You do realise, that "tech test" is affectively Beta, despite Smed's statement, right? Random people are let in - external testing, be it pre-beta or beta is no big difference.

I belive this means that an EXTERNAL tech test will begin in a few days. During this test the team will select a variety of machines to test PS2 on, selecting from the survey we filled out. The test will go for an unknown amount of time, and will be followed by beta.

I think Higby's agreement was to not cut his hair until people are being let in; the external tech test might count for that, allowing for the rumor of a haircut on Thursday which is within the timeline of "the next 2 days".

This makes me excited! PS2 will finally be leaving the alpha state :D

I don't know how long this tradition has been going on, but I'm pretty sure for at least some decades:

In Sumo (Japan's national sport) when a high-ranking wrestler retires, they hold a televised ceremony called a danpatsu-shiki in which the wrestler has his long hair cut - symbolically ending his career.

The only attendence numbers I could find was from a 2nd to top ranking wrestler (Tochiazuma) who's ceremony had 10,000 attendents (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tochiazuma_Daisuke). Other higher ranking and more popular wrestlers most certainly had higher numbers in attendance.

I doubt that Floyds can seat that many customers :)

If you got a beta key they sent an email out saying as much. The email essentially says:

"When you're in the beta, the only place you can discuss the beta are on SOE's Planetside 2 beta forums."

I don't know how many times I've typed that on these forums.

I would think recording video would help streamline reporting any glitches and bugs. You know those moments where they ask what you were doing before the bug/crash? Send them the proper clip.

200 ping is not that compeditive, in fps.

Very silly if they don't test that, and just have EU testers on EU servers, as people will be playing on both, hence the big outcry a while ago to have the ability to play on both. - Though I feel they will be doing at some stage.

Sorry If this point has been made...but the threads getting a bit long so I might have missed it...

...but didn't smedly tweet that tech test was in the next few days and beta would follow assuming no probs found(a couple of days ago) meaning tech test might be on now or tomorrow and the rest of the week. So its unlikely that beta will be before the weekend at the earliest.

So there's a chance I suppose that the first few people might get invited to beta for the weekend or next week...but I think anyone holding their breath is mostly likely just to find themselves going a bit red in the face...

However...ain't the anticipation fun??? I doubt there's ever been so many hanging on for rumours of a haircut....

I'd say J. Smedley is in a capacity to make pretty 'official' statements about these things, and his twitter was going crazy this week with how soon beta would be starting... Tech test over a few days and then people are getting in to the beta.

This Command Center, which was a cool show by the way, was recorded last week and basically released the absolute latest time frame for the beta to start. Since then I think we've had more than enough signals from Smedley and Higby that things are getting under way fairly rapidly.

Don't know if they'll ever officially confirm exact start of Beta. But Higby promised in January he wouldn't cut a hair on his head until outside tester's are in the game.
