While a given, we can only hope their streaming PS2 LIVE means beta is very, very near, and when I say near, I mean this week or next (preferably this week, amiright?)

Unless of course there was a confirmation in the stream somewhere. I wouldn't know, between my $#!%%& bandwidth and twitch apparently acting up, all I get is 2-3 seconds of video for every 10-15 seconds of freeze frame.

Also, same here, though from what I understand most everyone is having an issue, regardless of bandwidth.

There are still kinks, that is for sure. But I feel like it went very well, esp. with the way the game was working. Unfortunately I noticed a lot of the trolls that watch Twitch kind of overran the chat, asking Higby stupid questions, which makes me worry for the community some.

Other than that slight issue, I think this will happen very soon!!!

I wouldn't worry about the Twitch chat... that's what stream chats are like, and I'm sure Higby is used to it by now considering how much eSports he likes watching on Twitch (EVO last weekend for example, that chat was nasty lol).

it's pretty laggy twitch broadcast tho stops and starts quite a few times.

Not a complaint just saying twitch was evidently having problems.

he has stated on twitter he can't post a recorded video of it however as some stuff he did at start was not ready to be shown to the gen public.

Notice a few Reaver tooltips:

Reaver Composite Armor - Adds composite armor on the Reaver Light Aircraft that will add resistance from small arms fire.

Decoy flares - Launches several decoy flares, disrupting lock-ons and any missiles currently tracking the vehicle.

Hellfire Rockets - The Hellfire Rockets are dumb-fire rockets that can do massive damage on direct hits. These rockets are ideal for engaging ground targets from the air.

Coyote A5M - The Coyote Air to Ground Missiles are capable of locking-on to enemy vehicles. Once a lock has been acquired, simply fire the weapon and it will begin tracking your target.

Cluster Bombs - Cluster Bombs trade propulsion for a larger payload. They inherit the vehicles speed when launched and will fall to the ground. Cluster bombs do area damage on detonation.

-

And a few for the Gauss Rifle:

IRNV Scope - A standardized infrared scope that allows high visibility in low light situations.

Reflex Sight - A standardized reflex sight with 2x magnification zoom designed to promote faster precision aiming.

4x Scope - A 4x zoom laser scope useful when engaging targets at greater distances.

4x Scope - A 4x zoom scope useful when engaging targets at greater distances. (No laser!)

Suppressor - Decreases muzzle flash and audio range.

Forward Grip - Reduces horizontal sway during recoil.

Smoke Launcher - Under barrel smoke grenade launcher that, when fired, will produce a large smoke plume capable of providing cover for a short period of time.

Genade Launcher - An under barrel grenade launcher weapon attachment.

Do aircraft really need lockon air-to-ground missiles? Those things better be MUCH weaker than the dumbfire rockets.

I really hope they are a noob-only weapon and something a skilled pilot "graduates" from.

Because seriously, as if aircraft aren't going to farm ground vehicles enough as it is.

People keep forgetting about SAM missiles, base turrets, Engi turrets, MAX weapons, and the Skyguard turret on the Lightning. Let's also not forget other aircraft armed with AA missiles.

Because seriously, try flying an aircraft over even a small battle in PS1, imagine how difficult it will be to fly in PS2. I'm preparing for stupid amounts of AA, as usual.

I would like to take this moment to point out something I thought very cheap:

Higby attacks a MagRider in his Lightning. MagRider, understandably, stomps his ass. Higby ejects from Lightning before it explodes, pulls giant AT launcher from shoulder and finishes off MagRider.

This is very lame. IMO, should go back to PS1 driver system. Only light/unarmored units can drive most vehicles. Want to take an RPG with you into your tank? Fine, but you can't take anything else. Ideally you shouldn't be able to take ANY large weapon inside a vehicle with you like that (in RL, they carry SMGs or carbines). Exception, of course, would be a troop carrier or some such. Wow... really impressive.

E3 footage was already wowing me, but they've improved and added so much stuff compared to that build.

Anyone still want to complain that tanks have paper armor? lol

I like how they are naming the different hex zones like you would name an individual map in other shooters. It makes it feel that much more like PS2 is evolving the genre.

Soon has never been so immanent.

The passengers would be able to carry whatever.

I'm not sure if that magrider died or not either... It looked wounded for sure, but I didn't see the kill spam.

Two things I spotted happened shortly after the 17:00 mark:

- Higby seemed to attack the Terran Lightning tank with some sort of humping technique with his Light Assault. It didn't work very well... He had a grenade in his hand but didn't use it? What was he up to??

- There was a medic that 'spawned on him'... And I'm assuming it was this medic that revived Higby twice in a row. Strange thing was you never see the medic on screen. Is it some sort of remote revive mechanic? How did the medic not get pinned down and killed like Higby was?

Overall it's some pretty cool footage.

Just a few things that I noticed:
- TOCS is a hero
- HA allowed in reavers/tanks
- Instant entry/exit for vehicles
- Medical applicator has to be aimed but enjoys some leeway in both range and target movement  (let's hope reviving won't be interrupted by people running between you and your target anymore)
- Higby spawncamped by TR. No, it wasn't GODJOEY. :D
- Tanks take damage super fast but also get repaired super fast. I would prefer a slower pace for vehicle gameplay. Especially for battle tanks ! Where will buggies fit if tanks already have paper armor ?
- With a dedicated driver, that prowler would be toast.
- Air vehicles project shadows
- Almost forgot this big one: Galaxies are not a big requirement for battles to happen in PS2 since the mobile spawn points are the squadmates...

I don't think he was able to kill the Magrider, but he certainly hurt it more than he should of been able to.

If they allow this kinda crap into the final build I'm gonna be a sad Vanu :( I don't think I've ever seen anyone 'compliment' the ability to hop out and rocket launch in BF3, so I don't know why they're doing it here.

I share the feeling about this mechanic. When I saw it happen, I thought that was exactly the reason why MAX/HA drivers and instant entry/exits should not be allowed.

At least, they won't hop in your own vehicle if you get out of yours...

I noticed the same thing, and went back for another look. If you look carefully you'll see that the medic was simply behind him the whole time. Each time he gets revived, look at the mini-map. There is a green ally arrow right behind both times.

About hopping out of the tank and using a rocket launcher: you also have to realize once the game is in beta if this becomes a big problem it will probably change so I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm not particularly "worried" about it. But if nobody comments or complains about something, then they have no reason to take it out, or worse, think people like it.

That's the whole point of these forums right now, and the Beta in particular, is to find and address exactly these sort of things.

I saw those certs as well. Here's hoping they actually matter in the final game. Even fully certed up I'd like to see a good 1.5-2 seconds to get in and out of the vehicle.

And any ideas about Higby's humping technique? It looked like he was trying to hand-to-hand combat with that Lightning tank. Any ideas??

9:40 - No. Just... no. This is piss poor. You should not be capable of leaping instantly out of your dying tank.

He was placing C4 on the Lightning. What was in his hand is the detonator. He placed one or two packs of C4 and then turned around to run away, unfortunately being killed before he could detonate.

The same tactic was used by TotalBiscuit in his first PS2 video: 302 Found - skip to 1:50 in.

I tend to agree with you here, with one exception. If you put delays on entry and exit of vehicles (as I'm sure they will), then I don't care if HA's can pilot or not. Like you said, the enemy can do it too, but also you're trading something off to be HA-in-tank so it can be balanced... ie. you could be engi-in-tank or LA-in-tank which would have their own advantages.

Also, there's a risk-reward for how long you try to stay in the tank (this will be even moreso with entry/exit delays). Do you stay a bit longer and use the more powerful tank gun one more time but risk being totally blown up, or do you decide to bail out early and trade one final large tank blast for maybe one or two AV rockets?

Time is a resource and so is opportunity, so it's not simply 'lol I get extra AV firepower if I go HA-in-tank'.

Xyntech
2012-07-09, 10:57 PM
I'll probably almost never fly as HA, but it's absurd all of the people who are freaking out about it. Making it take a little longer to jump out of the tank is fine, but considering how we have yet to see a rocket launcher take out a tank or an enemy aircraft in a one to one duel, what exactly is the problem? You don't like that style of gameplay? Well it clearly isn't very effective in this game, so just kill the moron, laugh at them, and move on. If they succeed in using it to finish you off, maybe you should have been more careful, but I seriously doubt that's going to happen in most situations.

We've already seen that there are certs like "quick exit" for vehicles, so presumably normal exit speeds will be at least somewhat longer. Tradeoffs should balance that out nicely, and unless HA's AV gun gets a huge buff, this will be a non issue in PS2.

Littleman
2012-07-09, 11:02 PM
Don't forget directional armor. An HA guy is probably essentially wasting rockets shooting at the front of a tank, which might I add, the Mag-Rider is designed to keep directed towards its target. Good ol' VS engineering, minimizing weaknesses where ever it can.

Hell, the prowler attacking the front of Higby's vanguard pretty much only accomplished denting the front bumper.

Yep after watching that Lighting/Magrider/HA battle several times in a row, I think that's my second favorite part.

My favorite is when Higby finds a TR infiltrator near the control point, starts shooting at him, but then Higby's teammate walks right in front of him totally oblivious, and Higby is all like 'OMG gtfo of my way there's an INFILTRATOR BEHIND YOU'. Infiltrator eventually dies, but I can see having lots of fun as Infiltrator :)

Ummm.... Ask the 100's of players that did that in PS1? Seriously, if you can have your heavy hitters drive, what's the point in transport vehicles? The balance to this game is trade offs. Want to drive? Then can't jump out and run into a building in reinforced armor. Want to boost your armor/weapons? Get in a transport.

Not to mention the realistic part.... Every been in a tank? Barely get in there with body armor, let alone pouches and rockets.

On a graphical stand point ive notice some guns animation that look stiff i mean while running the guns go really qick in (( run mode )) and then moove quickly and stiffly on left and rigth

To fix those animation they must do it slower like the guns go down more slowly than it will moove and also reducing a bit the (( balancing moovement )) is a must because it make it look a way to stiff

Also the snipers scope have a huge problem it take a way to much space on the screen while not aiming and its even worst while running !

hope those will get fix

I also saw a problem with the freedom of moovement for NON jetpacking class will be to limited as it is rigth now I think they must work out a BF3 like solution where you can climp on rocks and jumb over little object whith a fluid animation like BF3 or making the jumping animation work better to pass trough object and rocks !

the game look awesome but the stream was kinda laggy

i also think the tanks seams pretty tough i cant wait to see what will happen when 100 of those will ran over others .... lets see :D

Was great overall!

Likes that stood out specifically:

Tanks sounds, and graphics. Graphics overall are extremely good, good immersion there, while retaining the characteristic charm that made PS1 great!

Medics rifle, seems useful even at range, nicely balanced I thought. Much of what I saw seemed well thought out weapon wise.

Trees, and the alternate approaches to bases, the cover seemed very good for the ground, and hard for the air in parts, in others it was more open. This kind of balanced landscape was well done, and I hope reflected across the gameworlds, some terrain favouring one attack types, other terrain favouring other games types.

Dislikes:

Bases look great, but seem very difficult to defend. - Maybe this will be easier with more players, as they look extremely open. If not i'll not be defending much, just attacking, not much point defending if you can't defend. People complaining about too many players being on a server, really need to consider that fact. It really looks to make a snipers dream come true at present, I forsee ALOT of sniper spam in the open layouts.

Being able to jump out the vehicle instantly with AV, seems a bit op'd, at least make the need to equip it. - For those who don't understand it, this will make 2 lightnings more preferable to 1 heavy tank. If one is going out of the fight, run away, jump out in cover and you've still got two people shooting at the heavy tank. This will also mean pilots are shooting each other out of the sky when bailing, a bit meh.

Facility capture spam on the hud needs a size and transparency option in the UI, at present its way too big and frequent, getting in the way of the action.

This mechanic sucks here but is not a problem in BF.

In BF if you get out of your vehicle the enemy can steal it thus denying your team a vehicle until you can kill the one you lost. In BF people who leave their vehicles empty to fire hand-held weapons are screwing it up for the team.

Here a driver can fire his main weapon, get out and fire his rocket launcher, then jump back into his tank and fire his main weapon again. No risk of the enemy capturing his vehicle while he is doing this dance.

It needs to be changed. Some sort of delay or animation needs to be put in to prevent this nonsense. Other alternatives are that HA can be prevented from entering any non-transport vehicle, or they can allow vehicles to be captured by the enemy.

Not sure if anyone else picked this up. at 31:50 or so Higby started using a grenade launcher. It had two shots to be used. However when he spawned as a combat medic I believe he had 3 grenades on his person.
Can anyone tell if the hand grenades are being used for the rifle or if the rifle comes with its own nade ammo?

Had this discussion with another person a month or so ago. Thinking that the grenade launcher may be considered like rifle rounds and not cost resources.
Edit: Hiby is selecting his loadout at 30:50 grenade launcher at use at 31:50

Things I don't like:

*Higby uses cheesy tactics, hops out of a tank right before the killing shot, and unleashes AV for the win. Please put in Enter/Exit animations and leave the cheese for BF.

*Drop pods ( not just higby ) all over a base, no SOI blocking the deployment of them. Weakens any form of assault or defense front. At 28:12 Higby drop pods RIGHT ON TO A CAPTURE POINT ROOF, walks in uncontested, and caps the points.

*Bases are not designed to be defended, apparently. They look like death match/arena areas.

*Lack of working doors.

I just thought about it but basically, when it was said that squad spawning could not be done inside bases, it was meant that the drop pods could not drop into buildings. As the Higby stream showed, they still drop over the squadmate location if they are in a base building.

Is there a plan to make teammates disappear from the spawn points list if they are inside a building ? At least, it forces them to get out and risk being shot if they want reinforcements.

The chat window is gorgeous btw ! However, it may be visible more than expected when all the surrounding players start spamming voice macros and local/CR chat. Still, it's a beautiful UI.

i can see lots of places to defend from, alot of the capture points are indoors. so doors you can defend from in side or out. boxes and other cover to hide behind, not to mention the gun emplacements you can put down. people have to realize we are only seeing a small part of the base from 1 perspective. i try to view the base from every angle. see how it can be defended and how it can be assaulted. spot all the little places. the walls looked good in this vid. good for defending on. cant wait to see more of the bases and maps

watching the vid again and the bases look so awesome. so many places for ambushes and to set up defenses. think Higby needs a few shooting lessons though lol. would love to see this again but some night combat. full on dark with loads of people fighting.

And 2 heavy tanks will be preferable to 2 lightnings. So....?

*Higby uses cheesy tactics, hops out of a tank right before the killing shot, and unleashes AV for the win. Please put in Enter/Exit animations and leave the cheese for BF.

He died in that fight. His opponent could have done the same even if Higby had gotten close to killing him (which he didn't).

Irrelevant if he dies or not. He hoped out the tank as a soldier with AV capabilities. Essentially, he had a second life to use. Its cheesy.

ok watched the vid again and the mag was also being hit by either another tank of from the air. Higby did little damage with the launcher as only 1 hit. plus i still the mag got away after it blew him to bits lol

i'll still take in a tank rather then out of one anyday

I don't think it's any more cheesy than having engineers stand behind a tank and non-stop repair it.

I am glad the bases are open. If you have enough people properly defending, you should be able to do it just fine.

The problem with cramping up the bases is you'll only create bottleneck areas where players just funnel to and it becomes a boring stalemate and the tactics used to defend/attack a base will just revolve around clogging the bottleneck areas. That's boring.

And so did his opponent.

Is there a better reason for it not to exist besides personal distaste for the tactic?

a second life which he got 1 shot in. if people cant aim then you may be at a disadvantage. but a tank shell on flesh with do far more damage then a rocket shell on composite armor. and if he got behind the rock id say the splash damage from the explosion would have killed him or seriously injured him.

I see you ignored the rest of the post. So you have no other reason than "I don't like it!" for why it shouldn't work. That's fine. I know the conversation is done now.

Have a good day.

Its a terrible design for a war-game. There needs be no other reason. This is not a game that emulates a single battlefield.

Jumping out of a plane before death and firing off an RPG at your attacker at 10,000 feet needs to stay in session based games. Apply that to other vehicles.

I like those games, but they are not a Persistent war game.

It's only shitty if it works.

So far, it hasn't worked in any of the footage we've seen, and I actually thought Higby had a decent shot at taking that Magrider out with all the damage that had already been done.

But I still think that the biggest factor here is exit time, which sounds like it won't be an issue in the final build (fast exit being something you have to sidegrade into as a tradeoff). Since HA aren't some kind of rambo-esque vehicle killing gods, and aren't objectively superior to the other classes in infantry combat situations, letting them drive has no real downsides. It would be arbitrary and stupid to prevent them from driving while allowing most other classes to drive.

Nothing personal, was just reminded of that is all :D

I'm not clear on why bailing from vehicles is good for single-battlefield and session-based games but not for large-scale persistent games. I'm also not clear why people seem to insist that having a rocket launcher means you are more valuable when bailing from a vehicle than having C4, placeable turrets, invisibility, or the ability to heal everyone else bailing from said vehicle.

You say it is a terrible design, but you have yet to (as far as I have seen mind) adequately explain WHY you think it is bad design other than personal distaste. I can respect your opinion, but if you want to convince others that it is the correct opinion to have you should put more effort into explaining why.

You say that HA gets a "second life" but the same is true of all other classes. Based on what I've seen of your other posts, I assume you just don't like having people live after blowing up their armored vehicles. But why is it bad design to allow people to get out of armored vehicles quickly? Especially when (as we've seen so far) it doesn't help much?

Jumping out of a plane before death and firing off an RPG at your attacker at 10,000 feet needs to stay in session based games. Apply that to other vehicles.

Again, why does the difference in game mode matter?

Because it doesn't matter at the end of the match. I don't have a problem with people getting out of vehicles, I have a problem with the "pooping" in and out and the ability to do so instantly. Its fine, when the game is all about kill counts and boom head shots, Planetside is not all about kill counts.

Its janky, its cheesy, it looks ridiculous, and I feel it breaks the flow of the wargame. Session based shooters are built around the disposable experience, Planetside has persistence.

Since a lot of people weren't aware of the stream, I was so gentle to Fraps it for your enjoyment. =) The video might be a little choppy and it freeze quite a few times, but it's still pretty watchable at some points.

Enjoy 35 minutes of studio footage: 302 Found (http://youtu.be/017I9ghLsYA) (It might still be processing)

Many thanks TOCS

Couldn't have said this better myself. I can't recall a single BF3 or BF2142 "round" that I've told friends about, or had one of those remember-when moments with some buddies.

PS1 has more than I can count and it's exactly because of what Bloodworth mentions.

Right... But does that affect the argument about whether HA's should get a chance to fire rockets when/if they bail out of their tank? I don't understand that part.

Hmmm... so how did PS1 players/vets still cap bases??? Air-drops, air-drops and more air-drops! Also, now with jetpacks, LA's can find other ways in.

Just because something is BORING to you, doesn't mean it's not to others. What's boring to me is when something is designed with the ADD gamers in mind. If teams can't break through a bottleneck... then they don't deserve to cap a base in my opinion.

I'd prefer my base layouts not to basically turn every fight over a base into another grenade spamming, bullet crunching hell in halls 2 people can barely fit in, let alone 200, thank you. Big open rooms/halls with multiple entry ways please. PS1's base fights were god awful cluster-****s.

Your tactics in PS1 involved throwing grenades at the enemy relentlessly but never effectively, or tossing yourself into the grinder hoping everyone behind you will follow the push to the CC/gen/spawn room.

Ya its understood that organized outfits enjoyed a type of game that was very different from what the so called Zerg was subjected to. It seems that one of the goals of PS2 was to encourage the zerglings to do things other than sprint into the nearest bottleneck. With so many different ways in and so many places to spawn from the basic player base will be in many different places instead of like...two.

I think outfits being the elite of the PS world is unchanged, perhaps even more true! There are now more tactical and strategic situations to exploit and specialize in, and outfits are still gonna be the game changers.

The new bases make the battlefield (more) unpredictable, and hopefully more interesting.

I've heard a lot of complaining about how god awful most base assaults were in PS1. Sure, not everyone will think so but I would wager that open bases will bring in more tactics and reward more co-ordination than cramped bases.

Don't take what I said so personally Reizod. It had nothing to do with "ADD gamers". You can still air drop on to bases. The open concept just allows more tactics and requires even more organization and team play. What's bad about that?

Base layouts and terrain will be much easier to modify in PS2 compared to the first game, so I wouldn't be surprised to see frequent tweaks to different bases and hex zones to improve the balance of fights just like we see individual multiplayer maps get updates in other shooters. So it wouldn't surprise me if bases end up being too impossible to defend that they could change things up a bit to improve the situation.

Personally, I don't think it will be an issue, but I'm far from an expert.

i don't know that it's necessarily alright for bf either. if i wasn't at work i could link a video yall have probably seen from bf3 of the guy in the [f-18?] that bails, snipes the pilot of another plane and then gets back in his own jet. whereas that is completely AWESOME to watch, it's a little rediculous to experience. i think your success driving a vehicle should be based on your skill driving it and not some kind of novelty mechanic.

i used to think of the complaints about no entry/exit animations in the same way i thought about rp'ers demanding a walk-toggle. i think this is a good illustration of a practical reason that they should add that or something like it to the game.

Not taking anything personal. Nothing bad about the open concept. It's just that it seemed like you was trying to justify the new base design/layout by saying the previous layouts was "boring", that's all.

But so far, you guys have made some great points about the new layouts that I totally agree with.

Higby's already commented on them. In the footage, it was set to notify the whole continent of captures/defenses. They're looking to tweak to just your current hex's facility notices, or maybe current and surrounding or something.
