View Full Version : ChinaSide 2 ...interesting... marketing push

This will probably talk mostly to european planetsiders, as it concerns football (yes, football. :D Not gonna use the other word).
It looks like Chinaside is trying a push with its marketing, as The9 (Planetside's publisher in China) made Didier Drogba, who just signed with Shanghai Shenhua football team (which is owned by... The9's owner), its new Planetside's face.
http://www.mmoculture.com/2012/06/planetside-2-cn-spokesperson-revealed.html
So, Pro7Sat1, when will we see Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, or your fellow countryman Miroslav Klose in a TR/NC/VS outfit on TV? :groovy:

You're doing it wrong. After saying "Trying not to sound racist here but," you're supposed to say something extremely racist.
That stage sort of reminds me of a PS2 AMP station at night.

Jeez that whole thing just for Planetside? It's going to get even more attention than E3! I wonder how appealing a game like Planetside 2 is to the chinese, I don't know which games are most popular in that part of the world.

Yup.
And we know it's pretty well marketed in North America too, with all the specialised magazines/websites covering the game.
Now, I really want to see what Pro7 has planned.
It's been stated they have the power to advertise the game in Europe, which I always doubted as it's not even a known company in western Europe.
I sure hope we won't be forgotten (reminder: Cologne's GamesCom is in a month and half)

For me this is very true. My game time is just before and well past midnight US west coast time. So I usually play with Europeans, Chinese, Australians and sleepless Americans.
I hope that the populations for PS2 are so great that even if we have regional servers, the US servers will be packed 24/7. But realistically I think that is doubtful.
And yeah, the majority of Chinese on Gemini are TR. It must be the red.

Or it could be the oppressive nature of the TR attracts Chinese players. All that killing of freedom loving people and controlling of all bussiness and personal matters. After all the eventual takeover of the World by the Cinese will lead to the real Terran Republic.

And why not?
Nicolas Anelka, who also plays for Shanghai Shenshua, is being used to market Firefall, also published by The9.
If they decided to use Anelka for Firefall, I don't see why they wouldn't use Drogba for Planetside 2.
And I bet they've got the money to make Drogba accept it... Which he did, if you look at the second picture (Drogba with a jersey with Planetside 2 written in chinese on it)
Proof about Anelka?

We are really excited about the efforts our partners are putting into promoting PlanetSide 2 over there. If it's not obvious, the sports endorsement is huge not to mention that is one of the biggest show booths I've ever seen. China Joy is one of the biggest game shows in the world. Last numbers I saw were well over 150,000 (think Comic Con size).

Firstly Read up on Drogba and what he has done for his home country the ivory coast. He stopped a civil war. So Putting his name to a game which involves killing people is highly unlikely. The guy is an ambassador to world peace and football.

Haha wow - never thought I'd see PlanetSide 2 on a sports player. Awesome!
It's quite interesting to see Drogba representing Planetside 2, I would never imagined anything like that.
Here's my opinion: I don't think Drogba's endorsement will make a difference, yes it will attract more Chinese players but if anyone here thinks that more Western gamers will be lured into PS2 then you would be mistaken. Usually when famous football players move to some no-name football league like in UAE or China they are forgotten by American and English press and no one really follows up on those players anymore.
This is good news for the9 because it means more gamers in China where there is arguably a bigger gamer base than the US, but nothing the9 does affects us in the West.

Fortunately it does effect me, in the East :)
Also, more money for Higgles and his team is always good.

Yeah, right.
So the man left Chelsea to play in a chinese team for lots of money (because face it, he didn't go there for the challenge), but he wouldn't accept even more money from his new boss just to make some advertisements for a video game?

Drogba is a nice guy and loves his country. While he did not stop a war by himself, he did try his best to appease the situation and call for peace. I have a lot of respect for him. Too sad they could not win the CAN though.
Concerning The9, I don't see anything wrong about accepting a contract with (very) good conditions. The world is larger than Europe/North America and developing countries have changed a lot in 20 years.
I am not entirely surprised to see Drogba working in China. The Chinese have a strong/growing presence in Ivory Coast.
If anything, it's a very good event for Chinaside... and the Chinese. Maybe their national team will actually get better at soccer ().

You don't know that.
Nobody here really cared about the terms of The9 and SOE partnership when it was announced, but SOE might not allow The9 to sell power in the cash-shop, just like Pro7 isn't allowed to.

What are the "subtleties" of NC lore in mainland China? Obviously the enemy factions look upon them as corporate stooges hypnotyzed by a dangerously simpleton "freedom" memetic that expresses itself as terrorism... just as the enemy factions in NA and Europe do.
But how do the NC look upon themselves in the PRC? Are they the heroes in blue fighting the tyrants in red? Have there been any subtle lore changes?

I have no real interest as a United fan in defending Drogbas move to China but for a player nearing the end of his career? Shrewd move I think! Also if you read up on the reasons he left Chelsea, he seems to have some legitimate reasons. A different culture was one I think. Fair enough I say!
It's clear he's not directly promoting Planetside 2 here, he's just wearing the shirt! I find it more interesting that Planetside 2 will get exposure on a football shirt. Bizzare!
