View Full Version : Galaxy able to pick up vehicles

I remember back in the days of Battlefield:Vietnam one of the coolest things to do was using a Huey transport to pick up vehicles and fly them across the map for your buddies. That got me thinking about the possibility of galaxies being able to perform the same task. Am I the only one who thinks that would be awesome?

Maybe you should try to do a thread search first next time. ;p

Something is going to need to pick up vehicles. If you're in a tank on other side of map. Boy you in for a llllooonnnnnggggg drive. Since abandoning tanks in a game where they cost resources will only be a luxury for the resource rich.
Yeah but you know what they say ""Nothing in life is free."
If I'm a Gal pilot I'm not gonna haul a huge heavy tank halfway across the map for free y'know!

I really hope they have a serperate limit on every vehicle in the gal. For example, 1 prowler/magrider/whatever the hell the NCs MBT is called limit should not apply for flashes(that is, if the galaxy can transport main battle tanks). Also, two questions.
1) Could you fit airborne vehicles in the galaxy in Planetside 1? Sure it's useless but it's COOL.
2) Could you drop the ground vehicles from a certain elevation and not have them explode?
EDIT: Just thought of something, how about we have a few variations of Galaxies that we can have? Kind of like the different max variations.

Ha! I forgot about that game! That was fun hooking up a tank with a chopper. You handled like a boat when you did but it got the job done. Alas they said the galaxy would NOT be able to carry vehicles.

Can you actually provide a prooflink? Because I though the last thing they said was that the ability is "being discussed". (PM me if it gets locked before you answer).
I mean, I don't see prowler fitting into the galaxy. Anyway, Higby (I think) said that they were planning to add Lodestar (check the wikilink) postlaunch to carry heavy vehicles, and it might above all act as a ground vehicle terminal.

I'm pretty sure customisation will allow us to have Galaxy Troop Transport, and Galaxy Gunship as variations, so no need for adding variants where you can simply customise the original.
I think its for sure that it Has MAX slots, Vehicles , i dont know.

In PS, a Galaxy could carry a light vehicle. In PS2, people will be able to cert into the same; the devs have said it will be something that can be certed into.
Larger vehicles such as tanks were carried by a vehicle called the Lodestar, which resembled a large shoebox with fins.

If the galaxy ends up having vehicle transport capabilities, and I'm thinking under the tail hookup ala Halo, not in a hold loading ala PS1 (though graphically that would be less intensive on systems,) I'd like to know if I can spawn a tank, park it, grab a gal, then pick up my tank and haul it. While it is resource intensive, I can imagine how cool it would be to get a mission to deliver a tank to someone in the field, and get reimbursement as a reward for completing the task.
Realistically, I expect people to jaunt a short ways towards the nearest tube, despawn, then respawn somewhere where they can procure a tank, even though it may be some distance away. Just this way, the individual can stay on the front lines while the support minded players handle supplying the front line with rolling devastation.
Mind you, the tank would likely be limited to what the delivery pilot is capable requisitioning, so it would probably still be in the intended drivers best interest to at least return to base, grab their tank, then ask for a pilot to transport them.
Hrm... of course this idea begs another question: if I requisition any vehicle, is there any way for other players to commandeer my tank if I grant them access to? I'm thinking my idea is half dead in the water XD The tank purchasing and supplying part anyway. One word: certifications.

Ignoring the fact that you're not likely to ever be in this situation (try to conceive of scenarios when this would occur-- they are very few and far between), the drive won't actually take that long.
If the maps are 8km by 8km, then the longest possible source to destination route (assuming a square map) is 11.3km. A Sunderer can travel this route in about ten minutes at 70kph. Tanks are probably going to be a bit slower (they don't have speedometers in the E3 footage, so it's hard to say exactly how fast they can move), but I would be surprised if they were more than 33% slower. As such, it is relatively safe to assume that a tank traversing the same route would arrive at the destination in no more than fifteen minutes.
That might sound like a long time, but the only time you will ever be making such a long drive is when your empire owns the entire continent, which returns to my opening thought, why would this scenario ever occur? The only reasonable occurrence I can think of is if you push one enemy faction back to their foothold and that faction leaves the continent completely, at which point you have to go to the other enemy's foothold (whom your faction has also pushed all the way back). But a warpgate to warpgate route isn't anywhere near the absolute maximum of 11.3km (using this map (http://s224245511.onlinehome.us/INDAR.jpg) as a reference); the greatest distance between two warpgates on Indar is only ~5.5km, givng a tank an estimated travel time of around seven minutes. Indeed, in all but the most contrived scenarios, you will never be driving for more than a few minutes to get back to the action. This is quite reasonable.
From the following stream Planetside 2 - Dual Commentary Livestream with Matt Higby and TotalBiscuit - YouTube it is stated that (timer at around 17:20+) the Galaxy will not have the ability to carry vehicles from the start.
They are currently thinking about adding it through certifications/customization but it seems like nothing has been concluded around this topic yet.

Ha wel lthat about settles that. Still think being able to pick up vehicles like in vietnam would be a blast. Though you could really exploit that.

I'm pretty sure I saw it somewhere more concrete than that... but either way I'm confident we'll see something lifting and transporting vehicles, particularly given the more... vertical nature of some of PS2's maps.

By your logic then you should pay pilots to escort you as well as pay any other engineer for repairs Oh and any ground AA keeping stuff off of you.
You forget this war isn't about 1 person but the whole army acting as one, if people become selfish there useless.

It should be able to carry Flash ATVs, maybe even Lightning tanks (for the Lightning case, it should sacrifice all other seats)

That seems a bit extreme.....If that was the case i dont think anyone would use the cert basically making it pointless to even have...

I think this will be more to do with Buggies or Lightnings. I think tanks are the focus of a ground push.
Or atleast if vehicles can be carried, they should have a lowered flight ceiling. and perhaps less armour. Or player seats?
Would be funny seeing 2 gals coming in, expecting 24 men. And getting 2 tanks on your ass instead.

Would be nice to have the lodey back, that's what Higby said in one interview, that they were thinking about it. Don't know what it's role would be if the gal can be speced to do this.
There was nothing like dropping AMS's and tanks behind the front lines for flanking in PS1.

I personaly think that it would a be a very nice idea to be able to cert into beeing able to carry vehicles, aslong as it's balanced(and by that i mean that a single vehicle should take like 6-8 infantry slots).

I personally would love to see it setup as the galaxy only carrying ATV's,Buggies, possibly lightning tank?? Assuming the tank fits this go around. They then could bring back the loadstar for the heavy carry (sunderer,MBT, lightning) except this time give it a better look other than the shoe box.
They could really streamline it into a C-130 type look. Allow the lodie to carry more than 1 vehicle this time also as I'm sure the dedicated lodie pilots would really like that. Tactical use it would be great for transporting heavy armor into captured territory way behind enemy lines with fewer loadstars.

When Jen and I sat down with Kevm0 out at SOE we toyed around with putting vehicles in the back of Galaxies (just to judge size) The lightning would not even fit in it (if it would it would be VERY close). He said it's possible it may happen someday as an additional cert.

I think galaxies should be able to pick up vehicles to a certain point.
Here are my thoughts. You WILL have to be certified in galaxy cargo (or what ever they choose to call it) to carry a vehicle.
Next they should have tiers of carrying capacity. Maybe the first tier can only carry a Flash. Then the next level can carry a two Flashes or a Sunderer. and then the final tier can carry a Lightning tank or two Flashes and Sunderer or two Sunderers.
I don't think it should ever be possible to carry the main battle tanks. (aka. Magrider, Vanguard, Prowler)

The sunderer is as big if not bigger than MBT's this go around. This is why Lodies aka lodestars need to make a return especially if they are going to allow us to transport vehicles again.

Your assuming that a ground vehicle will be able to take a straight line to it's destination, discounting any hills, cliffs, lakes, and other obstructions. Taking this into consideration, it could be only 1 or 2 kilometers away, but a much larger distance to navigate through.

I disagree. Lodestar looks like a flying brick. I don't like flying bricks, I had bad experience with them.
