This is actually not that bad of an idea. It WOULD create a lot of publicity for SOE and PS2 but I just don't see it happen unfortunately. Any footage though coming from TB is good! :)

For everyone who is expecting them to announce the beginning of invites to external closed beta (and it's imperative that you be specific when asking this question or you leave the door open to plausible deniability answers), I hope they will, but you still have to account for these quotes from Radarx. Based on everything he said, they will most likely maintain official secrecy on closed beta when it opens up to external testers.

I can't remember ever seeing a company provide a specific Beta date (if it happens it must be rare). They do announce they are entering closed Beta (and that's effectively what we are doing today) but NDA's and dates are never made public.

I wish we could provide you more, but that's just not how game Betas are done unfortunately.


I do know some folks are disappointed and I honestly wish we could have set reasonable expectations when communicating. To be fair, all we promised was an announcement regarding Beta. This is effectively our Closed Beta announcement. It's unlikely we'll announce "Hey we let X number of folks in" and dates are just not something that happens in modern game development. A date is a commitment and we take them seriously.

no because the technical test does not involve enough people to have quality footage . the only point of a technical test is to see if the drivers/hardware/OS mismatch works with the servers and game

Eh? But tech tests are what SOE are doing now, anyway. I don't see how physically going to SOE is going to create a gaming environment that is any different to playing on their servers from home.

I kind of don't want them to announce orbital strike, I'd rather be happily be playing along in beta and get nuked from orbit and watch as in game chat explodes with "awesome"s and "how do I do that!!!" messages. That is the only suitable announcement by the devs to introduce that feature.

He does mention it several times but thats not enough to call "tedious" or bad in any way. He mentions it several times because it's a huge thing about the game and he can't expect all of his footage to be watched by the exact same crowd. Thats the idea of marketing, repeat- cause new viewers come and they need to hear it as well.

He is by far my favorite gaming-commentator proffesional-wise. But nothing beats Robbaz King of Sweden.

Comic-Con conveniently falls within those six days. My bet is that he's going to be either a) live-streaming from SOE's booth, much like he did at E3, or b) simply covering the games on show at Comic-Con.

This will give SOE a chance to properly show off PS2's scope -- something they haven't been able to do as of yet -- whilst also maintaining control over what footage gets released, and not having to worry about whether everyone's computers are up to scratch to play the game (which would make for bad press if they couldn't.)

Also, being at SOE gives the press interview opportunities and the chance to see some stuff not in the beta, like a new continent.
