View Full Version : Get rid of the New Motto, bring back the old

Anyone else find the new Motto "Size Always Matters" rather dumb? I've always felt that the Planetside 1 Motto was perfect, nothing came close to the amount of excitement I had when I first read the line:

For Land, For Power, Forever

I actually really wishing they'd use that again, anyone else agree?

I'm good with "For Land, For Power, Forever"

I guess this go-round they are focusing on the size and not the persistence? Even though they seem to be hammering both. /shrug

No, I don't find it rather dumb. I find it a bit cheeky and very applicable to the game. In PS1 and PS2 the size of the battles is mainly what it is about and this moto clearly presents this idea to people new to the idea of a MMOFPS.

The "For land, for power, forever" sounds very dated to me.

The Devs ought to send PSU a dozen beta keys. Then PSU run a Best PS2 Motto/Tagline contest in the forum :D The Devs will pick the best 12 entries.

Run the contest up to 1 week before closed beta. Maybe PS2 can even use the very best one in any future trailer :groovy:

They need to fix that bit right quick... incidentally, didn't know there was a tagline for the original game. Guess it was kind of like the backstory...

Who cares why we're here? We're red and they're blue and purple; none of us can ever really die, so let's fight to the death FOREVER!

IMO the size motto simply doesn't cut it.
It might be somewhat fun for those running around "hehe, penis, hehe" but
i'd like to have something on a more epic and patriotic scale than that.

In the end, i don't give rats, as it's only a motto :)
Just don't want CoD kiddies running around yelling "mine is bigger than yours"
every time after they killed me. I'd rather have someone yelling "For Power"
when they drop me :)

Size always matters ranks anywhere from mildly amusing to funny for a lot of people, but it'll have gotten old by release. It's cool until then though.

I voted for the old motto, but to be honest, it'd probably be better to have something that'd make people identifiable as Planetside players would be good. Bonus points if it can be put on a shirt with out sounding cheesy out of context, or if it's good to chant as a crowd at E3/Fan Faire etc.

For example, if I'm wearing an Alliance shirt and someone says "For the Horde!", I know exactly what they mean. If I'm wearing an NC shirt, I can't imagine someone reciting "For land, for power, forever" in my general direction, or "Size Always Matters", for that matter.

It's marketing. The number 1 key feature that separates PS2 from games like BF3 and CoD is it's size, more vehicles, more players, more space etc. It's not about what sounds cool it's about what sells.

Size always matters is all about the Scales of planetside 2 even planetside 1 was a skirmish game compare to planetside 2 we talk about 2000 players not 300 !

And this motto is about the scales of the game only to show people thas planetside is about Massive scales !

because for most people shooters are shooters no matter whats and people must understand thats the only way to experience a scales like this is in planetside 2

So SIze always matter fit perfectly in thats marketing optic !

For land for power forever do not make a huge point of the scales and its more confusing for new people to the franchise !

Anyway my own Motto is »» Failure is not an option ««« and the old ps1 motto is also true for planetside 2 but the marketing is mostly around the scales and it must be thats way ! For now

Yes, Stew... that's the whole joke about it...

I'd prefer "Size does matter." over "Size always matters."

Simply sounds better and seems more logical. Size wouldn't matter in every game at any time. It does however in an MMO.

They shouldn't exaggerate it though. Maybe in 2 few more teasers, and that's it then.

It's still funny now, but not for long.

"For Land. For Power. Forever." was a great tagline for Planetside 1. It emphasized the strongest, most unique point about Planetside at the time, in the market it emerged from. Persistence was a big deal, and nobody else really had it in a PvP environment.

Persistent PvP doesn't stand out as much anymore, since there are other games that offer it. EVE, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Perpetuum Online, even Global Agenda can be argued to have it.

"Size. Always. Matters.", on the other hand, definitely highlights Planetside 2's stunning achievement. The biggest PvP game from a "size of battles" perspective I can think of are things like Battlefield or Pirates of the Burning Sea, which support on the order of 25-50ish players per side. And Planetside 2 blows that away by an order of magnitude. That's significant. That stands out. And you should highlight your strengths when marketing.

Size. Always. Matters. Feels like someone tried really hard to hit a sexual inuendo while at the same time making the game appear to be shallow.

People get it, the game is huge. The catch phrase isn't going to be that lightbulb over their head that goes "Oh so 1000s of people on a battlefield."

It makes it sound like PS2 is saying "Hurrdurr, Zergfest!!!!"

Even if the game is to be a massive zergfest of throwing bodies against each other (which I hope not...) do we really want to advertise it like that?

I seriously just can't express how lame "Size. Always. Matters." is. It feels like someone forgot to do their job and on the last minute someone said "oh yeah what's our catch phrase?"

Like, I see that catchphrase show up at the end of the trailer and I forget how excited I am to play the game for a brief moment. It's that bad.

Maybe it's because I'm a big Star Wars nerd, but I look at it as a counter to Yoda's, "Size matters not."

Everything about this game is huge, and they've got to push it. Like CoD? BF? Then check out PS2 because it's bigger and better.

Not a fan of the new motto, if that is what it shall be. A one off tag for a video and it's quirky and light hearted.

As an ongoing phrase it feels too quirky. Like something I would expect at the end of YouTube-Battlefield Heroes Trailer 2008.

IMHO - something with a bit more gravity and less smirk factor would mesh better with advertising PS2's epic scale. :(

So, at least to me....I preferred the old but would welcome a different new one equally.

Smirk factor. I like that. You need to remember they're shooting for roughly the same level of seriousness as Team Fortress 2. Smirk factor, as you might call it, is not out of place here. I think making the game's tagline a dick joke with no subtlety is pretty tacky, but having a game where you cover yourself in little hearts and put spinnas on your tank take itself too seriously would be pretty out of place, too.

For Land. For Power. Forever. Is a powerful statement.

As far as size goes.

"It's not the size of the DOG in a fight, it's the size of the fight in the DOG"

But I would support the following statement .

For Land. For Power. For Greed. Excluding God, For Land. For Power. For Greed. is the cause of most wars. And Planetside is about War. Never ending, vicious, cycled death.

Thats what brings people into FPSMMOs - Not the Size of a map or the number of people. (Note: Number of People does help though ) But is not the only thing that attracts FPS player to a game.

Anything but " Free to Play. Your Way.™ "

Which I remember seeing a few places around the pre-E3 screenshots, but luckily it didn't seem to be front and center, but rather was replaced with size always matters for the main trailer.

Some people say that Free to Play. Your Way.™ is the global SOE F2P tag line, fine whatever but keep that away from Planetside because it made me cringe 100 times more then any innuendo ever did.

Size Always Matters is fine. The thing is, PS2 is fairly "generic" if you ignore the scale. That's not a bad thing inherently but the game's motto should should focus on the USP. BF3 and many other games have combined arms warfare and classes and persistance isn't exactly a rare thing in today's shooters.

The only other aspect they could play up is the persistant battlefield but its hard to convey that in a single sentance.
