No point in you naming what games didn't have a beta. I can name just as many that did have betas with specific dates being announced. There are plenty of games out there on both PC and Consoles that have scheduled beta tests.

Slapping "Beta" on the game's splash screen doesn't magically turn a Demo or a free week-end into a proper Beta. It's just there so that people excuse the current bugs and feel like 1337 exclusive VIP's instead of properly testing the game.

The BF3 "pre-release for pre-order owners demo" had how many patches again? None whatsoever.

The goal is honestly to support PlanetSide Day and get you guys in for some nostalgic game play.

The way that letter sounds they are only days, not months or weeks, but days away from finally letting us into the game for the first time. At least some lucky jerks will be in the game by the time we hit mid July.

And yes anything two and a half weeks or less is days not weeks, so don't try to get all technical on me.

Look at this way too . . . The stated they will be doing beta events before they do a 24/7 beta prior to launch. If thats the case, you can still do PS2 beta when the servers are up, rest of the time go back to PS1 just for the hell of it. Most likely what I'll be doing since I will not be getting involved in another game between now and release.

Wasn't the Liberator/Skyguard update prior to the Pounder getting gimped into being an AV MAX? I can't remember that clearly.

I'm sure we'll see announcements again as they approach open beta, but it looks they're going for the stealth mode, NDA approach to initial closed beta that is the standard for most companies.

Yeah, but being an exp beta tester myself for many games, for many years. No typical game related NDA will require you to not say you're in a closed beta. Even as far as talking about your impression (not given specifics) of the beta, though I usally hold those for feedback reports.

Either way, I've been very impressed with SOE/Planetside2 staff up to this point, and have complete faith in them. They have shown and proven to me at least to genuinely care about the PS community.

Those "news" are practically all bad. They pretty much say that they are in the internal beta (what everybody already knew) and that its gonna take a while till closed beta. Normally I would apreciate the information, but I dont like it because they had this strange "announcement" last week and I was actually looking forward to good news. Now I got bad news.

An announcement of upcoming news is good if you have GOOD news, if you have bad news, just dont say anything before spreading them, okay? That way, everyone is disappointed.

I can't remember ever seeing a company provide a specific Beta date (if it happens it must be rare). They do announce they are entering closed Beta (and that's effectively what we are doing today) but NDA's and dates are never made public.

I wish we could provide you more, but that's just not how game Betas are done unfortunately.

1) Planetside 1 vets // PC Gamer beta key holders
2) Those with a Twitter/Facebook/whatever Beta Key holders
3) Everyone else without a key and clicked 'sign up for beta.'

It's unlikely we'll announce "Hey we let X number of folks in" and dates are just not something that happens in modern game development. A date is a commitment and we take them seriously.
And that's understandable. It's just, with the buildup from last week (T-Ray's indication of a b-word, and your announcement of an upcoming announcement...), I expected that you guys said on Friday "Okay, we're good to fire up the external beta," and that the announcement this week would be "Good news, everybody, we just sent out the first thousand beta emails! If you didn't get one, don't panic, we've got several thousand [tens of thousands?] people in our priority pool, including veterans, PC Gamer keys, and the promotional keys we've been giving out, but we'll be ramping up our capacity as quickly as we're comfortable and able to hammer out server stability!"


That didn't sound like an unreasonable expectation, and so you can understand how "Good news, everybody, we're doing hardware testing and internal server stressing! Beta's coming soon!" looks underwhelming and a bit disappointing in comparison.


I honestly don't even think that your guys' excitement is unreasonable (and hence the buildup you guys did last week); it's just not what we, sitting on the outside and not privvy to the notion that you *haven't* done the hardware testing and whatnot already, were prepared to anticipate.

If there's a lesson to be learned here, it's probably simply that, even as open and transparent as you guys try to be, as far as we know at any given stage (including and especially for the last month or so!), you guys are mere days away from sending out beta invites. So no matter how exciting anything between now and that milestone is for you guys, keep in mind that it probably isn't what we think a big announcement is going to be. ;)


Edit to add one final point -- I hope this *isn't* considered "the closed beta announcement." Don't underestimate how encouraging it is to know that beta is actually going on, even if we don't know when the upcoming scheduled tests are, or even if we're not invited yet. Announcements like "Last weekend, we ran our first external closed beta playtest, and we hit 900 concurrent players on the server!" would be really exciting, and just the kind of info I'm sure everybody would love to see from the team that tweets screenshots of in-progress art assets and teases us with fantastic screenshots like Higby's jungle tweet or some utterly hilarious Clegg landings.

A pretty reasonable announcement IMO.


Some of the community is just determined to turn every newsbyte into a big emotional "ZOMG why no BETA yets?, I hates yoouse" stress-fest.

Personally I think the PS2 dev team are one of the best of the current breed, I appreciate the communication they provide and will take each piece of news as a piece of a puzzle rather than an opportunity to bemoan a lack of BETA invites ("when its done" is the best way, as long as they dont screw it up :evil:).

Also my thanks toRadarX for wading in this thread of enormity while maintaining a steady flow of reasonable responses.

I wanna say that I want to play this game as much as the next guy or gal, but I think y'all are forgetting what betas are about. Betas are made to iron out the kinks, test server strength, find compatibility issues and the like. I'm glad this game has so many people following it, and we'll all eventually be playing it.

Yes, it appears that CBT is starting or is just around the corner, but keep in mind, everyone, that if you get into the beta, you have a duty. You shouldn't just want to make the game, but strive to make it the best game out there with suggestions, bug reports, and more importantly, patience in not trying to rush the devs into making anything too soon.

What would the same children that are flinging hatred at SOE say if the game released too early in a buggy state? They would cry, throw tantrums, cuss out the devs, and quit the game that they DEMANDED be released immediately. Please, for the sake of Planetside 2 being the best damn game SOE's ever created, be patient and stop complaining.

At the SOE guys, PLEASE PLEASE TAKE YOUR TIME! We've seen time and time again MMOs being released way before they are ready (Star Trek Online, SWTOR, LOTRO... countless others), and they fail ridiculously hard. You have an incredible opportunity to take the FPS and MMO genres by storm. Keep up the hard work peeps, I'll be waiting!

After reading so many of the posts in this thread, I've reaffirmed my disgust of immature babies who feel entitled to everything. What would the same children that are flinging hatred at SOE say if the game released too early in a buggy state? They would cry, throw tantrums, cuss out the devs, and quit the game that they DEMANDED be released immediately. Please, for the sake of Planetside 2 being the best damn game SOE's ever created, be patient and stop complaining.

At the SOE guys, PLEASE PLEASE TAKE YOUR TIME! We've seen time and time again MMOs being released way before they are ready (Star Trek Online, SWTOR, LOTRO... countless others), and they fail ridiculously hard. You have an incredible opportunity to take the FPS and MMO genres by storm. Keep up the hard work peeps, I'll be waiting!

I don't think the issue is with there not being a beta yet, I think it's the perception of the ambiguity contained in a post (with Radarx's admittedly vague explanations :D) that was supposed to be the announcement we were to be waiting for to clarify things. lol. Instead, there was a lot of misleading jargon folowed by 20 posters that insisted they knew exactly what it meant and gave their own speculative timeframes. If the announcement was perfectly clear, we wouldn't all still be speculating on the internet. Just my two cents.

I'd rather have a date (or set of dates) and wait patiently wether they stick to it or not, instead of wondering if I should be refreshing my email over and over now or a month from now, lol. I'd rather have a date that gets pushed back then have no idea at all.

Actually if you read the message here (http://www.planetside2.com/news/june-2012-producers-letter-beta), it's more like:

Internal beta > Testing how the game works on different computer setups (a form of technical rather than gameplay testing) & Server setup/maint/optimisation (some of us) > external beta(us)

Similar implications about the time it will take, for the technical test at least, but actual gameplay-based testing won't be for a while yet.

This, exactly. I woud put money on the 'priority keys' from twitter being the exact same 'priority keys' from the magazine. I don't thionk a lot of people understand right now that the twitter keys say "Congratulations: Priority Beta Access", and I'd be willing to bet that the only reason we aren't confirmed to be in the same boat is to keep everyone guessing to give hem more freedom during selection, instead of having to actually abide by anyone's entitlement tiers (and tears :D). so as we suspected The closed early beta will be set playtest times of usage to maximize as many people on at one time as possible. that's kool nothing wrong with that at all.

I kinda wish they would have given everyone a free 3 days for PS1 however so everyone could jump on for the PS1 event not just former PS1 players.

i think this is pretty weird as there is a HUGE difference between let's say the the 510 and the 590...

and also you have got really shitty i5 cpu's and badass gaming i5 cpu's liek the i5 sandy bridge processors(i5 2500k)
same goes for i7, and the amd fx series...

i don't really know what they are trying to accomplish with this, maybe it's just for driver/software testing for each card

All I can say is the 30 day free trial has made me that much more excited to play PS2. I remember playing PS1 and having problems with it, but I dealt with those problems because it was as close as I could get to the kind of game I wanted to play.
Now the problems I had (such as spending most of my game time getting to the action, and huge bottleneck battles in bases) have not aged well and are more glaring. I say bring on PS2!

I am already subbed but my buddy BaneofMortality who lives with me got his account activated with the free game time so we jumped in last night and OMG was it INCREDIBLE. Seriously I could not believe the pops and the incredible battle on Ishunder last night.

I have been playing lately and pops were pretty poor and it just felt like walking from base to base, quick fight, next base. Just went through live chat after submitting a trouble ticket this morning outlining my issue, which was "Hey, the executive producer of Planetside 2 said this, it's not happened yet, am I disqualified for some reason?" only with more words. I provided the original ticket number as a reference when requesting live support, and it may have helped.

So if you haven't gotten your time yet, they are aware of the problem, but if you want to you can get in touch with customer support and they'll give you some temporary time until it's fixed. Very handy for downloading the client in preparation for July 1st.

Also, according to him, this shouldn't mean there will be any problems relating to beta. Hopefully this is accurate information.

Worst part is, the guy told me that I would have PS1 access for only 20 minutes just to download the client, yet when I checked I never had any access at all, either in the launcher or in my SOE account. Still can't download the client. /Sigh

I got a 3 day pass while they look into adding the other 27 days. However, I'm still not able to log in.

I'm also concerned with how this affects our status as PS1 veterans for the PS2 beta. If the account database isn't up to date by now, then how can they be sure of our priority for PS2 beta?

Your status as a former PS1 player should not be affected. I can't go into specifics of why some accounts weren't flagged, but I can assure you that Customer Service is taking care of anyone we missed.

It appears that your account should have received the time but did not get it due to a bug that has been effecting many previous PlanetSide subscribers who are also not receiving their time correctly. In order to resolve this issue I will need to forward this issue over to our management team for further review. They will e-mail you once the time has been added. This is the respons i got. I geuss its a bug and not just them not having gotten around to it yet. I do wonder why some are getting gametime, and some not :P

I sent an email this morning about the game time and I had a reply by tonight that just said my issue was resolved, they added the 30 days. I guess they figured out what happened and are just giving the time to people that ask for it.

Haven't gotten mine either...BUT my wife never updated her password after the hack! SO, I can at least download the game and perhaps play as her character until I get my time sorted out...Hopefully something will happen tomorrow.

Within 24 hours from my customer service ticket, I got an e-mail back:
"Welcome back to Planetside! I've gone ahead and added the missing time onto your account. You should be all set my friend. Happy Gaming!"

I would highly suggest that those people who do not have access to PS1 free time yet, to conctact customer service, they are nice people, just be ready to waite up to an hour in queue, or more. SEE YOU ALL IN GAME!!! :D

Yep, I got an email like that as well. I'm all hooked up with the full 30 days now.

Definitely get in contact with customer support if you haven't gotten yours yet. Always a good idea to have it sorted out well in advance of the event.

Evidently SOE has no record of me paying for any time of Planetside, so they won't add the 30 days to my account.

I never subscribed to the game for a large amount of time, but I was pretty certain I paid for at least one or two months, but evidently I didn't on my primary account. I hope it doesn't compromise my "veteran" status, but I guess I'll just deal with it if it did.
