretty awesome presenter.

Higby is it weird that I love to hear you talk about planetside? You truly sound over the top passionate about the game and I love it! More than I can say about the rest of the Dev team that I have seen. Its almost like this game is more than a job for you. Just... Keep them in line Oh and throw the TR some love every so often.
All the devs are doing a great job. But please can I get at least a little less fake emotions about the game from you? Also what happened to the TR devs? I didn't see a single one. :/

We, the Planetside community, cannot thank the developers enough.
Most of us never even thought of the possibility of Planetside 2. I for one, had a conversation with someone long ago on how cool it would be for a sequel with improved graphics, but not once did we think it was a possibility.
When I heard of Planetside Next, I was in shock. Planetside was my first MMO that I paid monthly for, and first real MMO (the only other before it was Runescape, can you really call that an MMO back then in 2002?). I have and will always be a Planetside player, and with it free to play, I will never stop shooting.
P.S. Thank you Higby for being Gold and Blue, BWAHAHAH!

I started playing MMOs when I was a young lad, around 12. First was Ultima Online, then Planetside, after while I moved to games like WoW and EVE Online. Which game gave me the best memories? Which game gave me the best friends that I am still in contact with all of these years later? Planetside.
My friends and I would always wish that a new Planetside would come, but we never thought it would happen. Planetside Next is all I could have ever hoped for.
And now, for the first time in ages, the whole gang is about to come back together to kick some TR and VS ass.
And I have never been more excited.

Matt, I really appreciate all of the late nights and weekends that you and the whole team have been putting into the game. I know you all have put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into making this E3 build what it is - and it really shows. It seems there's more and more polish every time I see a new video.
Now you guys all deserve some R&R before the beta floodgates open. That's when all of us get *our* chance to put some blood, sweat & tears (virtual) into your game!
And congrats on a very successful E3!
As cliche as it is, Planetside 2 is a dream come true. I'm not just talking about the game, as improbable and incredible a feat. I'm also talking about the entire team. You guys did more than put together a game; you gave it a soul and continue to not only be the most incredibly talented group I have seen, but the most good-hearted bunch imaginable. Thank you for everything.
With such tremendous success, perhaps SOE could launch the beta in the next week? Y'know, get everyone celebrating? A real one-two knockout punch!

Was really satisfying to see Planetside 2 win all of these awards, and I think they deserve better. It was in my opinion the best of the show, even when trying not to be bias. There were a few other interesting games, but Planetside 2 has a lot of the most impressive things. I'm very happy it got best of the show from gameinformer(?) and many nominations. Hell, it wasn't even shown at a conference and got all of this.
Hearing the "beta in the next few weeks" from multiple of the devs is getting me pretty pumped.
Grats on all of the E3 rewards and such a great show. Additionally, a GREAT job with bringing the news to the community, showing the stream, and even having a stream before e3 showing off stuff. How often do you see something like that? Almost never. Rambling at this point.
I'm a very big lurker, but sometimes seeing how much effort devs put in witht he community really makes me want to participate in the community a little more.:)

And please let us crash whatever bug ridden code you have today. If I'm locked upside down on my head, crash every 5 minutes and can only use my knife, I'll file bugs on all 3 with a silly grin and enjoy it.

You're welcome!
And thanks to you and your team being part of the community.
Looking back thru our old guild forums I noticed a post back on 27th Sept 2009.
We'd heard rumors of a PS2 before and had been sceptical that it would ever actually happen.
This was though the first time it actually looked like it was for real.
The email went like this:
That’s right, you heard what we said! We plan to expand the PlanetSide® universe with another game and we need your help with the design. After all, who knows the game better than you, our customers, the people who actually play it! Don’t worry about the original PlanetSide, it isn’t going anywhere.
We want to hear your opinion and to do so we have put together a short survey. The information you provide will play a critical role into helping guide the development and direction of the next hit Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter. As a loyal player and experienced shooter fan, we value your input and look forward to hearing what you have to say.
And here we are today, absolutely pumped that we are about to step it up a notch and hopefully, through beta, contibute to the game we have been waiting years for.
Again, thanks back at you guys for being part of the PS2 community and not just distant developers of a PC game.

Thanks Matt, great show, it was way more impressive than I had expected. Y'all did a great job with the PR.
Don't mind us all nitpicking things. Forums might seem a bit negative but it's all because we care :)
Game is really shaping up well and coming along a lot more quickly than I had expected it would. You've done in a year what I think would have taken most game companies two. And of course you've made a lot of great design decisions. Some are harder to swallow than others, but nearly all of them make sense after a little thought.
I hope that with beta (and NDA) you are able to give us more candid insight into what it is you are going for when discussing design and decisions.

We won best MMO game from IGN, actually. That's a really HUGE award.
And well deserved I must add!
This was a great event for PlanetSide2, the stream+commentary was beyond description, I loved it. It almost felt like the entire event was dedicated to PlanetSide2 and it alone, the rest lingered in the shadows of the beast we all know and love.
Grats to the people of PS2/SOE and the fans!

We're probably one of the only gaming communities this close to our Devs. I mean seriously, I never really spoke with Higby in any way even on the forums, but it feels like I personally know him. We've watched countless comments, videos, and articles with Higby and given our full support to ensure what he made got the support it needed.
Now granted I speak of not knowing Higby and TRay and such, but apparently me and Clegg are each others "heroes", and I can't wait for Beta to start and to clegg a Galaxy alongside the originator.
Planetside 2 is probably one of the only games where I think the developers only care half as much on the typical importance that other devs value, and instead put more focus on how badly they want to play the game. In order for the game to have enough numbers it has to do well, and I think that factors in a lot. I believe this obsession with enjoying the game is what has really made PS2 come out so well as it has right now. I wonder if the Devs are gonna start their own special outfits to fight the players, or join existing community outfits in beta and launch.

Higby, thanks for making us feel like our opinions matter. I think the dream of a well done mmofps is what holds this community together so well. It's a vision we all share that will soon rock the gaming community the way it should have years ago. Props on the ambition and raw talent of the dev team for doing such a good job of fulfilling that promise that Planetside made to us all those years ago.
Well said Sir

I feel left out that I never knew about Planetside until TB uploaded his first few vids covering Planetside 2, I feel like all these years I've been playing the wrong games! But having TB as stoked about the game as yourselves and even having him doing the live commentaries was a great move, and surely has broadened your audience even further. I've even saved up some of the E3 footage so I can get my PS2 fix every day :P. Thanks (again) for creating the 'perfect' game!

I think many veterans would never have believed we'd get a successor to Planetside 1.
Planetside 1 still goes diwn as my favourite online game ever - the experiences in the beta and early release have never been replucated since.
You and your team have managed to execute a stunning game that strikes a brilliant balbce of bringing Planetside into the 21st centuary with mass appeal yet still addressing the long-term playerbase and ensuring our worries and concerns are addressed.
Well done to you all - amazing work all around :)

I wonder if the Devs are gonna start their own special outfits to fight the players, or join existing community outfits in beta and launch.
I'd figure almost all of them will have more.. "public" characters and then "secret" characters. No better way to kill your own gaming experience than to virtually play as a dev/GM/something along the lines :D
I'm sure they occasionally want to mingle with the community in such ways that they are clearly devs, but I'd figure most of them when they just want to enjoy the game on their off hours will be on characters where majority don't know who they are.
Also, just this thread.. I mean, Higby finally gets back home, probably hasnt slept much in the last 3-4 days and amongst the first things he does is come here to write us a thank you. I hope he at least give a kiss to the missus first :D

Thank you for allowing us to see the fruition of what many here have been wishing for for a long, long time.
The original , when brought out by soe , was almost like a bunch of cavemen discovering fire and looking at it and just saying '' wtf do we do with this? -come on , we got bears to hunt ''
I'm so pleased to have Matt and the team working on this now , genuine gamers loving and passionate about the thing they are creating. I know its a business and the bottom line is where it stops , but for the past 5+ years most games have , in my eyes been more about suits on high with no idea or care for their product. Just the spreadsheet.
Hopefully this enthusiasm will grow and continue for the next 10 yrs . Quick fixes , the next big thing just get surpassed .
The industry as a whole needs to think of games especially mmo's as a big family growing and evolving . The psu community is like a kindred spirit .
Once again, thank you , and hopefully we wont be left by soe with a geriatric gerbil on a bicycle running the game once its released.

Why are you thanking us? You're the magician constructing this legend, not us. You should be thanked for appreciating your fans and actually listening to them, unlike many other developers who don't even care to listen to their players who pay money for their games. Thank you, Mr Higby.

Thank you for taking the risk to evolve the FPS genre...We know Planetside was one of the first but Planetside 2 is gonna make MMOFPS mainstream.
This is sorta what's hilarious about this situation. Planetside maybe wasnt a commercial success for many reasons, but damn, it pretty much did this in 2003 with extremely limited technology.
It's totally unacceptable that nobody else have really even tried to do it since (except like WW2OL before Planetside, but meh..). So probably two of the more awesome feats in the near history of gaming were done in 2001-2003. Technology has only evolved and we've only been staying at pretty much the exact same spot, just with prettier graphics and evolved gameplay mechanics.
That said, I don't mind that much. PS2 will probably be the first "modern" succesful MMOFPS. Let's hope it gets the "WoW" effect with that advantage, where all the similar games after it are just failing "WoW clones" :D I'm not expecting WoW-like success baseline, just the similar effect of being the first to mainstream something.

I remember the first time I saw Higby.
It was on the (live?) video where they showed for the very first time the very first trailer of what was, back then, Planetside Next.
Smed introduced Higby on the scene, as the creative director of the game, and my first reaction was "Woah! That guy looks like a kid with long hair!"
I had no idea at the time that Matt was going to turn into the charismatic beast he now is.
As a Planetside fan, you have to love his passion for the game and the community, and I can shamelessly say that I love that guy for what he's been doing for and with us.
Matt, if you ever read this, know that you're the one to be thanked. Smed couldn't have chosen a better person to make Planetside 2.
But I won't forget the whole PS2 dev team who's been really awesome and active, like I've never seen devs be before.
They've just proved that game developpers can really be passionate by their games, and that the industry isn't full of money-eating pigs yet.
Sooo, yeah. Thank you again Matt and the PS2 team.
You guys totally deserve what's happening for Planetside 2, and much more.

I'd like to thank you and the team for EVERYTHING.
SURE there are features i'm not a fan of in planetside2 but those things do not make this game anyless than AWESOME.
The level of interaction we continue to receive for the PS2 team and SOE both here on the forums and on the various other channels (IRC/Twitter/Facebook/Reddit) is something i have never seen from any major studio let alone a studio pumping out a genre setting AAA+ FPS game.
The E3 coverage was epic (despite me being GMT) Purrfectstorm and Arclegger did a fantastic job along side Totalbiscuit in really enthusing and explaining "Planetside" to the masses . With one interviewee hitting the nail firmer on the head with soething along the lines of "you cannot explain planetside2 properly without having played planetside".
Higby you various interviews came across great and its still amazing to see how excited this game makes you.
The beta promotion stuff with twitter and facebook was hilarity.
In closing well done on the awards too it is nice to see planetside 2 getting the recognition that the original never saw.
P.S. Insta seat switching is BAD :)
Oh and beta invite please
Congrats on a job well done!
Huge thanks to the dev team. The game is absolutely beautiful. I've never followed an E3 as close as this one.
Thanks to Totalbiscuit for making us feel like we were right there with you guys.

Thank you Matt and the entire team for supporting the community in a way I have never seen before in another game. We had a great level of interaction with PlanetSide but it was nothing like it is with this game. Thank you for coming on these forums and answering questions, posting comments and participating with the community. And for posting pictures on Twitter keeping us all interested and excited about PlanetSide 2 even in early development.
I'm probably one of the few here who has had the chance to meet most of the dev team and they are as much linked to us as we are to them. The devs all know about the community, they are all reading these forums on a regular basis even if they don't post. They have built an amazing team and raised the bar for community interaction so high I don't think anyone else could ever think of attempting to surpass it.
Higby, T-Ray and the crew are just as awesome in person as they are online. :D
I am proud of the community that has built around this game and I am excited to welcome so many new faces into this community and game we all love. It's been a hard road with lots of bumps along the way. But the Team at SOE has helped support us the entire way through. And let's not forget RadarX who gets to personally listen to me vent on numerous occasions :)
This community has a partnership with SOE, and PlanetSide 2 that cannot be rivaled. I for one cannot wait to see where this road continues to take us. On to many more awards and hours of fun in PlanetSide 2!
If you have the means and the cash, I encourage people to go to SOE Live this year so you can meet many of the devs in person. It has the potential to be a great event - let's make it one!

I know coming back after hearing about the possibility of a sequel to Planetside, I've been nothing but impressed with not only the devs but the community. I thought, how in hell can they make a sequel to PlanetSide that's free to play and will actually be any good? It'll feel cheap, they'll dumb it down or do something really stupid... I mean look at what's happened to FPS gaming over the last few years?!
But I gritted my teeth and waited. The media began to trickle in, and the graphics and artwork looked good. Knowing that T-Ray (whom I'd met in Orlando) was handling the artwork was a relief. I knew that my beloved faction wasn't going to be turned into something unrecognizable. In fact, it was starting to become even a little more unique.
Videos started to reveal something that looked like what I enjoyed so much, but with some new tweaks and changes that at first felt a little scary (You're making my Mossie a TR-only aircraft?!) but started to make sense, and helped define roles a little bit more.
The more I've watched and read, the more confident I've become that my old PlanetSide is coming back and will be better than ever. Sometimes I still worry that the TTK is too low, but I'll be in Beta and I'll voice my concerns if it doesn't feel right. Part of me is looking forward to having a chance in situations where a few well-placed shots will score me a kill against a much-better equipped opponent. Part of me mourns the loss of my Special Assault weapons, but the other half thinks greedily of how I'll be able to build a weapon that fits my style like a glove. Part of me thinks I'll miss being a Rexo Sniper, while part thinks with anticipation the things I could do with an infil suit and my rifle.
In short, thank you Higby, and to everyone else on the team over there. You guys have got the flavor of PlanetSide 2 right, and I'm yearning for a taste of the action!

When I heard PS2 was actually being worked on I kind of ignored it. Played PS1 since release and over 9 years watched it deteriorate and be destroyed by horrid support, and even worse decissions. Needless to say my expectations for PS2 being even remotely as good as PS1 was when it first came out was right around 0.
Now however, after being shown otherwise, I am scouring the forums every day to read up on anything that has to do with PS2, watch every video, even if it has shit I have read about 15 times already. I even made a twitter account and used FB to follow PS2 and the devs. And I HATE social media of all kinds with a passion, yet this game, and the people working on it got me to tollerate them.
The work you are doing is amazing as is keeping in touch with the community. Been playing MMO's since 2000 and this is the most interaction with the community by Dev's I have ever seen and it makes PS2 even more special.
However Higby, if the Lancer is screwed up I will be forced to go Dev hunting during beta and chain-kill the lot of you.

I'm not sure if the Lancer is returning or not, but I heard talk of the new Fission being given a dumb fire variant. If it's slow dumbfire rockets, it won't be any replacement for the Lancer at all, but if it's fast pulses like the Lancer, I'll settle for the name change. Maybe the variant will even be called the Lancer.
But I would much prefer to have the old Lancer back as it's own entirely separate weapon line.

Someone posted pics of the cert tree, which had "Lancer - Anti-Material Plasma Rifle" as an HA cert.
I too will be very mad if the Lancer isn't recreated almost perfectly. I expect the same general shape of its model to return, and have the same amazing charge-up "whoop pew" action. It's the greatest gun in any FPS, ever.

Sweet.
Yes. My favorite infantry gun from Planetside. I don't usually miss overpowered things, but I certainly miss the overpowered Lancer that could kill infantry in, I think it was 3 shots. Still fun to snipe infantry with it even after it was nerfed into balance.
