View Full Version : Compute your cost per day to play PS!

I just had a big nasty arguement on "why should I pay to play PS" with a few friends on a DoD forum. I finally got them to concede that its really a trivial amount with the following computation:

X (Time played in online games, assume all PS) times Y (4 weeks), then divide that by Z (the MAX cost the game would be for now of 15 dollars), then divide that by B (28 days).

or

X x Y / Z / B = Cost per day

Mine is thus:

25 x 4 / 15 / 28 = $0.23 per day.

I think I can justify less then a quater a day to play a game that will keep me preoccupied for a ling time.

At 30 hours per week in a 52 week year, that is 1560 hours of playtime. figure 15 dollars per month plus 50 bucks for the game the first year and my cost to play PS per hour is right around 15 cents an hour. Chump change, really. I probably spend more than that buying the newspaper everyday. Lets check: paper costs 1 buck per day except on Sunday when it is 1.75. So 365-52 = 313*1 + 1.75 * 52 = 404 bucks a year versus planetside cost of 230 dollars a year. So if money were a real problem for me (which it is _not_ heh) I could cut back on the newspapers every other day and practically pay for the cost of PS right there.

So the cost is really very trivial unless you don't play very much. And if you don't play very much, don't buy it. Simple.

I actually used a similiar equation before pre ordering my copy, it was different though, mine was :

Where X = amount of time played/month and Y = amount of enjoyment/month and Z = price/month.

(X * Y) / Z = Don't care how much it is

Actually, cost per hour is more important to me... So:

Z/(X x Y)=Cost per hour

$15/(24x4)= $0.16 an hour

In comparison, where I live, a normal movie theatre ticket costs $8.25. If you watched Gods and Generals, which most wouldn't even consider entertainment, you will be sitting in that seat for 4 hours. After you feel incredibly ripped off for losing 4 hours of your life, you will probably sneak in to another movie lasting roughly 2 hours. So

$8.25/6=$1.38

I think we are getting a steal ;)

It's probably going to be less than 15 though. EQ is about 12.95 if you pay only month by month. If you pay 3 months at a time it's roughly 12 bucks, if you pay 6 months at a time it's roughly 11 bucks and if you pay a year at a time, you're only paying 10 bucks a month. At least that's how it works in EQ. (the price goes down if you pay in lump sums for longer periods of time)

Well worth it since I consider this game to replace 1942, tribes 2, DAoC and most of my GCN games as far as my playtime is concerned.
