They are slightly transparent, so the stars behind them show through

Except for the VS. We just love frolicking in glitter

On closer inspection I have no idea why I thought they are transparent... Looked like that on the thumbnail

Looks to me like that art is for the Chinese version of the game, going by the asian appearance of both the TR and NC guys.

If I'm right, it's interesting that they've made the VS guy look more westernised/black - maybe it's to emphasize that the VS are "different", and make them feel slightly alien to a Chinese audience.

It's to emphasise that T-Ray is VS :D

Maybe I'm over-analysing - I just got used to the idea of different localisations of a game having different graphics - League of Legends does it, for one.
