Hey All,
As some of you know someone figured out how to DL the PlanetSide 2 Beta client (Higby talked about it on Twitter). Please do not create any threads explaining how to do this or what methods will used as they will be removed. Please do not share assets gathered from the client.
Feel free to discuss this issue in this topic, and this topic alone.
Enjoy. :p

If some folks figured out how to download the client then imho they were allowing people to download the client remotely to do game testing. Thats another sign of closed beta right?

I must reiterate the statement of others here. It's been no real time since E3, and I'm already twitching. I need a Developer Log, a "HEY WE MADE THIS COOL THING!!!!" post, or something. I know the devs tweet when they add sweet content (like Liberator bombing being added), but I need screenshots. Videos. My eyes need beautiful content!

Well they are making this Beta mostly for hype, and im sure if you don't have a key from twitter and you are singed up on site you will get in.
the only thing i see is the Beta will start soon if the Beta client as been implemented but i do not think downloading it will allow anyones to get in in any ways so i will wait for my precious Email :D

Just makes me even more excited about beta! But I'm doing my best to savor every moment, because when I do get in, I'm going to beta test the living hell out of that game. And when the NDA is lifted, I'm going to record the hell out of it as well.

Sadly when the beta will come out it will probably be Schedule and will not be open like 24/7
It will probably be like 2 session of 4 hours a week so its not a lots and some people will not be able to play for many reason they ad to sleep they ad to work it will always depend when they will put those sessions
But i really doupt the first stage of the beta will be 24/7 lol its almost impossible
in a few months when more people will get in they will make it 24/7 like in september or october maybe november !

While I understand the security risk of having the client exposed, I'd personally love to have it simply so when beta starts, I just need to patch and not download the entire game.
Speaking of which, any idea how big it is, anyway? I'ma start the guess at 10-15 gigs.

So everyone knows. Somethingawful forums are the ones that figured it out. They are also the ones that reported it to Higby. In fact the same posters telling everyone on SA forums how to do it, were at the same time sending Higby DMs on twitter to close down beta servers. Goon mentality doesn't have to make sense.

Lets hope that the devs are well aware of how quickly these certain websites tend to develop their special game specific software to sell to special gamers.

As in regards of the topic, this usually happens with most games in one way or the other. I'm surprised how fast SOE managed to get on top of things. (Well, it seems like they did pretty well at least.)
As long as they who got the client respect the devs of PS2 and SOE to keep the information mostly by themselves. We don't want any major leaks. Let them release the game/beta at their own pace. :)

Here are my predictions
1-closed beta has started
2-second wave of beat invites will go out in a couple of weeks
3-open beta in august
4-full release(yeah I said that 8 P) for christmas 2012
I hope Higby and the dev team don't feel betrayed. No one feels more strongly about pirated material than me - I personally lose money because of such habits - however in this instance, anyone everyone who pays attention to these leaks was going to spend our money in the game anyway and are even more excited to do so now. I am to attempting to excuse such behaviour, merely point out that so long as no harm was done to the beta process (and Higby has assured us there wasn't) this shouldn't have much of a long term impact on the success of PS2.

Well depending on what gets leaked could be a issue. If there is something found to be not very favorable could cause some people to go WTF. That would be bad especially when that something isn't probably finished and why the developers haven't shown us it yet.

It was SOE's fault for the server glitch and people are smart and work these things out, it happens with so many games these days thanx to everything moving to an online service.
They fixed the problem now and the people who were playing can get a temp ban or a warning and they can move on. People were going to get their hands on these files very soon anyways so no damage was done.

According to Higby, with the hack of the launchpad they were able to play the E3 version of the game for a (brief) time.

Well it wasn't like they just stumbled across it lying around. They had to hack the DCUO launcher. So I think they'd probably get slightly more than a slap on the wrist.

Hack is a word thrown around so easily these days, was it an actual hack or was it something as easy as changing a few lines in a config file or the launcher? I don't count that as a hack. It would be like getting banned from Crysis because I enabled Very High settings on a DX9 PC via a config.
I dunno how they did it though so depends on what they had to do to get access.

Wait, it was SOE's fault that players hacked into their game?? Where is this broad "this is their problem, not ours" attitude coming from??
The forum from which this whole debacle originated is already pretty scummy, and they worked with each other for hours to figure out how to pull it off.
That's not SOE being lazy or stupid. That's people being scummy.

I dunno I'd sit there messing around trying to change names in config files to see if it gives me access to it. Could be something as simple as changing DCUO to PS2 in a file and suddenly it starts downloading.
For that I don't see how a ban is worthy, however I wouldn't have then leaked all the files online because I think that is tasteless.
If they got in Anonymous then yes that is hacking and deserves to be investigated by the government as well.

I'm not saying they're meant to or not but it's whether or not it is ban worthy and I agree with a Temp Ban, not a perma ban.
But I'm saying that based on how I think they probably got in, I don't have the info SOE do and they'll probably make the right choice and make a statement about it.

I think this is one of the utopian concepts, so it's not sad by any means.

On the front of "it's SOE's fault, changing lines in a config file isn't wrong..."
I bet the actions were against the EULA for DCUO, at the very least. So, yeah, shitty thing to do. EULA's haven't, of course, gotten much chance to be tested, legally, so it's hard to say whether it was *illegal*... but SOE definitely has grounds to take action against those that took advantage of them if it chooses.
Just throwing that out there for those who might think of following in the footsteps (even though this leak is plugged).

I agree with you. This is disheartening for someone like me who has lived and breathed PlanetSide 2 ever since I first heard of it's existence. Years of hard work and hours spent on the game. Anticipation building for beta and then boom - someone downloads the client and starts ripping shit taking away the great experiences someone could have had opening the game for the first time.
I already had these experiences and I'm disappointed that someone else won't get them because they decided to look at ripped content.
If there is one thing I feel comfort in about all this it's the fact it did not originate from this community.

It all helps to drive the hype. I feel neutral about the client download and the music leak. If I were SOE I would not be upset that there are people out there so interested and passionate about the game that they try notorious things to access the data.
The only problem I forsee is that hacker groups get a head start on breaking the client open.
All things considering, when released the game client will be free to download regardless, so everyone with a net connection can have access to this material for free at some point. It would be different if it was pay-to-play.
This is a showcase of sorts, and gets people saying the words "Planetside 2" in their heads, and to their friends. I sent at least 3 messages to social media groups as soon as I heard the music tracks were available. How many others did the same? What is that worth to SOE?
I ceirtainly would not endorse legal proceedings against the leakers. I feel they did SOE a favour. Its like a marketing department they dont have to pay for.
(Edit: It would not surprise me to hear that SOE is responsible for the leak)

SOE should not have had the content that was leak available so easily imo. There's ways to lock down these types of things but they didn't. I'm thinking a little bit of cross-side scripting was going on here.
I do agree that the folks who did figure out the exploits should have reported the issue to SOE and that be the end of it. Where they did wrong was posting the content on the Internet for the world to see.

Hardly a hack, I believe they just changed a few lines in an .ini file. The Planetside 2 files were left online and accessible to the SOE launcher so it downloaded them onto their PC.

Probably wouldn't be a good idea, the client would probably change completely between the E3 version and the Beta version.
I still believe that this was done on purpose. The fact that it accessible through the Station LaunchPad is just a little bit too easy for it to have been an accident.

Not just that, but a game that means nothing without a multiplayer. A multiplayer that can't be accessed through a spoofed client.

Folks who don't want to see the stuff until beta (or later) don't actually have to read the threads / reddit posts / etc revealing stuff (and jumping to conclusions, apparently, in some cases). I haven't downloaded the music, or looked at any of it, except for looking at and posting in the one thread I just posted in a few minutes ago because apparently people think Jumping To Conclusions Is Fun For the Whole Family!
I can understand what you're saying from a forum moderator perspective, such as yourself, as you have to know what people are posting on your forums in order to enforce your rules, but the rest of us plebians don't have that responsibility here (or on reddit, which I usually ignore) and are free to just avoid all the spoilers, and honestly, I prefer not having to read everything, spoilers included. I've seen it from the other side, and it's less than enjoyable.
Side note: Modifying the ini file in question (and figuring out the appropriate values to put into it) to make the SoE launchpad application download the PS2 client instead of DCUO is something that I would consider on the same scale of difficulty as SQL injection, which comprises much of the "hacking" that you hear about in the news. So while at first I would have said "Editing an ini file? Not hacking, lol" - after thinking a moment, it clearly can be. :p

PSN isn't even a part of SOE -- everything Playstation is SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment). However, both Station accounts and PSN accounts had information exposed when that data breach occured a year ago, since it seems they share some backend systems internally.

Even with a 'small' sampling - having it set to, as you do, 'scheduled' dates is a terrible thing for betas (this is a proven fact known throughout the gaming industry... betas that start scheduled do not do well.) You're already handicapping yourself by testing a game with (arbitrary) 500 people we'll say, then to limit it to (once again, arbitrary) 4 hours a week... no one tests during those periods. I beta to test games, but I also enjoy the ability to play the game early - as all beta testers enjoy playing. When you're limiting the test to X hours, you're limiting the time testers can muck about... thus limiting the testing done by not only a.) testing by mucking about - but b.) with the limited availability people will just "play" and not as much try and break things.
My two cents from having tested well over 50 games and being in the QA department for a AAA studio.
