View Full Version : Gamespot Vid : Disappearing enemies?

I remember Dave saying that large numbers of players in an area will be managed by some disappearing when client load gets too excessive. In 100+ battles thats acceptable.

But... in the new Gamespot video there's a fight going on over an AMS. The player leaves the stealth bubble to chase some enemy; the guys he's chasing phase out of view (fade invisible). Even after leaving the bubble they phase in and out of view; and thats enemy maxes and soldiers not stealthers... so whats going on? The targets in question are only about 30ft away. Hopefully its a bug from jumping in and out of the AMS bubble, and not the client phase out thing Dave mentioned.

If it is... then... OMG. :( Having others phase into view and out when they're within spitting distance... <goes pale>

Not 100% sure, but I believe that was somebody logging off of the server (or more likely, being booted to their desktop).

might've been a glitch they're working on.

He leaves the bubble, but then he goes back inside in pursuit of the quad, then he goes back outside.

I'm guessing there is some delay involved in the phasing thing. When the quad leaves the bubble, GSBobC is still inside for a moment. So the quad phases out, but by that time GSBob may be outside the bubble and the phase out, phase in effects still have to play out.

I don't think it's a bug, but in any case I don't think we should be too suprised if we see some bugs. After all, if we can see it based on the limited info we have, then surely the testers and devs are well aware of it. Like the mosquito with legs bug.

seer, if what you're saying is right.. then the cloaking field is backwards. you cant see the enemies when you're in it >.< i dunno how it works really.

For those asking, the link is;

http://gamespot.com/gamespot/filters/products/media/0,11100,437493,00.html

It's part of gamespot complete though, so only available to members at this time. I recommend registering as they do have good content and means I haven't had to buy a games magazine for ages!

I'm hoping this is either;

1) A good old fashioned bug, linked to the stealth bubble.
2) Maybe you can't see OUT of the stealth bubble, but as Diluted said, that wouldn't make sense.
3) Or... there is alot of activity going on... it's the client side code cutting in to limit your visual range. We've seen screen shots of busy areas (Hamma's beta SS's) before without this going on, so maybe its the client setting on the Gamespot test machine? I'm figuring this type of range of view limiting won't cut in until at least 64+ players are on screen at once (probably more like 100+).

Hamma is unlikely to comment due to the NDA; unless it's been lifted while I've been away.

Time for a little faith me thinks :D

Yeah, that's my assumption with the cloaking field. The video has it working both ways--that's either a major bug or a feature, and do you think they'd let someone take away footage of a major bug?

Or they parked 2 AMS close together and one got hacked. :)

I think your right Maddog. On closer inspection, I think I can make out a second bubble out there, probably caused by a second AMS. That'd explain it :)
