View Full Version : Simple(?) VOIP Question

Something i've not seen answered in any of the broadcasted Q&A relates to how VOIP works in scenarios like:

I'm in a squad, so I'm in a channel with my squad, therefore, can talk to my squad.
I jump into a vehicle with people that *are not* in my squad, so I can talk to the people in my vehicle.

How does this 'simple' scenario interact in terms of who hears me and how?
IE: If i talk, do the people in the vehicle hear me as well as the squad? Or just the vehicle given I joined it 'last'...or is it set up like I dunno, you set a default 'channel' that you can talk in with voice activation but other channels are assigned different PTT keys?

This little scenario could of course get more complicated by adding outfit, platoon, local and whatever other channels you might end up in at the same time.

Or am I over complicating matters and it's a simple case of I can only be in 1 channel at a time, ie: when I join a vehicle (channel), I can no longer hear or talk to my squad until I leave the vehicle etc?

Just wondering how it works without becoming high maintenance for the player.

Surely you will assign different buttons to different channels?

BF2 uses one button to talk to your squad and another to talk to the commander(Squad leaders can do this).

This is just me, but it'd be nice to have "start voice chat", "mute current channel", and "cycle voice channel transmit" keys. Of course, have a menu for more advanced stuff, but that should be good for quick need to do something buttons.

One button per channel would be fine except you've got squad chat, platoon chat for the squad leaders, vehicle chat, any chat channels you make yourself...

I think there a quite a few questions around this topic.

Here's mine..

You are running a platoon or you are a member of a platoon, who can hear you speak:
a) squad only
b) all squads in the platoon?

The platoon is multi-national:
a) Squad a - German speaking
b) Squad b - Russian speaking
c) Squad c - English speaking

In the above, some Russian and German players will speak English but the standard language in each squad is as said. (nb I have been in such platoons many times so it will not be unusual)

See Keybinds on the wiki, they reveal there are keys to change the channels.

I hope there's also an option to have a key dedicated for specific channels. It would be a bit of a pain in the ass to cycle the channel and then having to remember which channel you are currently on and so on

...though I assume the current channel is displayed in the gui (since the voip is integrated)

This is where MMOs shine over FPS games... Hotbar anyone?

yeah, if you look in the wiki linked above, you can see separate keys for separate channels..
Whether those are PTT keys or change to channel keys NFI
