View Full Version : Does anyone remember their first hour?

Like the thread says, does anyone remember their first hour of Planetside?
I bought the game after reading about it. I knew nobody who played the game so I had no expectations whatsoever. I chose Vanu for the sole reason that they were the low population on the server and logged in.
I spawned in the Sanc with no idea what to do, and I saw in chat "outfit recruiting blah blah blah". I thought to myself "okay, this might help me get a feel of what I am supposed to do", so I asked if I can join. It was a small group of about 10 people. Me and two other members hopped in a Lib and ran off to join a fight. It turned out that those two members were a boyfriend/girlfriend couple and we ended up going through countless games together (EQ, WOW, SWG, etc).
I am still friends good with them today, and our first action in PS2 will be to jump in a lib and go find trouble!

Like you I remember reading the chat seeing outfits recruiting, people requesting to squad etc. I remember doing some of the virtual training & then squading up with some other people and just queuing outside the elevator which led to the HART shuttle. There must have been around 30 people just waiting for it to come. Then the action started & I was hooked from there. :D

Played TR on Markov with a buddy of mine. First kill? 3 TKs while gunning for a Prowler.

I recall my first few minutes. Not much of the first significant amount of time.
Stepped out of the spawn tube. Heard the TR sanc music. Stepped outside. Saw the HART coming in. Thought "Wow."
Like Mastermind I had zero expectations - picked up the game on a whim!

I do, but it's not more than 2 years ago for me.
I had no clue what to do or where to go, but I noticed that hey, there's an instant action button! Great! I press that and there was like.. 1 guy backhacking in Exctinction with some other fellas, enough to great a hot spot anyways. So, I was thrown there to the nearest tower. I ran around, all alone no clue where to go, I couldn't see anyone. For the first hour I did not even find anyone there. It was sort of a miracle I kept on playing the game :D I was on a trial too I think so I hadnt even paid for the game, so just dropping it there would've been possible..
Later that day though I got into a really amazing fight on Forseral that really blew my mind. I was busy studying into university entry exams, and I couldnt focus at all cos I was thinking like "damn.. i wanna go check out the fight again". I had a whole month off before the exam so I was just home and studied.. it was really cool to see the same fight evolve base by base over the course of like.. 10 hours or so that day.

I heard about it on a small website for old, salty MMO diehards (of which I am not) and I tried a free trial back in December '03. I had a lot of trouble getting it to work because my mobo's sound drivers conflicted and caused the game to crash. I had to disable sound entirely in order to play, which in a game like this is pretty detrimental to the play experience. Still had a blast, though, and when I first looked at the clock it was 5 am and I'd been playing 10 hours.
I eventually bought a seperate sound card just so I could play the game.
My first hour consisted of going into sanc getting agile+surpressor gold ammo. I instant actioned to Cyssor and I ran around for a long time before finding a random enemy. I got killed, but dear god my heart was pounding.

Totally remember.
Got it because someone told me before it was out, in Feb '03, that it could be great, soon after launch, I bought it, installed/blabla, spawned, get in sanc watching chat reminding me of EQ MMO with tons of people running around me, not understanding fuck all, I receive a random invite to a squad, accept, it appears to be from the SL in the galaxy just in front of me, I get in, I am told we are going to be "hotdropped on a tower" (wtf is that? oO).
We fly over a snow continent (since then, I know it was Esamir), I've no clue how we got there, pilot keeps giving ETAs, at some point the SL writes "GOGOGO", I get pushed out of the plane (wtf wtf!!), I land just in front of a door doing a strange "tiindiin" noise, a guy next to me wips out a strange pistol and shoots a laser at the door, which opens after a while, SL shout again "GOGOGO" (too much CS, maybe), I get out my almighty suppressor, hectic fight, I die in seconds, get revived while trying to type something in chat, fight again, die again....
We finally get the tower. I respawn there, get out... giant snowy plain, covered with soldiers and robots, missiles and bullets going all over me, planes, tanks. Far away, the walls of the target base visible from behind a ridge. I think it's at this point I relaxed, realized how tense I had been since getting in this galaxy, and smiled while rushing toward the base.

I do. Instant action spawned me near Ghannon on Hossin. First encounter with the NC, I recall thinking as I got raped that I was glad I didn't pick that ugly looking yellow and blue armour. In your face NC.
I waited for Broadband b4 I got PS, day after I got broadband PS was installed.
Anyone remember that tutorial combat training thing...

Listened to NC sanc music for the first ten minutes as I ran around in sanc, checked out the VR (then said "screw you training missions, I know how to play video games").
Instant actioned to I believe the Rehua tower on Searhus - it was some tower on Searhus, can't remember which. Around the edge though, not in the crater. Pulled out one of the preset favorites that had a Gauss rifle in it and proceeded to die loads of times. Went back to sanctuary, tried to get the Gauss loadout again but misclicked and stayed in Standard with a Suppressor and MagScatter.
Proceeded to play around with favorites and the equipment terminals.
Then I saw "Armor Piercing" ammo. OH MAN I'M GOING TO KICK SO MUCH FACE.

Some good memories posted here.
My first 2 hours were spent running around trying to figure out where the hell everybody was. I remember telling me wife "This game is AWESOME, but I can't seem to find anybody." There were 2 pop-locks at the time, I just didn't know how to get to them.

I still remember my first hour. It was back in 2003 when I first logged into the game and choose the NC. I picked them at the time because they where my high school colors. Anyways, I proceeded to log into the game only to find myself standing in the spawn tubes. I spent about the first 10 minutes listening to the sanc music while running around looking at everybody's gear. After some time of mindlessly roaming I eventually made my way into the Hart building while looking at another players gear who was out in front of me. He had Rexo on at the time and I was thinking to myself "Dam that looks awesome, where can I get me some like that."
I eventually followed the guy onto to the hart and podded into a huge battle going on at the time on Cyssor. As I was coming down I could see the fight raging below me and I was in utter awe at its beauty. Just as my pod landed on top of the spot where it looked like all the fighting was happening I hopped out pulled out my Gauss Rifle and was like " Fuck yeah, lets get some". No more than half a second later I took a shell from a TR prowler to the face. What a way to receive a welcome to Planetside noob. After that I spent the next few hours fighting in between Faro and Gunuku and well the rest is history.

Friend said i have to check it out. He guided me around so i got into hart then dropped. Whoooo. OMG that's awesome. Droppod landed and opened. Vanguard ran over me :(
PC had 256 MB ram. It was a slideshow, not an FPS. So i looted the nearest PCs memory to play.

My first hour of beta consisted of me trying to run across the entire of Esamir north to south to get to the continent the fight was on (no broadcast warp gates in those days, and no bundled vehicle certs).
Before I even got to Jarl I heard the whine of engines - the outfit I had spent the past 6 months putting together on the forums had arrived to pick me up in a Gal complete with fighter escort.
Nine years on my Vindicators are still going strong.

Loaded up, created my character, jumped out of spawn tube, loaded up with a rifle and instant actioned to Hossin. Got lost in the tower for a moment and started running towards the base the VS was taking and I get sneak attacked by a Prowler.
Respawn at Sanc, try again, this time running outside and witness the HART, take the HART back to Hossin and get sniped by two snipers working together.
Respawn at the tower again, run up to the top getting my first kill against a cloaker, and jump into a turret and realize I love turrets. Especially flak turrets. Two galaxies kind of love flak turrets :)

Retail release.
I remember loading gauss with gold ammo and footzerging half the length of solsar before a kind harraser driver stopped and picked me up.
Took me a couple of months to figure out gold ammo = useless, who would have thought armour piercing ammo was worthless against people wearing armour........... soe logic.

The following occurred in beta, so some time in early 2003 I suppose. I certed to drive a Marauder and a high school buddy of mine got into the gunner seat. We rolled out through one of the warp gates. I can't remember which continent we went to, except that the ground was green. I think it was Cyssor, but I don't know if that was linked to the TR sanctuary back then.
At any rate, we started rolling down one of the roads from the warpgate to a tower. The sense of scale was already amazing, and I could tell the game would be special. We started approaching a trio of NC soldiers. I don't know what they were doing there, as we weren't at the tower yet, but we obviously weren't going to wait around to ask questions. I circled around them and my gunner did the only good thing a person can do with a member of the NC; he exterminated them.
Unfortunately, that is the end of what I remember explicitly. We continued on to the tower and dismounted to go in, but I can't remember what happened after that. I suppose the fact that I recall even as much as I do after nine years is a testament to how impressionable that first experience was.

On May 22, 2003, I made my first and favorite character on TR Markov (WarbirdTheDisturbed). I think I managed to walk into the HART shuttle and dropped as close as I could to the biggest hotspot I could find. The base was Enkidu, Ishundar and we were about to be attacked by the VS. I ran into the base, thinking, "Woah, this game is huge! Look at all the places I can go in this base!"
So, occupied with exploring a massive base under attack, I managed to get up to the roof and out to the walls, just in time to see a VS quasar max running full speed and jumpjetting up on top of the wall. It shot my face off.
After respawning in the base (another new experience and exploration opportunity) I managed to get outside just in time to see a ton of our Prowlers and Reavers arriving at the base and pushing the VS back out. The courtyard filled with vehicles as we prepared to take the fight to the enemy, and I jumped into a passenger seat on a Galaxy. And so I experienced my first Gal drop and tower cap, and became hooked for years.
With Planetside 2 quickly approaching, I hope that I can pass along that kind of experience to the next generation of Planetsiders, because it is absolutely unmatched by any other game. That is why, as an officer in my returning clan/outfit, we will be focusing on Airborne Infantry hotdrops.. It really might be the coolest part of the Planetside experience.

I remember my first hour like it was yesterday even tho it was a good 7 years ago at least! We were sitting on one hill spawning from a few AMS's while the NC were on the hill opposite us spawning from a few of their AMS's.
Snipers and max suits everywhere, and me running round with my suppressor with gold AP ammo trying to shoot things, i think that entire day i never got one kill, but i loved it just the same!

A co-worker had told me about the game, and an EQ guildie had bought it, so I jumped. Came home after work on a Tuesday, installed the game and patched on my 56k modem, picked the same server as the coworker and decided I wanted to be a ranger type character...long distance living off the land sniper type. This was late-may 03, I think? maybe early June?
Drop into combat from the HART with my agile armor + sniper rifle, and can't figure out where anyone is, landing on Esamir, and I see action half the continent away.
For 45 minutes I hoofed it cross country, hiding behind trees and expecting at any time to die. The tension mounted, and then I finally saw my first Vanu taking a tower. I hid behind a tree, scoped up, took a shot...and then saw him not die, and got swarmed by mossies, reavers, and magmowers.
I respawned in Sanc, and realized this wasn't going to be your standard FPS. I was hooked.

2006, about 6-8 weeks into the Reserves fodder/trial program, my friend told me that he was playing this "Planetside" game since you could now play it for free for a year. I'd had practically no experience with online gaming, but Planetside sounded like the kind of game I'd always wanted, so I gave it a try as well.
He told me that NC was the empire to join (otherwise my choice would've probably been TR, rapid-firing guns ftw!!!), so I made one and somehow joined him at a fight on a snow continent, must've been Ceryshen.
We were at a tower that was near, but not quite at the center of the action of the nearby base fight. (In retrospect, I think it was most likely Igaluk South Tower.) I mainly tried to pick off targets from the various outside levels of the tower, ran around the rocks outside, fired Phoenixes at grunts like a pr0, and pecked at enemy Prowlers while avoiding them seeing me.
Other vivid memories include slooowwly sneaking around friendly mines at doorways as I didn't know they wouldn't blow up on me, taking out some of those nasty Spitfire Turrets (and being disappointed to not even get any kill stats or XP rewarded for that feat), and getting hopelessly lost inside a base after spawning there and trying to find my way back up top.
At the end of my first day, my K/D ratio was 1/4. And I was totally hooked.

For me Planetside started in beta a few weeks before launch in 2003.
Randomly running around for 30 minutes or so I ended up on Ceryshen only to get lost and fall to my doom off the cliff. I spawned at the North Akna tower and ran to the base. Finding the back door I opened it to be greeted by a long corridor... with a sniper at the end. I was completely clueless and died about 4 times before logging off thinking it wasn't that brilliant a game.
Later I came back and again running around randomly I ended up on Ishunder. For the first time I saw more then two people. There was about 30 other clueless people running south so I followed them. Approaching Girru from the northeast I found myself part of a massive Vanu footzerg. We had an AMS and the tower and there must of been 100 people attacking the base with explosions and gunfire everywhere!
In a moment I knew this was the best game ever without question.

It was Late May 2003, and I was talking about video games with a co-worker friend. I was playing quite a bit of CounterStrike at the time, and I had cut my MMO teeth with Everquest a couple years earlier. I remember the conversation word for word. I lamented "I wish there was a fps like CounterStrike, but in a huge world like Everquest with tanks and planes and stuff. Wouldn't that be cool?" He replied, "I think they have that."
My jaw dropped and I stopped dead in my tracks. "Wait, what?"
"Yeah, it's called Planet-something."
I immediately looked it up on the computer and then went to Best Buy after work that day to get it.
I still clearly remember sitting there in front of the computer as the game was isntalling, reading through the manual, trying to decide which empire to join. I considered myself a bit of a rebel, so the choice became clear. NC it was.
I've been laughing reading these stories, because I had a similar experience once I got in the game. Ran around sanc. Loved music. Went into VR. Loaded up on gold ammo.
It's funny. I don't remember my first fight, but I do remember my first "real" fight. It was on Amerish. We were pushing on Cetan from Ikanam. The fight lasted for hours and was a back and forth brawl. I remember fighting tree by tree. Trying to push up both flanks, and up the middle. It was such an epic experience, I knew gaming would never be the same for me. I was hooked, and no other game has come close to delivering that epic feel. No other game until Planetside 2, that is.

day 1 of open beta
did the training, someone in TR Sanc was screaming to get to whatever base, took the HART.
landed near the base and saw 30 Barneys running towards me.
felt my gut drop.
Did some quick math ... realised I didn't have enough bullets and took off!!
didn't stop running till I saw a TR MAX
So anyway after the MAX killed me ... :)

logged in , messed with the options a bit.
walked out of the spawn building and see about 8 gals sitting there loading up people and vehicles + air support. oh god it looked so awesome.
yelled " hey guys can i come along?" got invited, made war.
i also shat myself about 20 times in the first hour purely because of the awesomeness of it all.

I remember it very clearly.
I didn't like first person shooters. I thought they were diversions for bloodthirsty retarded children. But the idea of an online *war* complete with support roles excited me, so I followed the news through beta and pre-ordered as the live date approached.
The first thing I did was read the user's guide. I'm a technical writer by trade so I understood the importance of Reading The Fucking Manual. Then I dropped into sanc and chose instant action.
I materialized somewhere outside a huge wall surrounded by trees, near this boxy blimpy minivan with some kind of Romulan cloaking field around it, and saw something on the ground. Naturally I ran over and looked at it. BANG says the mine. *BLEAAARGH* goes my avatar. HOLY FUCK says I, and laughed. Maybe that was karma at work, because I wound up certing CE almost at once, and have considered myself an engie first and foremost ever since....
I ran around a bit and got shot by people I never even saw, then the AMS blew up and I found myself in a nearby tower. I ran up all the way to to the top get the best possible view, and saw a SOLID COLUMN of people dressed like heavily armored Cub Scouts running like motherfuckers towards the tower. My involuntary reaction was AHHH IT'S THE COPS! WE'RE BEING RAIDED! And then had to privately laugh at myself again.
We held the tower, I recall, but I didn't do much except peer around and try to stay out of everybody else's way. I spent the first hour of Planetside as an armed spectator, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

First day.. i tried out a few weaons in VR, then made a loadout that had the punisher, assuming the fact it had an underslung grenade launcher would make it badass.. well i was a noob. Then joined a random squad on sanc, who got on a gal, flew off to cyssor ( i think) and then did a few tower drops to train people what to do, before going off to fight proper. I was only on abou 2 hours cos then I had to go down the pub. :)

My housemate was playing in the beta. He beckoned me to his room one evening to show me this cool new game he was playing. I watched in awe at the immense base zerg he was part of, then he got up and let me have a go.
From then on it was a blur, but I eventually realised that the sun was coming up and Mike was long since asleep. I thought it best to leave it there, and sneaked off to my room to catch some sleep. But not before preordering and signing up to the beta myself.

I don't remember what server it was (want to say Markov) but I made a TR and wound up at a fight somehow. It was basically a half-an-hour slide show because my computer at the time was in no shape to even remotely handle the game. Unfortunately I had to put the game away for a year or so until I was able to get a new rig and try again.

I installed the game at the insistence of a friend who had played for a few weeks after launch. I had no idea what to do but I grabbed a NC Falcon Max, got into a Gal at Sanc and hot dropped on a base on Solsar. I landed on the base wall just as an enemy gal flew low over the base. I spammed my Falcon on the Gal and blew it to little pieces, getting my first 8 kills. Good times.
I had just got out of the Army and taking a short break before finding a new job. I've only heard of Planetside with a couple advertisements in magazines but found it on the games shelf at a store that doesn't exist anymore. I didn't start playing till month and a half after release.
I give it a try, first making an NC character in a Sparrow MAX. I kept wondering why I was running out of ammo all the time till I figured out that those little boxes are for additional boxes of ammo. That was on Konreid. I created the character I use today on Emerald shortly after and continued to play that one ever since.

In my first hour I was in a tower next to base, using /b to demand passing aircraft to "identify themselves" and firing on them if they did not respond. They were probably all friendly.
On the first day I would use HART (15 min timer) to capture all tower on empty Ishundar, using drop-hack-recall in pyama's and with surpressor.
It took me several weeks to figure out I could press r to reload.
I would spawn a new Lightning every time the clip was empty.

Reading all the stories like these always makes me sad about what I was missing out on for so long.
My internet gaming experience took a long break around the time DSL started becoming normal and I was still limping along on 48.8 dial up. I recall around having good times in Tribes around '99-'01 and then trying Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six around '02 and getting wrecked. FINALLY upgraded to DSL around the time CC hit. I recall seeing it in a store and thinking no fucking way i'm paying $15 a month for any game, and I picked up a game called Universal Combat. Basically it was single version of Planetside on Steroids and overly complicated and kinda buggy. Years later I worked with a guy I played Tribes with who got introduced to PS. He came in going on and on about the epicness and chaos and playing that first night until it started getting light outside and he realized he needed to go to work.
So I DL'd PS and got in game. Same as many I went into VR shot a couple weapons and thought "pshaa I know how to play video games" So I clicked on instant action from the menu and ended up on Ishundar. I recall grabbing a Harasser and driving around aimlessly for what must have been over an hour, came across a purple base, I jumped out of the driver seat, sneak up to the front door heart pounding. Hack the door get inside and proceed to sneak around the whole base, hiding in corners then sprinting behind a boxes in the basement and running from one hallway to the next, expecting someone to jump out from a corner the whole time. I eventually made it to the CC (I think it must have been Hanish wile the Fight was at Baal) I wait, nothing, pull out the REK to hack the base... and there was no link. After getting into the actual fight and getting killed, I recall my feelings at being able to choose from several different options for re-spawn and being protected and the spawn room/terms being kinda protected being an awesome. No getting sniper camped at random spawn points, able to take some time get my stuff together go AFK for a beer in relative safety.
I do recall circling a CY in the Harasser spamming VNG till someone jumped in and being possibly the worst driver in the history of the game and being responsible for killing a good handful of gunners. I will blame them, however for jumping into a Harasser being driven by a Graybie.

Planetside 1. I was a bit unsure whether to pay and play. A friend said "what the heck, let's give it a try." So in 2003, just a week after its release we signed up. It took awhile to configure and trying of various characters. Learning curve wasn't that difficult, just a little tedious. The tech tree was a pain, and the weapon capabilities of each faction seemed over and under balanced. All in all, we got used to it, and enjoyed the game. Then we decided to form our own Clan, or Guild, whatever it was called then. Thus "Old Farts" in the Terran Republic on the Markov server was born.
We enjoyed the game despite its limitations, until those battle bots were created, and kind of took the fun out the game play. To make a long story short, we just decided the game was getting a bit stale, and the "Old Farts" decided time for a change.
Old Farts didn't entirely go away though. We just settled on the Velen Server of World of Warcraft right after that game started up, and it's still going strong.
Anyway, that's it in a nutshell, Now to see how this new version of Planetside will shape up is anyone's guess. We shall see. All in all I believe the game was pretty fun, intense at times, but basically fun, despite its limitations. Hawk and Vongar (me) had good fun teaming up in the Terran Tank. I drove, he gunned, and we a grand time destroying everything in sight. And we were very good doing that.
Enough reminiscing. Take care all, and thanks for listening. maybe we'll see some of you on Planetside 2. Time will tell.

I ran around in Agile with a Punisher, loaded with rockets, for my first session or two. I was so happy when I finally killed someone, as I had been getting insta-killed (or so it felt back than) up until than.
I remember that first kill being outside, the guy was running up a hill and I was running down and I hit him dead on. He must've been near dead from a previous encounter, but I didn't know much about how it all worked at the time.

my first hour was all the way back in April 2003 and what I recall of it was finding some of my clan mates hopping into a Galaxy and setting out to retake Forseal from the NC, we arrived over the tower next to the base and everyone hotdropped but me and the pilot had to land to let me out lol... I hadn't a fing clue what I was doing :D
Pretty much spent the rest of that day being equally as terrible at everything while very slowly learning the ropes from my friends while we were involved in massive battles the like of which I'd never seen or experienced before. :D
I remember it vividly. It was when I previewed the game in San Diego and played along side the devs, I owned Smed and won the box set of Band of Brothers. :p

I don't but I do remember glimpses of moments that stood out, I guess my first hour wasn't one of them.
Taking out long streams of enemy in forests before being brought down, things like that I remember. Holding against massive odds 3-4 to 1, some of those moments I remember. Stepping out into a huge battle, with weapons going off everywhere, feeling the epic scope of it all - only to be found in PS1 :).

I remember when I crested a hill and suddenly saw a Lightning at the bottom, I quickly took cover and went around the hill, taking cover behind some tree. I wanted to go that way so I decided to wait until it leaves. About a minute later when it was still there I realized that no one was in it...
I also remember a notice popping up on my screen out of the blue. I glanced at it, looked like a squad invite. I clicked Join/accept/whatever and promptly became a member of BHO (for about 10 minutes)

My first hour in planetside way back when consisted of running through the training missions and familerising myself with the controls...
However I do remember my first combat moments they consisted of me jumping into a Hart dropping down and splat run over by a magrider.. not a prob I spawned at a nearby tower equipped myself in my noob suit ran up the stairs and out the door and splat a magrider closes in.. so I respawned at an ams ran to equip terminal and splat magrider clipped me from half mile away never did like the VS after that day!!
Ohh and heres to hoping the mower of death's collision boxes are done correctly from day 1 in PS2 :D

I remember standing in the sanc warp gate in PJ's along side a MAX thinking wow this game is HUGE... back in 03 it was really something special, the first gal drop I did with a few other squads was amazing despite the single digit fps

:rofl:I totally remember my first hour.
I ran around sanc for a bit, finally found the Hart, dropped on to a continent (I think it was Cyssor and it was empty), ran for what seemed ages until I happened upon a base and got killed by a wall turret. After that I went back to sanc and went to the VR range to figure out what the hell I was doing:lol:
