I like how Smedley's reply didn't really answer why they opted for a survey instead of people uploading their dxdiags, which serves the same purpose.
Anywho... A few days could mean more than a week, but I'm guessing they mean within this week.

I think we can expect this technical test to take place between the end of August to roughly about the end of time.

Apparently SOE time is around twice the amount of normal time. It's like Microsoft time only SOE time is more consistent.

It would be incredibly enlightening if someone from SOE could clear up the language on what the Technical Test is. Does it include individuals who aren't at or related to SOE? Or is it still 100% Internal?

ITT: People who have never worked in software development.
There is chronological time, and then there's development time. Development time moves at its own pace, much as work on a family farm does. There are no 9 to 5 shifts. It is not a factory. There is work to be done, and some of the work to be done you don't know about until you start to do it, and you work past sundown if that's what the work requires. Or over the weekend. And when you're done, you're done. Not until. Which drives city people, who are used to stoplights and factories and everything else working at regular predictable intervals, stark raving mad. And mind you, none of this has to do with what the farmer WANTS.
I'm not a Sony fanboi, but I *am* a senior level tech pubs guy and you flatlanders need to settle down and let the devs do their good work. For as long as they find it takes them.

Wish I could comment more on dates. I really do and we know how badly everyone is clamoring for this. As we've said Technical Beta will be first and very tiny just to make sure everything is working. It won't be a lengthy time period before we start bringing in folks in waves.
There ya go, don't get your hopes up. A very, very small amount of people might get in.

Makes you wonder how they are going to do the technicial test.
Do they buy in the equipment and test it?
Do they use friends and family
Do they invite people into the closed beta?
If they invite people they do risk people going mad because the game won't run, but if they have to buy in the equipment to test it then thats pretty expencive.
*edit* just seen post above me :D

Technical test is not CB, nor is it a server load test.
Technical test is most likely a check of GFX drivers and other sys configs.
Before CB begins there will be a GFX Beta driver release from Nvidia for sure. That will be your clue "soon" is soon.

I think they'd be better off doing the technical test outdoors. See how the servers hold up against rain and all.
Someone needs to research past SOE date estimates and compare how they went.
Eg. "We will do thing X for game Y in couple of weeks", find out how long it actually took.
Calculate average.
Now you have your beta date!

The tech test takes palce before closed beta. I think some peoples definitions of different beta stages are a little off?
My understanding is..
Internal alpha -> internal beta -> tech tests -> closed beta -> open beta -> release.
RadarX said on another post earlier today that the tech tests would not take long and were done internally, its just checking that common hardware functions, it's like a sense check that their software is interracting with the main hardware drivers properly.
The original beta announcement from smedley also said the tech tests would take place before anyone external started in the beta.

technical test is to make sure they have video card drivers for this game to cover wide range of computers. then they will begin closed beta.
its just sad that this was supposed to be done weeks ago and closed beta has taken a back seat until it gets finished. perhaps if SOE wasn't so busy posting crap on twitter, they could have been more productive over the last month.
just saying... why does each employee get a twitter account? shouldnt they just have one ps2 twitter account and everyone else should get back to work.

Those are private twitter accounts. A company can't really bar their employees from creating them.

actually, they can. and no, they aren't. even if they technically are private twitter accounts, the SOE company could have standard work policy in place that prevents employees from using facebook, twitter, etc during work hours, or prohibit employees from publicly discussing work projects.
but... SOE is using these individual accounts to promote the game. they are using them to hand out beta keys and "answer questions". that doesn't sound like a situation where a company has its hands tied in how their employees use their personal twitter accounts. its a collaboration. its encouraged. its annoying.

Yes, I'm sure the assistant art director sending out five tweets a day derailed EVERYTHING. How can we possibly get anything done in this day and age when we spend 30 seconds typing a message.

they spend more time than that. maybe 30 seconds to post something, but dozens of posts a day? and what are they responding to? surely they read hundreds of texts. its all bs. its not productive to allow this in a work environment. but they allow it, all in the name of marketing. these days everything must be promoted through social media.

not really. i just dislike social media. long before the corporate world jumped on the bandwagon and started milking it for likes and follows. now social media is even more of a joke because of this ridiculous practice.
i mean i dislike TV as well because of the 30% commercials. who doesn't? so we moved to the internet to watch tv. hulu anyone? hulu used to have very few commercial interruptions, very short. but then what happened? it got too popular (just like facebook) the advertisers got wise and followed us to the internet. now hulu is also at the 30% commercials. so? now i torrent my tv shows. and no, that doesn't make me a pirate because i want to watch my shows w/o commercial interruption. i still pay for cable tv, and i never buy crap they advertise on tv anyway, never have. never will...

You know how you pay for that cable TV you don't watch or that internet you pirate your shows with? Money.
How do you get money? You get a job.
What kind of a job? whatever job you want. Could be a doctor, a lawyer, or maybe...I don't know...and advertising executive.
But if you were an ad executive, how would you do your job? You'd work out advertising contracts for clients with various cable networks to help them grow their own businesses so they can get their own money to pay for their own cable.
But what if nobody watches TV so they don't have to see your commercials? Well, we gotta still do our jobs. Might as well put the commercials on new media sites like Hulu. That way Hulu makes money so that they can get money to pay for their cable. We all gotta work some how.
But what if they start breaking the law and illegally downloading TV shows? Wait, you mean people will go through so much trouble to avoid 3-6 minutes of advertising that they will watch their favorite shows in a manner that takes money out of the pockets of everyone from the show's producers, to the networks, to the ad executives, to the support teams at Hulu that need that cash to support themselves? There are people in the world that are that selfish? Are McDonald's commercials that evil that they would completely subvert contributing to the direct funding of their favorite shows all to save a couple minutes of time? What a disgrace.

Regardless of what you may think, the brain will unconsciously make notes, even if you only see it in the corner of your eye and aren't focusing on it. You can have preferences over things you don't even know exist due to this.
Anyways... screw commercials. Idgaf if they are losing money from me, I'm not sitting through their shitty commercials.

They are not complete unknown. We can roughly calculate how many people have received beta keys / ps1 vets, and i remember highby saying somewhere that the tech test is only going to be a few hundred people. So roughly 50000 people trying to get in with roughly lets say 1000 people being selected, thats 1 in 50 shot, prolly more like 1 in 100. I just wanted to come in and add some perspective because earlier someone had made it sound like there was a 'good' chance when really its a longshot.

Given all the time it will take to set up canvas tents and waterproof tarps in the off-chance that it will rain in San Diego in the middle of summer during the outdoors technical test, and keeping in mind that tomorrow is a holiday...
I would be surprised if the technical test started before next week. Let's just hope they have purchased long enough power extension cords to reach from the electrical room out to the parking lot.

The reason they had us fill out the hardware survey was so that they can get a good sample of a diverse set of hardware configurations to test the game on before they open the floodgates of closed beta. And to test server capacity. They need non-SOE players for both. But realistically only a single server full.
I don't recall them saying the technical test would be in-house only. They simply don't have the resources on hand (both hardward and human) to test what they want to.

I think you may be over-estimating the stability of the build. The more important thing is that by their own unspecific schedule they'll have closed beta after finished tech-testing (may take more than one weekend btw, pending what if any problems show up), and start inviting PS1 players and such.

I thought Kraw was referencing people getting into the Systems Testing as if they were getting into Beta.
CBT wont start until after the Devs have gotten to do enough Systems Tests.
This being July 4th holiday week in the states it's super unlikely that they'll be doing it this week. I also doubt that Systems testing will begin as early as this weekend, but that is more because I want the whole Dev team to have the holidays off so they can come back for the crunch and get the Systems Testing started on the 9th or 10th.

Exactly.
The reason we did the survey is just for them to play with a few systems to try it out and see what works and what doesnt so they can deicide after a few tests what the requirements will be to play ps2.
after that they let people in to test the server stability and maybe find a few bugs (Closed beta) during closed beta they will increase player amounts (i assume they use downtimes a week to test things).the closed beta can take awhile befor they enter open beta.

Why are people rushing so much?
If you think about it, they added 30 days to PS1 accounts, with the message, "Players can hone their skills once more," so I doubt they'll be much activity on any beta before most of those 30 days expire. Put 14 days on the tech testing front and you get start to get towards the back end of July, when the PS1 free time will be beginning to run down. That's when I see the beginning of a Closed Beta phase. I got my CB prio access code, I can wait.

I really would love to see all this hate towards the developers go away its not doing anybody any good there giving us a totally free to play game with amazing graphics and a scale unheard of up until now. Even if it isn't a few weeks there has to be something else you raging nerds can play in the meantime. They're making sure the game is ready and i would wait as long as it take's to see this game fulfill the ambition that i know it can. So i know it stresses higby and the rest of the team to come on here constantly and always see this banter and that's not helping either so plz stop and wait patiently because it's gonna be great!!.

It's not hate, it's just extreme anticipation!
This is merely the side effect of having a highly desirable product, and the developers would be doing something wrong if everyone wasn't reacting this way.

i expect beta to go live after the 30 free days of ps1. beta will probably last a couple months and i won't be surprised if they try to go live a month or 2 before xmas with the actual live game. i'd say that would be a fair assessment of their current timeline. as badly as i wanna play this game it is more important for them to put out a polished product and not overly rush putting it out to the masses. the game is looking fantastic so far though. i'm just glad it appears we are finally nearing open beta where we can all get in.

It's been 9 years since the first Planetside, since that time we have bitched and complained that SOE wasn't looking out for us in regard to the game. We were right and they knew it.
They announced Planetside: Next, which was to be a graphical overhaul of the game and decided it would be feasible to make an actual sequel. The developers are now and will be directly involved with the community.
We have a month, maybe less, to play Planetside 2 and now that it is so close we are extra scrutinous to the wording of someone when they say something. We will get to play the game, but placing pressure on those who are trying to deliver it to us is only hurting ourselves. We have all said "I'll be there in a minute" and the people we said it to understood that it may take more than a minute for us to get there, but they knew we were coming. Please offer them that same curtiousy.
Most sensible thing to come out of this thread, now close the thread as people seem alittle too childish to even discuss beta.

Again, I'm not trying to rain on the parade. I just don't want to see anyone disappointed or see any silly rumours start. The community is not part of tech testing. SOE has more than enough machines - or all ages - to do that on their own, far more efficiently than they would with us messing it up.

Other than saying "you were there", I can't imagine why anybody would want in the technical test. It really doesn't sound like fun. They probably make you do weird shit. "Reboot the game 50 times and see if it crashes", "Run that direction until the map ends, then come back and do it 50 more times, see if it crashes", "shoot 1 millions bullets at that wall, see if it crashes", "run headfirst into that wall....fall off that cliff...stand on your head...." Really....this test isn't going to be fun, at least I tell myself that so I don't think I am missing anything.
Ohh..and as far as making predictions for when beta starts based upon the 30 days free planetside time, don't be fucking derpy. The 30 days was just a gift from SOE on a community planned, and scheduled, event, and 30 days is considered the standard month...duh. The beta could easily start before 30 days is up.

We've been in internal for some time. It doesn't make sense to announce an internal test externally. When the president of SOE says something is going to happen, the odds are really good.
Indeed, I can test out the games performance on laptops ;D

To be fair he also said Beta was going to be in March, 2011.

Wasn't that before they totally changed how PS2 was going to be? As in, instead of being Planetside: Next, the Planetside rehash?

Indeed. We have an awesome test zone that is nothing but explosions every 5 meters or so for an entire square kilometer. We call it many things (awesome map is one). It looks quite a bit like the San Diego Bay fireworks display of awesome we had last night (check the news for footage of that one).
We demand video of awesome map!

Thanks for the heads up.
It honestly is incredible the amount of people that think this BETA is something they own or must play.
Beta is a privilege not a right.

You're aware Matt Higby has stated he won't get his hair cut until public Beta starts, right?

yeah. My account was opened in december of 2003, and I haven't gotten a beta code yet. And I didn't get into the technical beta. Also my cpu wasnt listed on the specs survey. Running an FX 8120. Probably new enough they aren't worried about it. It isn't like all the vets are getting in right away. Who knows. Even being a vet, I may still not get an invitation or code.

If hes gettin a hair cut when beta starts, then that means maybe next week. Pretty epic :) Unless he wants to grow hair to his knees, that might be a long wait.

@Lex Vets don't get a code, their account will be enabled without the need for a code when the time comes.

I'm done worried. I was trying to get the 30 days added to my account. But I was informed PS1 on that account was only trial status. Turns out I had another account I long forget about that I actually subscribed on. But it was the former account that I actually beta registered with. Now I don't know if I'll still be considered a vet or not

1. If he felt confident enough to schedule a haircut, it means they're confident enough to announce a date.
2. Men don't schedule their haircuts far in advance.

Like Gryphon said all Vets will just have it available when it activates.
I'd say if you can log into the account and it has had subscribed to PS1 before then you're green to go.
However I'm no dev.
Edit: I should also mention that not all Vets/PCG keys will get in at the same time, of course. It'll likely be a lottery or something. It's just that Vets/PCG keys are supposedly at the head of the line when SOE gets to picking the number of people they need for testing.

Well there goes my whole July 7th prediction and my $10 bucks...
Not good odds. The first beta tests will most likely take place during SOE office hours, so they can monitor it, not on a Saturday.
We made the bets about 3 months ago, or whenever PC Gamer beta keys were released. I was going off of the first announcement they made about PlanetSide Next, Last year July 7th 2011.

Don't even do that just get a sharp knife and hack it down to a reasonable level.

Also, source of a source of a source tells me Beta is planned for August 1st. Just sayin.
That would dovetail nicely with my 'let the die-hard vets get a good non-rose-spectacled look at OLD Auraxis before they see the new model' theory....
