Don't know if anybody has spotted this report yet:

http://www.pcgames.de/Planetside-2-PC-233308/News/Planetside-2-Video-890389/

Here's my translation

I'm gonna do what we journalists like to do the most: gaming...
We're at the SOE booth and gonna test a round of PlanetSide 2 which is a free2play MMOFPS... and we'll play it now.

The special thing about PlanetSide 2 is that theoretically it allows up to 1800 players. An unbelievable number which hasn't been achieved by any other.

There are as in every other Multiplayer shooter game quite a few vehicles, airplanes, tanks... all kinds of stuff. It can be spawned at any time and... now I'm sitting in one of these things.

They're moving a bit rough but we're still at a pre-beta phase. It can yet change.

The main objective on this map is to "uiuiuui" ^^ take this facility in the middle. Therefore we have to hold certain control points.

In PlanetSide 2 there are 3 faction. This is interesting... meaning there are 3 faction fighting each other simultaneously.
That's why it's quite chaotic at the beginning and not really easy to hold points.
Oh... Now they shot me out.

There are 6 classes in PS2: the infiltrator, 2 different assault classes, a medic, an engineer, and a quite heavily armored fighter.
The interesting thing is you can completely customize all of the fighters. You can change the color of the armor, the weapons. There are unlimited things you can customize. There are many things to explore.
PlanetSide 2 is a free2play game that means there is a item store which is not meant to improve your fighting abilities to win, it's more about optical/cosmetical things... this very typical "no pay2win".

I'm going to try a light assault fighter which has a jet pack like in Tribes Ascent, means I can catapult myself over the battlefield. And I'm just being dropped onto the battlefield in a kind of escape pod. Til now I didn't do so well... Let's see if it's gonna change.
So, here's the jet pack... and a tank in front of me which is not the best foe for me.
The most heavily armored fighter here, the MAX, can even handle a tank if he wants.
I prefer to fuck with infantries.

PlanetSide 2 offers a squad system like you know it from other games like BF3. Up to 10 persons can be in it. And the squad leader can give you special orders where to go, what to attack which lets you earn specific points.

So, I grab myself a vehicle... ... if it only worked...
Now I'm with somebody in a tank. Let's see what's that going to be.

So I'm going to kill myself because the really interesting thing about PS2 is this map here.
PS2 has a really huge map with many different points the 3 factions are fighting for. So this is a sector where we're currently located. If I'm zooming out you'll see the whole map and each of these territories is being fought for and this is only a minor part of a much bigger universe.
The game wants each of the 3 factions to fight for the territories in a kind of sandbox game... namely for ressources, and these ressources will give you money and power.
Meaning there will be huge wars between different guilds (which are called differently in the game) and the actual factions. This will make the frontiers shift and it'll stay a very dynamic game and I think this will be the reason why this game is going to be a success.

Oh, I did not die... like that. Apparently we took a point. This facility belongs to us.

The vehicles and airplanes can only take some few shots which enables you to respawn very quickly and doesn't make it too unfair. Means you somehow always have a chance to survive... you'll spawn quite fast so it's all not that serious and stuck like in a BF3 match.

I killed one...ohoo

Oh I can mount this "phalanx" :-? ... nice
I only need an opponent.

My map tells me on the left there is one. He won't see it coming... haha
stand still!... Too bad, nearly got him. Ah... at least got some points for it.

So now I'm using my jet pack... one of my few advantages on this battlefield.
Ah, one of our mates is taking this point... Here we have one of these big MAX robots.
These things can take quite a few shots but are hard to maneuver.

I think we're taking the point atm. I cannot do anything... certainly belongs to us. Move on.

After having played PlanetSide a bit I'm convinced that the game won't certainly be among the top games (considering game mechanics). But due to the implementation with this huge game world, with this incredible number of players it'll be certainly worth a try, especially cause it's free2play.
So when this game releases, and beta is going to be soon. Have a look!

He certainly isn't too impressed by the game. In another article by PC Games they also said PS2 wouldn't compete with other big fps titles (graphically) which wasn't aimed at any way... (wut?)

I was a little amused when he said something like PS2 being fast and easy while BF3 is a game where you have to fight long times to capture or hold a point (that's how I understood him)

I think it's the other way around at least for PS1. In BF3 you're dying all the way and quickly respawn while is PS a fight can go on for hours.

I think it's because of this E3 demo that he got this impression. Random base fights isn't really what PlanetSide was about. Sadly PC Games readers will think it's a BF3 wannabe with a futuristic setting.

Interesting read. He certainly didnt seem impressed, thats to bad. Though maybe he just didn't get it?

Its to bad the e3 "demo" was so limited with only one base, one capture mechanic etc. But oh well, once open beta and release the reviews will be much different.

Cheers,

GG

He seemed somewhat clueless and just rephrasing waht was told proalby at the press conference, i`m not sure but maybe this is not his category of games? Or he is a simple MMO typ and knows mostly RPGs?

@MacXXcaM: Thanks for the tranlation for our non german speaking users

The only thing that is certain is that he has no clue what he is talking about :D

Well he was somehow impressed by the potential that PS2 has considering huge maps and numbers of players. But to this point it's just awesome in theory (to the non-PS1 experienced audience) and the E3 demo seems to be more like a tdm (with some scattered capture points nobody really cares about).

As long as there's no visible vastness people won't see anything more than a kinda Battlefield with funny looking soldiers and weapons but without destructible houses. ^^

Good point. SOE still needs to actually show that PS2 can handle battles with hundreds and hundreds of players fighting in the same area. Rather hard to imagine just from the promise alone, atleast for those who don't know much about Planetside.

Basti should, from this point onward, always write to European (especially German) reviewers to correct their misunderstandings... like "PS2 is much faster spawn timer than BF3".

German gamesjournalism is pretty ficken atrocious, so I'm going to take anything they write with a metric fuckton of salt.

P.S.: Probably wasn't impressed because SOE didn't pay any kind of impressionmoneyz.

Is this pcgames.de a reputable and widely viewed entity in Germany or Europe for that matter?

I would say they are among the 3 most famous gaming magazines in germany... still that doesnt count for much, gaming magazines suck since internet kicked their asses.

The gameplay that gets the journalist are realy influencial.

OK at least this one got some decent gameplay (and we saw another turret footage :groovy: and we could compare the amount of hits with the other to know ho hard are the armor of the two different tank) not like the one from gamespot he got the worst gameplay ever i mean he died several times without seing an enemy or by bombs, and he was in night combat and it looked like a desert base almost like he was scarring away the players....

Methinks I will reserve my judgement of this magazine's credibility, until they make an actual review of the finished product, before sending them down into the lowest depths of tartarus:p

pc games is one of the biggest general gaming magazines in germany.

but i am sure they didn´t do their homework and were completely surprised by the ps2 booth!

i wrote them (even directly to the guy in the video!) about planetside 2, several months ago! and told them to come to psu to check for infos about the best game that will be released this year! they didn´t even answer the mail!

same for the biggest (or only) gaming tv-show in germany, Game One (mtv/viva).
they just aired a e3 special and didn´t even mention planetside 2! the game that won the most awards during e3! and to top this stupidity, they ranted about all the shooters at e3, only doing the same thing over and over again, only showing scripted hollywood scenes we don´t want to see no more.

and no word on the only shooter who uses real players to build up a warscene instead of using scripted background scenes!

pro7 is german, too.

but they seem to do their homework. they are spamming everquest 2 spots on tv right now! so they know how to advertise their new bought games!
if their customerservice holds up to their advertising, pro7 will not be a problem.

Pro7's campaign is a whole other story because they have a very good reason to advertise PS2: They earn money with it. Thats not comparable to our lame gaming magazines. I guess pro7 will launch a campaign as soon as the game is released, before that it doesnt really make sense.

Pro7's ad campaigns are pretty sweet actually.

If they push a PlanetSide 2 campaign after release I'm certain people will know about it.

you clearly see that he has no clue and because of this the people that watch this video will get a wrong impression of the game ... :fu:
i don't understand how a journalist can talk so much bs and even get paid for this.

Do we even know that PS2 is definitely slower than BF3? Sorry if this is a retarded question

another sidenote on pro7:

i just saw another ad campaign. they have aquired battlefield heroes as well with their pro7games portal and immediately started to spam this ad as well.

they seem to expand the portal very heavily! some months ago they only had some small browsergames, now they have quite some BIG franchises there!
need for speed, battlefield heroes and everquest, just to name a few.
and they started big campaigns for every one of them.

so in terms of advertising, pro7 will do a good job (at least for germany. don´t know what they want to do in other countrys).

Most european counties are quite unaware of the game. Finland, France and Hungary had not a single article about Planetside in their gaming press. I check the hungarian every frickin day, and not even a small nod or something on any sites. Not even on smaller ones.

Those 3 countries mean 80 million people and Germany seems to miss the point too, and with the german population we are close to 150 million people who don't have real coverage of the game. That's a huge market and something is definetly going wrong here.

I would not say, but in the German Podcast of E3 they said they definitely want to Play it !
So its Critic but its Typical German way to see things , to Keep it in Perspective, it was not such a Negative Sight.
In my humble Opinion and im German ,too.
