View Full Version : Make the Thresher Shoot a Beam Laser Instead of Purple Balls?

Ok, so I know the devs said they will eventually put in buggies. So I propose that they should change the gun on the thresher to a beam laser with an alt fire on it. Everyone knows the purple balls were terrible lol unless you were firing them into a big group of guys. So what I propose is that they make the gun shoot a straight teal beam laser sort of like from raiden project if anyone has ever played that over the top fighter jet game. It did high damage but had to hold it steady on the target. The alt fire could be that purple lightning beam from raiden project as well were it would split between multiple targets but do way less damage. Reply with your thoughts on this. I'm sure the devs could balance it out right with the damage to time ratio that you have the beam on the targets and actually make the threshers gun more useful this time around.

I would love a beam with an alt fire. The primary is a medium damage beam that does a constant amount of damage (X damage per second). The Alt fire however I'd love to see do increasing damage the longer it is on a single target. Think Void Rays from Starcraft 2. This would give the Thresher a lasting chance against larger targets like tanks. Then of course the alt fire wouldn't be as effective against infantry.

Or hell...Make it interchangeable...One or the other. Specialization baby!

Totally agree with you on this, hopefully they will test these ideas out. I'd love to see that make it into the game.

This has been argued before. The speed will make hitting targets with a beam pretty difficult.

I just hope they make the thresher look cool this time. Before it looked like the hover version of the old school bat mobile. Only reason it ever killed me is because I was too busy laughing at how stupid it looked to shoot it down with my AV weapon.

You dare insult my beloved Thresher? It looked badass, and the weapon was ridiculously easy to kill people with, while still being extremely powerful! It wasn't even hard to win a fight 1v1 against an Enforcer, tbh.

No changes needed IMO! I do really hope they add in buggies soon. They were the most fun to drive.

No changes needed, but come on. A beam weapon would be fucking awesome, especially on the Thresher.

Besides, all vehicles have multiple weapons that they can mount now. Why not have a weapon more like the original Thresher as one option, and a beam weapon as an alternate option? Much win.

I always wondered, vehicle mounted Lasher with more ouch and ball speed as AI weapon.

Oh well yeah, I don't care if there's both, but OP was saying there should be a beam instead. Just leave my Flux Cannon alone! :D

I generally had more fun driving a Thresher than gunning for it myself. I didn't mind the gun, but it was more just a gun, not something I was attached to. I'd probably enjoy a beam over the flux cannon.

But customization. Having both is a viable option.

That one gunner turret on the Magrider in one of TB's early videos seemed a lot like a dual Flux Cannon.

I actually would go for that if they just made them a choice. Then you could choose which one to use, since most of the other vehicles have that anyways.

I agree with you that it will be difficult to shoot at anything with the speed of the buggies. I also think though, that they should have more Empire Specific gun choices as to what we can equip on them. Honestly any gun will be difficult on any of the buggies unless it's got lock on capabilities.

A beam weapon is not a weapon for a buggy. Buggies are fast hit and run vehicles. You'd either want a high burst, low range weapon(like the Aurora burst fire from PS1), or an ultra long range weapon so it can kite opponents, like the railbeam.

Constant damage weapons are just a bad idea for the platform.

Like the Continuous Laser? The horrid magnifying glass of doom?

Laser and balls for MagRider would be rather fucking awesome, though, really, when then the Thresher would have a lesser variation of the design, maybe.

I always liked the orb stream on the Thresher. Get a smart driver and someone who could lead shots and the buggy could punch well above its weight. A buggy's speed gave it the ability to control the engagement so a mid ranged weapon worked out better than close or long range weapons would have. Forcing a light vehicle in close to brawl means it's vulnerable when closing and making it only good at range puts a dent in the need for high speed. Not totally removing it, mind you, but it hurts the skirmisher role.

I've got no doubt that the weapon systems will be modular, ai/aa/av and maybe a mixed-mode or single-mode/hybrid-purpose weapon like the orbs. I'd like to see versatility over anything else, especially for that class of vehicle.

Only because the guns on the Van/prowler sucked badly vs the thresher. And even then it was close. An equally skilled team in the tank would have killed you with little issue.

Nobody used the buggies for a reason. While fun, they were ineffective. You had to excel to be average. From the looks of the E3 footage, a PS1 style thresher would be a joke with its old weapn. All the tanks shoot a much faster projectile with a much flatter arc than the PS1 mortars. They will need to either be high range, to outrange the tanks, or have a huge burst so they can come from behind cover and get out quickly. They won't have the armor to stand up to tanks for long, and with the cannons as shown, they will be hit very reliably.
