Everyone wants to be on NA West?

I'm hearing a lot of 2 contradictory things lately, and I wanted to start some discussion about the contradiction.

1) Everyone (all but one outfit I read, for example) plans to be on on the North America west server. I've heard it referred to as the one actual global server.
2) People are still firmly believing they want servers split by geographic location, while at the same time everyone is actually planning to go to one server so far as I can tell.

Are the other servers really just for people who can't fit into or have good enough ping on NA West, the "real" server? Whats going to happen when everyone wants to play on NA West but really its full most all the time and we end up rolling alts we dont care about on other servers just to play?

What's going to happen when all your friends are on NA West and you can't login to join them?

I'll be playing on NA East if they have one for latency reasons. Personally this problem has been covered in a few threads. Some people really believe that locking characters to servers is the only way to form a community. I imagine that means that some servers will simply experience a character registration lock after a certain point to keep the player count reasonable. Realistically with 3 continents only 6K people per server can play at a time. That might mean 10K people registered max and then they'll slowly let people in to even out the population. Kind of complicated situation really.

If it got really bad I assume they'd create a solution.

If their F2P model gathers enough attention (which it looks like it does), they'll have more than just 2 servers for NA.

With that in mind, I'm going to try all of them out first to see who's crowd I like. I get pretty much the same ping to anywhere in NA from here in Texas.

im guessing most people on the PSU forum are closest to the NA west server, so it just seems natural, i played on the NA east server in ps1, because at the time i was stationed in north carolina, now i live in good ole Arizona, (no more gun laws!) so i will be on the NA West server, and i hope to see you all there, hopefully at my side, but probably through my scope! :trrocks:

Which US West server? Giving the huge number of people this game will have to serve because of the Free 2 Play there will probably need to be 10 US West servers. I'll probably play on one of the East one's anyway. Or the subscriber only server if they have one.

N. American servers will almost certainly be located in the same place. 10 years ago ping time could be significantly reduced just by placing them on either end of the continent, but thankfully technology has advanced.

So you can stop the east/west epeen measurements.

I would hate for this dream come true to turn away all my gamer friends in Aus, like every other game with high ping eventually does. At least if there is noticablly higher latency, the US players will chuck an even bigger shit, and SOE might actually do something about it ;p

Epeens aside, it is like that they will designate servers by region to simplify how players will cluster. Not forced, but note on them West, East, Asia, SKYeXile, etc. It would be great to think that we will see Markov, Emerald, Johari and all the traditional names, but that most likey won't happen since it will be NA West 1, NA West 2, etc. They could call the West servers all Markov, and have Markov 1, Markov 2, etc.

I hate to see the community fragmented, which is why I was searching for a solution that would put as many players as possible on each server.

If only 6000 can be on a server at a time, then 17 servers will be needed for 100,000 players at a time.

i could and did, but i want to play with as lower ping as possible, since planetside does not need a single server structure theres no reason not to have them at each major hub on the coasts.

For most games from England I get something like 40-60 to EU servers (berlin/paris etc), then about 90-120 US East, 140+ US West.

EU is definitely where i'll be, but if I'm prime time hopping due to working odd hours most sensible US locations are in the same sort of ballpark. A centralised US server wouldn't trouble me much.

i dont really have set schedule for my playtime either, but i'm not really worried about primetime or downtime , just because you are not playing in primetime doesnt mean the game is worse , just different.

the only reason i ever went on the us servers in ps1 is when there was a gathering going on in the sanctuary or something.

there will be plently of action in the EU, just because most of this forum is filled with americans doesnt mean the EU servers will be empty or without skilled players or ps1 vets

While Vegas is not close from east coast, your trip is shorter than my northern east to southern west coast trip. I guess you confirm the kind of latency I will get. Around 150.

The Europe based servers will be full! There are also plenty of English speaking outfits in europe on all three empires
example:
VS - Vanu Conglomerate - ask basti what the craik is.
NC - Fight Club and Brutal Deluxe - ask Figgy what the craik is and mastechief can perhaps speak for Mercenarys
TR - Better Red than Dead - I don't know who on here can speak for them but they are currently active in ps1

My outfit will be reforming (outcasters on TR) were still playing on ps1 at a relatively low level of activity, I am not actively recruiting as yet for ps1 but we will be once beta starts www.outcasters.net

That's Vanu Corporation but yeah HA! I have met some damn fine VS players from Europe over the past few years. UMVS, RISK, Dow, VC. All damn fine players and will be missed from the NA scene, if they chose to go that way. BRTD, LOL you talked with psycho about that endorsement? TR... unleashed, OC, BRTD.... NC Mercs, (No) Fight club (just had to say that). Just in the past couple years of small pops all these EU outfits made an impression on me. I'm sure I left a lot out but EU wont be lacking for vets from PS.

Not at all.

I don't think ping will be that much of an issue.

Put it this way, in PS1 there were many UK players playing on East Coast US servers (ping around 120), in fact some core players in Delta Triad outfit (one of the best on the East US server) were on the this side of the pond (ie east).

In my outfit we also had quite a few US based players including at least 1 in California and a few in Russia, Scandanavia etc etc.

So don't discount it yet :)
