After a few hours of festivities courtesy of the PS1 hardcore group, my ideal July 1st goes like this:
1. Devs transport all players to one of the sanctuaries without warning.
2. After 5 minutes of everybody going WTF!!, all spawns get disabled and an Orbital Strike kill's everyone in one shot, with the name on the OS being "Planetside 2".
3. An announcement, "Dear Planetside citizens and warmongers, the Gemini server will be shut down for forever in 5 minutes."
4. After a short wait, just to build tension, another announcement, "The Planetside 2 beta server is live, please go download the client and enjoy - Love SOE and the PS2 Development team."
That would be the best day evar!
It would be really cool if they could make the OS charge up slowly over the whole five min, but I wouldn't expect them to spend time on something like that though. Kinda like one last epic Orbital Strike. The end of days OS.

I'd say after the huge day of festivities is over, the SoE Devs reroute everyones recall point to be Old Oshur and disable guns. Effectively making everyone's sanctuary the same point, this is when all the CR5s online (or maybe give everyone CR5?) group up (all three factions) are able to place their OSes and have the biggest tri-faction OSathon in the history of the game. Dozens maybe even 1 or 2 hundred OSes shot off all at the same time.
Oh man.
Yeah, it'd be a great move to shut down PS1 servers while people have active subs, and then to open a beta that not everyone is in!

It would be neat to have something like this happen. I hate to be Debbie Downer and all about it but I doubt they will just throw everyone off of PS1 when closed beta starts... Maybe for open beta, or even better launch day, they can do something like this..... They're going to phase people into closed beta....

This would be awesome. Too bad I don't have an active Planetside 1 subscription...

Bags, quit pooping on my daydreams. You know it would be awesome...just bask in the awesome :)
I'd love it, but I'm sure there's some people not looking forward to PS2 at all.

This ^^^
Except that after the mass OS, everyone respawns in sanc again and the announcement reads:
"The Hart Express Shuttle departs for PS2 Beta in 10 minutes! All aboard!!!"
Everyone rushes to the Hart building and stands around nevously twitching, watching the timer, while waiting for the door to open. After what seems like an eternity, the door opens and everyone floods in. Once aboard, it takes off to the heavens and fades to black instead of taking you to the map and then a large shiny button appears reading:
"The future starts now!"
You click on the link and the beta begins to download. The rest is history.

My ideal July first is where beta has already started on June 20th at 9:43PM PST and I'm just logging in for another awesome round of beta testing amazement.
Of course... I haven't played PS1 so I'm not as sentimental about it. ;)

I would find that a little too bitter sweet. Would be sad to not know the end was coming until five minutes lol

Pretty similar, except I'd have the devs secretly roll the PS2 beta download into a PS1 patch update.
Obviously it'd be massive compared to PS1, but I can dream.
After the festivities an announcement appears:
"Emergency deployment! All players proceed to the HART".
Everyone piles in.
The HART ascends into the atmosphere gracefully for one last time.
The Global Map appears.
It suddenly fills with static.
Disappears.
And is replaced by the brand new Auraxis global map from PS2.
You select a respawn point and click drop.
BOOM!
You're now descending through the heavens in PlanetSide 2 beta.

I like this idea too, would require a ton of coding, but cool none the less.

Would be cool as long as all active Planetside 1 subscribers got into closed beta at the same time. Anyone know how many active Planetside 1 subscribers there are atm?

I do know there are a lot of NEW subscribers to PS1 cause I've helped several understand the game mechanics... Not certain that matters cause we still don't know exactly how the PS1 players will be phased into closed beta. We do know that if you have a PS1 sub you are auto-enrolled into closed beta.

I went back and it seems pretty busy, only one continent active at a time though.

you have to have PS2 installed on your computer before you can even think about playing it first, and myself i would hate them to close down PS1,until at least PS2 goes live

Sadly, we just didnt have many weekends to do this event. We basically had this upcoming one, and the one after. We chose the one after, Sundays usually have the best turn out.
Regardless, the whole event will be streamed and put on Twitch, so you can still watch it!
