Just in from the AGN.

So, would you Pay at all? How much would you pay?

I would pay. 5 bucks. Possibly more depending on what it can do.

I'd pay, but the "wall of data" that's available for other people to make apps from should be free.

If it invloves some sort of advantage, i.e. launching a drone strike from your ipad at the dude who has you pinned down etc... then people will definitely pay cash monaaay for this.

It's basically a way to p2w

With all the data they are going to pump out for us to use why would you pay for an app?

Theres no info on it. I refuse to pay for anything without concrete info.

In principle, yes, however I have a Blackberry / BB Playbook so it would have to be an Android app available through the Blackberry Appworld.

Already bought $50 worth of station cash, I would pay for the app, and if there was some sort of premium sub I would pay for that too.

Indeed. A free-to-play game, but you have to pay for the app? Sounds silly on the face of it...

Giving away all the data behind the app but charging for the app itself is pointless. Someone is just going to create there own app and make it free.

Stated many times that any "stats" data will be able to be exported for the community to do whatever with.

the app will be free , higby clearly said it at e3 .Maybe they should put a donate function on it

If it was a chance to make more money, then they would change what they said. Not saying SOE or Higby want to lie to us, just remember that this is a business, and if they don't make money the servers shut down.

Giving away all the data behind the app but charging for the app itself is pointless. Someone is just going to create there own app and make it free.

Very correct, except the VoIP to players in game(and the drone stuff if they go through with it). They said the data would be exported, but highly doubt the community will be able to make apps that interact with the game.

Also, side note. Because I am a fan, I would gladly pay money for this, prob up to $30 (Specially if the drone comes into play). But why would you tell SOE this . . . ;) Just saying.

$1 to $5 seems fair based on what features we've heard it will have and based on how much apps tend to cost.

At the same time, I think it would be better to be free.

They could always do an ad supported version I suppose, hopefully with as unobtrusive ads as possible, with the paid version being ad free.

I would Pay for the App if it supported Andoid, was less than $2, and worked at the same time I was playing so that I could have a map of the battlefield open and viewable while I was playing PS2.

Cheers!

This is a free to play game so it would not make any sense for the app to be paid. That said given how awesome the game is, I would gladly spend a reasonable amount of money on the app.

They need to make it a profitable venture, but I would not be opposed to spending $5 or less based on what I know of the application. It's a matter of how good of a sell they make; is this a super feature rich, regularly updated, and very handy application? Will I be able to learn more about myself as a gamer, and find a ton of usefulness within this application? If they are able to market it as such, I would be willing to pay more.

It's really all about how much they make it worth to the consumer.

Bearing in mind that the game is free to play, I think it is a bit unfair to expect the app for free too. They need to make money from somewhere and this is the perfect sort of optional purchase for that model.

ill pay for the app as long as there is no monthly fee, like WoW has (wich i never used cause of the fee)

I voted no, in part because I think it'll help keep players involved in the game (hopefully not the the detriment of their work).

Of course, part of it is also that I don't own a "smart" phone nor do I plan to, so I wouldn't get it regardless.

ill pay for the app as long as there is no monthly fee, like WoW has (wich i never used cause of the fee)

Huh. Armory at least used to be free. I guess they added new features like mobile AH but...

Blizzard/Activision's business choices have been increasingly disappointing to me of late, which is unfortunate because Blizzard makes good games otherwise.

They said the same functions from the app will be available via the website, meaning you could just use your IOS/Android device to surf to the website.

2012-07-15, 03:51 AM
I've spent maybe... $5-10 on iOS apps... total. I typically only get free apps, and use a ton of FAAD finders.

Though the idea of being able to chat in PS2 and see stats is very cool, I probably wouldn't buy it, and even if I did, it would have to be $0.99.

Duckforceone
2012-07-15, 04:56 AM
btw, one thing to remember is that us fans are willing to pay, but the majority of the players are not going to be fans. So they would probably be unwilling to pay.
Especially when the game is free to play, and they already have stated that this app will be free to all.

So how about making a free version, with ad's in it, and a pay version without. Perhaps even a pay version with extra stuff.

Considering that IIRC during E3 the devs said it will be free, they should stick to their promise. It wouldn't work very well with allowing fans to create similiar apps anyway.

I'd want to see it finished first to be able to see everything its able to do but from what we've been shown of it so far it does look like it would be a cool app to have.
As for cost it can't be free, we are lucky enough that PS2 is going to be free and they have to make money to pay for game, optional extra things like camo, this app and other things must have a cost to fund the game, so if it was in the area of say $5 I'd be happy to pay for it.

Voice chat. Hell, text chat. The rumored guided drone/missile/artillery/orbital strikes.

I'm working on the assumption that Sony realizes that allowing 3rd party developers to facilitate connecting to your own game account as part of their external APIs is just begging for account theft and such. Therefore, anything that requires you to be you rather than just an observer of the game state from the internet will have to be exclusive to their app in order to protect the player from malicious apps.

For the features we've heard about/seen and the rumored drone thing, anything less than $5 would be a no-brainer. If there are more awesome features (particularly if they're game-interactive, rather than simply data viewing), that could easily be pushed up to ~$10.

What does it even do?

People are getting me scarred with hints that it does things you can't do without it which sounds ridiculous. I will NEVER get an Ipad, or any of those things, so I couldn't even get it if I wanted to. The concept of an advantage through an ipad application is completely ridiculous.

So tell me it isn't so?

^^^ It doesn't prevent you from playing the game. Just gives you extra features, outside of the game, to interact with the game... It's an add-on.... I don't see why they shouldn't charge a small fee for it...

I agree with this.

I think it should have a basic free version and a paid version with extra features. What those extra features would be i'm not sure, as i don't know all the things the app does.

To me, charging for interesting but not vital things (VoIP) is a good move, but charging for very basic (outfit info) or very useful (drone strike) stuff is not. Selling the most simple info is just cheap and selling power is just wrong.

Once I heard you can chat with people in-game through the app, I was already sold. $10 for it? $15? $20? Yeah, okay, take my money. If I can't get on and I absolutely need to coordinate something with my outfit, that's going to be a major boon.

Considering game is F2P, and the app is non-essential, and having it won't make a player have any significant advantage, then I think the app should be paid for content, SOE have got get there money from somewhere to continue supporting and developing PS2.

If someone or a set of people put in time and expertise to craft a well-made app that I will use for hours and hours, the least I can do is buy 'em a beer. So yeah $5, isn't all that much to ask. Though it's probably more likely in the $2 range, which you could easily lose in the laundry.

Don't see why people have such aversions to trivial amounts of money for products that take many hours of time and hard work. The entitlement culture that has developed is beyond pathetic.

If it does some of the things they have said like updates current state of maps then you have an advantage over other players who might not have access to it during game. Then by paying for the app you are infact subscribing to the pay to win methods

Without money they won't be able to maintain there servers or improve the game

What's trivial to some might not be trivial to others. I don't think it's right to label that "entitlement"; on the surface you might look at it like, "You can't spend $5 for an app? That's less than a movie, or a cheeseburger in most places!" but, y'know, $5 adds up. Some people might not have money to devote to something like an app for a video game.

Really starting to hate seeing people use that word, "entitlement," to deride others, especially in the gaming community...

Malorn
2012-07-16, 04:27 AM
You're talking to a group of PC gamers who are running rigs that are at least $1000, some double or triple that.

There's really no other word to describe it other than people feeling entitled to enjoy other people's hard work for free. If you don't like it - dont' buy it. If you feel it isn't priced well enough, don't buy it. Everyone has choice. Of course people like free stuff, but free stuff is a bonus, not an expectation.
