View Full Version : What's your favorite "Planetside Moment" that wouldn't be possible currently in PS2?

I think we're all sort of missing the point. It's not that having something that is more complex is good, it's just that as of now, there seems to be a lot fewer elements from the first in terms of gameplay.

We MISS those gameplay elements because they create what I call PLANETSIDE MOMENTS.

This is not to say they will not be added later, but I think if anything can affect a dev team it's some solid reminiscing on our part.

And Planetside can be awesome.

Mine:

Base is about to run out of energy, your empire launches a last ditch operation with a Galaxy and several attack aircraft as escorts, the attack craft draw fire, clear the NTU silo and BARELY manage to secure the drop point, the gal is in the clear, you're about to survive, and the ANT bails out and decons on a wall, and you all lose and are summarily executed. But you CAN'T STOP LAUGHING.

You're in the middle of an LLU run when your skyguard crests a hill, meeting several enemy aircraft, you're overwhelmed, your empire mounts a rescue mission, but it's just a distraction to draw people away from the base, where 3 massive gal drops land, and resecure while you slug it out in the field.

You're the lone cloaker, you manage to surge through a Backdoor breaking an inter-farm's perimeter. You have a router bad, and you sneak down a ramp towards the basement to set it up, opening the flood gates for your empire. But your plans are interrupted, and enemy surging down the hall has run into you, he stands for a moment confused, you see him draw his weapon, but you've already plugged an entire AMP clip into his head, and he falls to the ground. Your breathing comes back to normal, you set up the pad, and your empire drops the gen, eventually taking the base, but as a disadvantage with no power.

The way the boarding animations replicated that feel of the scene in the movies when everybody's climbing into their cockpit on the runway, or hopping out triumphantly after a successful mission.

You know what there's going to be?

Planetside 2 moments.

(besides that #2 isn't ruled out of the game at all, and #3 will certainly have very similar occurrences)

Last minute ANT drops to save a base.

Seeing entire squads climb into a Galaxy without teleporting.

Being that one dick who tries to drain a base by himself, planting viruses into everything and CEing the CY against incoming ANTs.

Killing a dirty NC with the Jackhammer I just pulled off his buddy's corpse.

Hacking a BFR out from under its driver.

Being that squad that secures a cave lock, opening a link with cave benefits to a contested continent, completely altering the course of the battle there.

But I'm looking forward to new Planetside moments in this game :)

I dont think I have any great memories that wont be possible in PS2. My favorite that did happen had to be when i got my ass kicked in an air fight and flew off. I bailed after flying down into a forest and managed to evade my pursuer. Decided the best tactic i had available was running to the nearest base (enemy) and seeing if i could cause some small confusion. On the way there a massive armor and aircraft fleet starts leaving said base and turn to head -right- in my direction... I duck behind a hill. Just a small one. Large enough to cover me. Moments later, large force of air flies overhead followed by the ground armor passing me by. Hooooly crap was that close. Subsequently, i managed to get into their base and put a hack in to slow them down for a bit.

The BFR part of the armored division passing me by -right over me- is probably the part that wont happen in PS2 :P

My favorite part of PS2 is pretending that core combat and BFRs never happened. =P

Begging the empire for 1 person, just 1 person to do an ANT run only to watch the base drain down to neutral snice nobody wanted to do that tedious task.

Oh, or were you talking about positive moments?

Nobody, including yourself apparently ;)

I kind of liked even those moments, made a successful ANT run all the more awesome. You can't have light without dark.

Anything related to the ANT. I REALLY wish PS2 had a similar mechanic to NTUs.

I once got a vanguard perfectly stuck at the TOP of a tree like it had fallen from the sky nose first.

Also dropped an enforcer from a galaxy and barrel rolled it down the side of a hill, then somehow managed to leap it over the enemy walls. That was before they "fixed" the physics engine though.

Here is one I kept, either theres a beacon under the vehicle or someone was really lucky: http://postimage.org/image/im8x0kuz5/

Sitting on my ass for 15 minutes waiting for a hack to go through so I can earn my BEP bonus. Yay.

For those of you bemoaning the loss of NTUs/ANT, I'd like to remind you that they weren't in the release of PS1, but were added later.

PS2 will undoubtedly have lots of Awesome Stuff added on as time progresses. I'm eager to see what the game will look like a year or two after release.

drop spit, pull out repeater, own rexo.

Dropping prox bombs next to spits and watching it kill random infantry. (rare)

Sitting up a tree/tower/etc dropping plasma nades on peoples heads and watching them glow green while never being able to find me.

max altitude lib bombing, AKA fishing. I don't forsee cluster bombs making a come back at nearly the same spread or power they had.

Boomering people, the game is going to be too fluid to do this to anyone but snipers, and if I have to pay to use boomers, man that's going to be expensive.

That's just off the top of my head.

Holding the Gen room against hordes of Pissed off TR and VS. I have had just wonderful memories doing spec op runs with my outfit locking down gen rooms. Another planetside moment that I will miss is clearing the CY at the last possible second as a Gal or Lodestar drops a ANT off at 10% to save the facility and keep the fight going. Some of the most Epic fights/comebacks have come out of situations like that.

An ANT race.

Specifically, my ANT hitting another ANT at speed and then being propelled to the other other side of the continent and into the ocean in a matter of seconds.

I wish I'd recorded it.

Sniping mechanics as mentioned before. Separated the boys from the men in my opinion, haha. How many times the other snipers in my outfit and I had contests for max range moving target kills.

AMS driving. Something about the AMS always appealed to me, no weapons, relatively squishy, and slow. I loved taking the risk and seeing how close I could get without being a bother to my Empire. I wonder if they will bring it back or give us sidegrade options to make the sunderer more like the original AMS :)

Oh! Another one was sniping poor smurfs phoenixing people from afar. They think they're so clever with their cover and guided rockets, haha.

And my favorite PS moment that I will probably relive? Hopping into game, spawning at a base or tower, having to run to where the fight is because I can't spawn vehicles or something and cresting a hill to find a galaxy gunship flying low and directly overhead. I can usually say I'm not an emotional gamer, but the amount of "Crap crap crap crap!" I screamed and my roomates all having a good laugh at my expense....priceless :) That or replace GG with Prowler or Vanguard.

I'm gonna miss those old base layouts, and even miss how hard it was for us in those bases, dodging to the side of a narrow passageway, only surviving cause of the low accuracy of all the guns.

I sign in for the first time and step into the world. I wonder what to do and let the HART shuttle drop me off at the first battle I see.
I fall in amidst several other pods into the middle of the largest engagement I had seen at the time. So many people fighting! @.@
Nothing will top that first sight of the size of combat.
And now that I've already been through it and am ready for this game, I won't get to have the same awe as I did that first time.

I think this sums it up. I think we'll be seeing a lot of stuff being added and tested as the game evolves. I can't think of anything I'll personally miss that isn't already in the new game. There's just a lot of stuff I'd still like to see added that never got added to the first. :)

This.

More than anything else, this.

People sharing ammo because you're all running out, people frantically repairing your MAXs, watching the thumper rounds fly through the door, watching them blow up a few feet from you :p.

Good times.

Base is getting overrun, and the call goes out for a gen hold.

We all pile into the room, we've got at least 25 infantry and 5 maxs. People are sharing ammunition, juice, medpacks, grenades. The MAXs are half filled with rifle ammo and juice. Medics are reviving and repairing and supporting.

And we hold that thing for 20 damn minutes. We only got over run because we finally ran out of ammo.

That kind of REAL team work means more to me than some guy spawning free ammo without a single thought. Giving ammo will be a completely meh thing now.

We made sure our shots counted, and no one knew anyone else, but we worked like an actual team.

This too has been a favorite passtime of mine since counter-strike. And it was all the more exciting in PS1 because you'd go from backpack to backpack, usually finding nothing but a REK or some grenade you don't want or health kits you don't need. And then finally - paydirt! Some bloke died with a lasher still on 'em... but no extra ammo boxes. Must use the charges remaining in the gun wisely!

This definately brings an additional level of gameplay to those who have already done everything and are looking for more of a challenge. Plus it's always fun to show off how good you are (or arent) with other faction's weaponry.
