View Full Version : PlanetSide 2 bases need toilets (immersion).

Will there be toilets? PlanetSide 1 had no toilets. Hence people have always been full of crap. :(
Or in other words, how deep and realistic should base design be regarding what non-combat related stuff is present and thus how far the immersion goes?
I know it may not seem vital to most people here who just think in pew-pew-POW-BWAM, but it was quite nice to for instance see things like toilets pop up in the space station of Metroid Other M. The space station there "made sense" on a 'use level' for those who had been stationed there. (Aside from the morphball routes and puzzles, of course ;)).
So, who'd like to see more base sections with barracks with actual beds, science labs with actual labs and abandoned projects, hospital section (beyond the tiny Bio Lab room we had in PS1), kitchens, cantines, pie bakeries, officers' club, life support room, storage rooms, machinery and factory space, perhaps even the cleaner's cabinet. Hell, some cubicle offices for the TR administration for all I care.
Just little things that are placed such that you fight through them, but that they're a bit more than just the same type of installations that don't actually seem to have been designed as work or living space all the time.
Same for some little detail things like insects and minor fauna scurrying away or minding their own business. Just to make the outdoor environment feel more alive (PS1 always felt very empty and most other games out there have it now, so it would feel less real than those other games, even though this is a MMO and about a living, breathing world and those other games are often even just shoot 'm ups).
Thoughts?

Actually, lack of cities is a lack of immersion issue. People have to have barracks even on Auraxis!
Unless the Vanu taught everyone to commit suicide at night and wake up cloned in the morning.

I don't want to be gunned down while taking a crap though...
Vanu with their advance tech, got automatic shit and piss vaporiser in their suits.
Other 2 factions gotta shit in their pants =]] muahaha
I think that adding bathrooms, living spaces, and office type stuff would be great. One of my favorite aspects of the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series is all the little objects/rooms scattered around.
I am hoping we can set up bathroom stall ambushes in the near future!

I'm down for toilets as long as they had the little sensor thing. Half you bastards would never flush and leave a surprise lying around for everyone else to deal with.

You know when BSG proved to be the superior sci-fi show over Star Trek, no it wasn't the great script, the class of great actors or the fantastic special effects, no it was none of these things.
It was when you found out the Galatica has toilets and the Enterprise doesn't.

There's just some leaps from realism you can't make, bring toilets to Auraxis, start a sanitary revolution!
So who would clean these? I'm not looking forward to sharing my Dropship Center toilet with thousands of you guys without some cleaning.

I would agree that such things are very commonly overlooked in games. It would be pretty damned cool if the bases had barracks, galleys/mess halls, offices, etc to be fought over. And yes, even a few bathrooms.
Right now everything is just a generic industrial room that has no real purpose.

Now that you put it that way, this is a more serious issue after all. Can you imagine if other shooters had only buildings that served a combat purpose?
What do you have to say about it, SOE?

I say awesome.... infils could booby-trap the suckers. Plant a boomer in the bog... or infect the system with a virus that causes the sewage to come back up, thus forcing everybody out of the base.

So you've got to hitch a ride to your nearest bio lab if you need to use the toilet. Sounds fitting enough.
Seriously though, I would like to see some more realistic elements introduced to bases rather than walls and stairs placed seemingly for the sole purpose of interesting gameplay. Or at least make those walls looks used for some purpose.

What you don't realize is, inside the VS portapotty is a spawn tube. You despawn in the spawn tube and respawn in a secret bathroom of the highest technology. It wipes your ass for ya and holds your dick while you piss.

Where are the civilians? Surely they have access to toilets.
Oh they are still up in orbit, on the Orbital station, on the ships from the Earth convoy.
So every time you die and are looking for where to respawn, or while you are logged out, you are able to do your business or its already been done.
Plus, soldiers are always told to suck it up. Think of Air Force pilots who fly 20+ hour missions with gravity pulling on them at all times. Do you think fighter airplanes are fitted with a poop chute?
That being said, I wouldn't mind small barracks and living quarters being added everywhere.
I dont care about Toilets OMG  Why ?

So how many here for the first time actually imagined what it'd be like to have something as simple as toilets on Auraxis for how their characters would interact with it?
A lot. That's the point of immersive gameplay design and making it more believable and in a way funny. Is there an actual combat purpose to it? No! But it makes the story more fun. :)
Think of it as a road without grass growing on it at the edges, without lose sand and pebbles, without cracks, without scratches, rubber, litter. Without rust or dents, or other imperfections on the railings and lantarns flanking the road. It just makes it too good to be true and you realise that.
Bases are the same. If they're too lacking in "every day, common and imperfect stuff", you'll notice it's less real. It was one of the first things that struck me regarding PS1 design: it wasn't a world all that well designed for its own video game characters to actually live in.
Btw. World of Tanks? Has those little wooden toilets that are outback. It has dog houses, fences, used and abandoned objects, trains, wreckage, churches, docks, butterflies, birds, all kinds of small details you can interact with (read: drive over and destroy) that make the world come to life. Far Cry is also good at this. CoD has breaking of glass and objects such as vending machines where little cans pop out, which you in turn can shoot.
These little things may not matter to the actual fighting, certainly not if they can't be exploited to explode at the right time, but they do matter to make the backdrop convincing. They do matter when you're not fighting and just looking around. They do matter if you try to envision where you are fighting.
That's why... we 'need' these things. :)
Btw, imagine for one second the first time you'll shoot someone who is afk in the crapper and how long after you'd tell stories about that. ;) If you played Golden Eye 64, you know what I mean!

I was a little sad when I realized this wasn't a joke thread :(
Were you? :) Expected mostly poo jokes and got it. Because that's the level of response you can expect here. The moment you're in a game that's somewhat serious and you look around and go "this is all fun and all, but... don't these people eat?". Then the next thing you realise is "meh it's a game".
Designing a game is the whole package. It's not just "here's some guns, here's some tanks, go!" The best games have the best environments. Good environments make you forget you're in a game. Good environments make you feel at home. Can you honestly imagine any architect anywhere in the world making a building people live in without very basic things like doors? And yes, toilets. And yes, washrooms and yes offices.
Imagine for a second there's nothing but blank walls. In fact, no detailing whatsoever. No monitors, no crates, no cannisters, no terminals, no piping, no textures, no tech kibble, no cactii, no plantlife, no insects, no rubble, no debris, no wreckage after a tank blows up.
Nothing but blank geometric corridors and halls. Nothing but the SAME geometric corridors and halls.
Could you still fight to the fullest? Do you enjoy walking the empty buildings in the caves in PS1 for the scenery once there's nobody there to shoot and distract you from it? Doubtful. What's fun about fighting through empty rooms with nothing in them? Rooms that lack any sense of meaning and function?
Imagine urban combat and houses not having a kitchen, living room, bathroom and bed room at the very least (hall and stairs would be expected) and you'd expect them to be full of random personal items and furniture. If it doesn't have that or a suggestion that it once was there, the houses would feel completely fake and uninhabited. Doesn't mean you can't shoot people there, but it doesn't really feel like you're there shooting people either. It feels like you're in a game with devs that didn't have time or interest in developing things completely and just put in what they had.
Just ask yourself, why is CoD level design littered with random, non-combat related objects?
Why is it, that the airport map has a number of different stores and that when you pass through the security metal detector gates a beeping noise goes off?
Because games have advanced since Wolvenstein 3D and the environment is more interactive and more realistic than people guarding completely empty halls.
I know I started this thread with a light joke because I expected the reaction here from people who think that spending time on a toilet design "probably takes away from something completely unrelated", rather than takes away from someone designing random computer monitor #349 (speaking of which, too many monitors showing the same thing is another one of those immersion breakers, so best not to have too many in view at the same time and going through the same cyclical .gif).
Level design needs to be taken serious, I'm sure the devs do. Give them some feedback and ideas to work with.
PvtHazard
2012-07-09, 07:33 PM
If they do plan on having urban areas in the game I think that non-combat related objects and rooms would be an awesome idea. I also think maybe adding some fauna to the areas could lead to some more immersion.

It's probably a little late in the level design for them to do this initially, but I definitely think it would be cool to have this sort of stuff at some point.
As many have already explained, it's all about immersion. Those moments in between the fighting... but also those moments DURING the fighting. Imagine assaulting the TR administration, moving into the office area and engaging in a firefight. Which is more appealing? The office area being an empty or sparsely furnished "room"? Or the office area having desks, chairs, water cooler, book shelves, computer terminals, etc? Even more, imagine paper, sparks, bits of stuff flying around when a grenade goes off. It helps you forget, just for a few seconds, that it's all make believe.
