Wouldn't you think open beta would include all 3 conts? I guess they could be working OT to get the other 2 done but we haven't seen much of those yet.

it really depends on how they do it, theres 2 sorts of open beta's:

1: a marketing drive for people to try the game and build hype
2: large scale stress testing.

i think they would only use open beta for testing say a week-2 prior to launch to test their final server functionality, at that point id expect everything to be pretty much ready to go. they wont want to do an extended beta open beta because that means heaps of people trying the game, but nobody paying, giving the turnover rate of F2P games, this would be a bad idea for open beta to be going for awhile. using open beta as marking for a F2P game i see as been pointless too.

when i say open beta i mean: anybody can play.

id expect the game to be in closed beta, NDA dropped for the most part.

Well not only that. There is also the burnout factor. I mean we are not talking about a heaping amount of content at launch right? 3 conts? Spend too much time in beta and you have pretty much experienced it all and for a lot of people that might just be enough and move on.

yea exactly. they will want to keep the beta as small as possible. but enough to fill a whole 6000 slot server prettymych 24/7 for a long period(say 1-2 weeks) to test how things flow...if they dont then i think the game could be in for some problems because world pvp games do really need extended testing.

Yes... Yes, I was here at that point in time. I was here when PS1 started to decline and fans yearned for PS2, with no indication from SOE that it would ever come... I fail to see what it has to do with this though. If that is how you feel when Smed says there's an announcment coming, don't get exited over it. That is the easiest way of not being pessimistic!

This game's been getting no press compared to the rest of the E3 titles, especially for what it deserves. It's barely been making a dent in most general gaming forums *Planetside 2 specific forums don't count*

Most people still haven't even heard of it, or immediately go "SOE game? LOL, wutever."

In their defense, if the first wave of slobbering baboons crashes the servers, it might take longer than planned to want the beta ready for additional cannon fodder to join the fight. In the development world, failing to deliver on the date you promised, especially when people get to play your game, is akin to the player base sentencing you to hanging from the gallows by barbed wire. Morons love to take simple mistakes to the extremes of injustice, and will not hesitate to march towards the furthest frontiers of the internet to slander SOE's name.

I was hoping for Beta Has Begun! but instead we got a thank you letter tied up with a few details about how they want to implement the beta process in order for us to better help them with it.

Over all it means Beta Soon! (tm). In more detailed words.

The message we got was pretty much "Beta is imminent, but we will never publicly reveal the exact time frame and stages of the closed beta." If you read between the lines, they are essentially saying that players will start trickling into closed beta in the next week or so, if they aren't already trickling in at this moment.

Just remember that not every vet or PCGamer key holder will get in at once. It's going to be a ramp up over several weeks or months. This is a totally different sort of "soon" compared to before. Previously, we were waiting for beta to start, with the knowledge that even after it started it may still be quite a while before any specific one of us actually got in. Now, beta is pretty much here. For me, it is a lot nicer to be waiting to get in, at least knowing that the process has finally started.

If it were just us and the dev team, maybe they would. But it's SOE corporate and the press/new players as well. All closed betas are hush hush, so I'm cool with it being vague.
